As i was prying out my speedo sensor, this came out with it. I'm assuming that this is the gear for my speedometer? I might as well get the correct teeth while this thing is out what do you think? Does anyone know the part number off the top of there head?

Happy trails!!

Dude! I figured you were pulling the speed sensor to change that gear! There are a few things you need to know in order to get the correct gear.

You need to know your tire size
You need to know your gear ratio

Go read about this here:

www.therangerstation.com

Look under transmissions, then speedometer correction....

I am on my 4th gear, I have a collection!

What color is your gear? that will tell you the # of teeth.

Why do you want to change it?

The only reason to change out your speedo gear is if you install larger/smaller diameter tires or if you change the gear ratio in your axles..........

Well, i wasn't planning on changing the gear, just the sensor because i cracked it open!! haha

Anyways, it is blue. I called Ford and talked to an idoit that had no idea what he was doing. I want to change the gear so my speedo will be right, might as well while i'm in there. I went from P235's to 31's a couple of years ago. So i'll read up on that site and see what it tells me. Would this thing be okay to drive just on the road for a day or so? I'm thinking not because of the big hole in my tcase! I figure it will just pump the fluid out.

Happy trails!!

I forgot to post the picture the first time so here it is. Also, i looked at that site (very awesome, first time i've been there) but it wasn't the same as mine. Mine is blue (as you can see) with 20 teeth, that site wasn't the same as mine??

no no no silly! The speedo sensor body is blue, the gear is black = 20 teeth. The gear itself is what changes color. You can see it is held on with a little c clip....

Okay, that's good. I was just assuming that was color of the gear since most metal is that color after that kind of use. So now, i can use those formulas to get the correct gear that i need?

Alright, i swear i'm not stupid, i can't figure this out. This thread is making me look like an moron, and i swear i'm not.

Why doesn't the formula turn out right for me? If i went from 29.4" tires, or what ever P235 75 r15's come out to, to 31" then what does that tell me?

Happy trails!!

How in the world did you break that like that?

A little ATF will come out if you drive without it, thats all, not much...it is used to lube the speedo cable....

well the change in tire diameter is small, from 29.5 to 31 is not much. I would say you need the 21 tooth.

Jot017 - You want a 19 tooth pink gear. Be sure and get the pink one, not the 19 tooth tan one. The tan one was the first one my service department brought out and it was the wrong length. The pink one fit right in place of my black one.

The part # I show for the pink one is C0DZ-B. The part number may not be what Ford shows, but give it a try unless your service department person is willing to go back and look at the gears until he finds a pink one.

thats right 19 tooth, down 1 tooth = gear spins faster = more speed on the speedo. I always get this backwards! I have a collection of these baby's I thinnk I have 17, 19 , 20, and 21 tooth. I have the 20 tooth in my t case with 3.73's and 31" tires. The speed limit thingy says I'm doing 44, when my speedo rears 45 so it's close enough for me!!!

410Fortune: I did a search but couldn't find much info for the older X's. I have a '94 with 4.10 and 33's. Do you know which sensor I should purchase and where. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Dude I have one of those in my tools...actually I have tow spares.

Any pre 95 4x4 Explorer/Ranger will have the sensor you need. Junk yard is your best bet.

Any truck that has the Borg Warner 1350 or 1354 T case will have your part, if you are desperate I'll send you one of my spare's, it came out of my 88 BII t case when I ditched it at 200K miles. I installed a BW 1354n from a 94 Explorer and used its speed sensor...

Ford will charge you an arm and a leg for this unit. I wouldnt pay more then $5 for a used one......

410Fortune: If your willing to part with one I will buy it. Right now it's 103 degrees and going thru a pick and pull doesn't sound like fun, too dam hot. Let me know. Thanks!

410--i have the same set up you have, 31's with 3.73 and my speedo is way off. I also remembered that i had 225's not 235's, but i still have the same speedo gear that you have. I know i'm off because of our GPS units and those radars they set on the side of the road at construction. I mean i set my cruise at 69 on the interstate and i'm doing 77. So, i'd like to get that a little bit closer!

Thanks Robert, i appriciate it. I'll ask them tomorrow. Hopefully they have that thing in stock because man, i drove about 15 miles home tonight and there is fluid everywhere under my truck, not good! I guess if it ruins my tcase that would give me a good excuse to get a manual, haha

Happy trails!!
