Okay I was thinking (bad idea). One of the guys over at the rangerstation is thinking of building a 2.9L powewred Escort to blow the doors off of Ricers. So I was gonna suggest that it would be a hell of a lot easier to start with a 2.9L Merkur drivetrain then a Ranger 2.9L drivetrain. But then I started to spin my wheels, has anybody ever done a 4.0L conversion into a 2.9L Merkur Scorpio? HAHAHAHAHA!!!!
I know what you guys are gonna say, the 4.0L is a truck engine, blah, blah, blah, but if it was done right I bet it would haul ASSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
Personally I would rather waste my time and $$ building a 2.3L T Xr4TI BUT IT;S AN INTERESTING IDEA......

The XR4TI is a 2.3L turbo, like the svo stangs, but the (rare in the US) Scorpio uses a 2.9L.
It's a funky 2.9L too, it's got a dual plane upper intake manifold that points towards the drivers side with a dual butterfly throttle body (like a early 90's 5.0L F-150 or Bronco)
The Ranger version of the 2.9L has that upper intake that sits like 6" taller to create more torque with longer plenums.
I saw one of these Scorpio's last year in a junk yard with the complete 2.9L in it and I kick myself all the time for not grabbing that upper intake and throttle body setup, it would be a sweet addition to a street style 2wd Ranger.......
But a 4.0L powered Scorpio would really kick some ass if you ask me.....

What do you mean? You mean drop the newer Mustang V6 into a Scorpio in place of the 2.9L?
I guess because the 2.9L to 4.0L conversion is so straight forward, they have so much in common it;s a given (pre 95)

Hmm.. I just would rather use a engine that came in a car then one that came in a truck. I like the 4.0 but it would seem smarter to go with an engine you can get more power out of and one that is lighter too.

see I knew it was coming.....first off this is not exactly a "smart" idea. Second this guy is putting a 2.9L in an 89 Escort for heavens sake (it's gonna break in three pieces if you ask me), thirdly if I was dumb enough to tackle a project like this shoot me....
I cant decide if I want to build a SVO 2wd 80's Ranger, or a 5.0L drop top 93 Stang, but I wanna build something to drive to work and back!
I'm thinking I can pick up a 92-93 drop top Stang with a decent body on it and a blown drivetrain for around $1000. then go to the auction and buy a late model 5.0L GT thats been t boned for another $1000 and start wrenching. In a year or two I could roll it out of the driveway and have one sweet drop top.....Any comments?
Or I couldpick up a 2wd short cab ranger that doesnt run for nothin, build up a 2.3L turbo for about 300 ponies and drop that in with a 8.8" rear and a Mustang II front suspension.....Any comments?
Not original ideas liek the 4.0L powered Scorpio but sweet projects none the less....

Oh and not to mention what I want to do with a Vr6 powered 93 VW Corraddo,
or how about a 88 Mazda Rx7 twin turbo drop top? they never made it to the states for some reason..................bascially it has all been done before.
I hated the looks of the 90's Mustangs when I was younger but over the years the 93-94 body (without the slotted brake light, CA look) has really grown on me, especially with the Saleen body kit.....
Now to hit the lotto.......

the ideal stang for me would be a 93-94 drop top 4 banger thats got a blown engine or tranny with a good body, decent top, and decent interior, I figure if I can ever find one I couldpick it up for $500-$1000 depending on the condition..........great starting platform for a full rebuild/custom job.....
