View Full Version : has anybody ever had this recall?
88vert 06-13-2002, 11:27 AM I have a recall on my 92 sport it says on Ford website for recalls that it is Recall #95S21 Liftgate Gas Assist Cylinder Brackets.Does anybody have any idea what this consists of to have replaced,do I get a whole new outside liftgate? Thanks for any replys:)
EliteConcept 06-13-2002, 11:29 AM now i get to help you!
my buddy actually got this...but never had it fixed
i believe its referring to the brackets that hold the *hatch shocks* if you will in place.
i maybe wrong cuz i never got the recall but thats what he told me
JDraper 06-13-2002, 11:30 AM Nah, they just reinforce the support rod brackets. They were having a problem with the welds breaking and the liftgate falling.
EliteConcept 06-13-2002, 11:34 AM ah thats nice,
lift the gate to grab something then the welds brake and i get crushed by the lift gate
sounds like fun times!
88vert 06-13-2002, 11:34 AM They still have to replace right? That should mean whole new liftgate:D I called my local dealer and they are going to call me back on it:)
88vert 06-13-2002, 11:36 AM I wonder how they reinforce?
JDraper 06-13-2002, 12:29 PM No new lift gate for you!!!:p If I remember correctly, they just reinforce the attachments by adding a weld to it. Check out Cars.com recall notices (http://www.cars.com/advice/caradviser/recalls.jhtml?aff=national)
88vert 06-13-2002, 12:30 PM That sucks well I will get some new paint in that area even if you cannot see it:)
mgv366 06-13-2002, 12:30 PM Don't get all excited and think your getting a whole new liftgate!! Remember this is Ford we're talking about here!! I brought mine in for the recall and they simply added addtional welds to the existing brackets.
88vert 06-13-2002, 12:32 PM What did they do to cover up the welds? Thanks for bringing me back to reality:D
mgv366 06-13-2002, 12:35 PM This is FORD!!! Cover up the welds??? Are you kidding me???
88vert 06-13-2002, 12:37 PM I bought 4 vehicles from my local Ford dealership they better cover up those welds:frustrate
Diff Whack Daddy 06-13-2002, 01:11 PM There is no weldiong involved. I actually had this done and all they do is take some thin steel strap about 5 inches long, covering the bracket on the lift gate itself. Then they drill 4 holes and pop rivet it in place to reinforce the exhhisting bracket.
LStoudenmire 06-13-2002, 01:18 PM I had the same recall done about 2 months ago, and the dealer only replaced the gas cylinders.
Later in the week......
I took another look at it today, and they did add the riveted reinforcement as well.
88vert 06-13-2002, 01:26 PM Thanks for all the input:D :D :D
Positive Vibes 06-13-2002, 01:31 PM I had mine done a couple of years ago and I thought they only replaced the gas cyclinders.
schock1 06-13-2002, 02:27 PM You should get it replaced bro. I ignored mine because I didn't have the time & one of mine broke off & messed my hatch up. It still doesn't sit right when it's closed. Somehow the lift cylinder jammed up in the area where it closes when it broke. I welded mine back on then they did just as stated above, pop riveted a bracket on each side.
Bashman 06-13-2002, 03:20 PM Mine was done last year, and it was done exactly the same as Diff Whack Daddy's.
bigbadfred 06-13-2002, 04:36 PM Ihad this same recall and all they did replace was the gas cylinders and the mounting brackets that was all. No new hatch or anything like that. When it comes to ford they get buy doing things the cheap way. They have so many fords on the road today that they have to service everyone that comes in for a recall and I know they wouldnt replace everyones hatch. That would cost them so much money and they wouldnt go thru that. That would mean replace hatch and paint new hatch and they aren't going to do that. Since the new parts were put on I havn't had any problems with it. :D
mattadams 06-13-2002, 04:46 PM you guys are asking for a new tailgate when allt hats bad is the struts, and you say ford is out of line? You guys are crazy... can you imagine how much it would cost them to replace and repaint new tailgates for all the explorers on the road? They'd go bankrupt!
Crankcase 06-14-2002, 04:47 AM They did the bracket/pop rivet thing to my Dads 94. The way to test if it is bad is to lift it all the way up, and then lift it a bit more by hand. If the brackets flex too much, get down to a dealer pronto.
94Murph 06-14-2002, 04:59 PM Mine broke last summer on a 94 EB. Took it to the dealer said nothing could be done unless I wanted a new tailgate for $1400. Got the recall in the mail one week later and the dealer replaced the whole tailgate. I know they did because I had a big dent in the old one and some chrome pinstripe on it. They told me because the chrome wasnt factory they would not replace the pinstripe. That was fine by me.

Rscotts1 06-14-2002, 10:41 PM Hmmm...thats funny! I thought my 2002 XLS was the only year to have this recall on the gas lift strut brackets. About a month after getting my X, went to load groceries....opened the rear glass lift gate and a gas trut came flying out at me, wacked the hell out of the glass!!! Turns out that the mounting bracket that the upper strut attaches to is loose (worked it's way loose) and allows the top of the strut to uncompress (very quickly and with alot of force) when you open liftgate. Read up on TSB's and found out about the recall. I was never notified by Ford. It became a recall, because the rear glass was exploding on other 2002's as the strut flew out and hit the glass!! Fixed now......but boy.......!!!!!!!!!!!
jimEMT 07-19-2002, 03:15 PM I had the recall work done, so I thought, in March of 2000. There were supports added to the lower supports (lower struts to the car), but not to the uppewr struts (Strut to the liftgate). Lo and behold, the weld snapped on my liftgate a month ago, and I am fighting with the dealer to do the repair. Just to confirm, the recall is also for the upper (liftgate) welds, not just the lower ones? I am getting a runaround from the dealer and it is annoying the heck out of me.
