View Full Version : Need advice - Front Drive Shaft For Lifted X
If your X is lifted (axle moved, not a TT) are you running the stock drive shaft? Have you had any problems? I am trying to decide on buying a new one or running the stock for my 4" superlift.
I need all the info you can provide, pros and cons.

come on you second gernerationers! I know there are a few of you out there!
2001ExpSport 06-18-2002, 05:31 PM You need a new shaft, the stock shaft won't be long enough. Even if you can bolt it on, it's too short. Your best bet is to goto a drive shaft shop and show them what you need, should be able to get one for $250-400.
Ya, a lot of guys are gunna say if your stock shaft bolts on it will be ok. When they tell you that, just let me know and I'll show you pictures of a friends 2001 Sport with a grenaded front end.
Did your friend grenade it at Attica? If so I was there. I just didn't know if anyone decided that is what did it. That is what I am skeered of.
2001ExpSport 06-18-2002, 05:50 PM Ya, we took it on a test run a month before that trip and it was popping then. We were kinda sketchy on the shaft holding up. I personally think the fornt grenaded because of the shaft angle. The main problem here is the angle. At this angle under stress puts uneven loads on the diffy which is bad.
I agree. But you would think the U-Joint would give out first?
2001ExpSport 06-19-2002, 04:55 PM You think it would...
oh well not woth the risk of blowing the diff!:D
krisp12yukon 06-21-2002, 08:23 PM Careful, When I blew the diff, I was running a longer shaft. I know the length was good. I believe that it is the angle. That is the only thing that I can think of. Or I hit it on a rock, but it didn't look like that happened.
If you haven't guessed, I'm the 2001 with the grenaded diff.
2001ExpSport 06-21-2002, 08:56 PM Couldn't hit a rock, the diff is too far up between the crossmembers to hit anything.
krisp12yukon 06-21-2002, 09:48 PM What about hitting the shaft?
2001ExpSport 06-21-2002, 09:51 PM Nope
krisp12yukon 06-21-2002, 10:01 PM Well, I'm just out of luck and can not off road anymore.
2001ExpSport 06-21-2002, 10:03 PM did you fix the diff?
krisp12yukon 06-21-2002, 10:06 PM Yep, 1600 later. That is alright I guess because that is total after Labor. Could have been worse.
2001ExpSport 06-21-2002, 10:08 PM hmm...not too bad. Maybe you should get Superlifts shaft. It's like Trailmasters, but $200 less.
krisp12yukon 06-21-2002, 10:09 PM Probably. I PM you. Cool.
You sure it was the shaft and not some ford defect?
krisp12yukon 06-22-2002, 08:05 PM That is the only thing that I can think of. The whole housing just split. I know the D35 isn't very strong, but I wasn't hitting it hard.
DocVijay 05-13-2003, 06:04 PM I did an SOA and still use the stock driveshaft. It's a bit too short, but unless I get completely airborne, I think it'll be long enough.
410Fortune 05-13-2003, 06:13 PM I chose first gen with aftermarket shaft because my truck is a BII, however I have swapped in a BW1354 T case from a 94 and a Dana 35 TTB from a 93, the front driveshaft comes from a 93 Explorer, but it was customized by a local driveline shop to fit my truck, I do NOT believe they changed the length. I run a 6" long travel suspension lift and I have plenty left in the slip yoke.
The rear shaft, well thats another story totally custom there, I had a longer Ford shaft shortened to fit......
