View Full Version : If MLB Baseball Strikes again rpenner54 08-12-2002, 01:20 PM Will it survive? Or will people just slowly avoid it more and more??? aldive 08-12-2002, 01:55 PM Baseball will survive, there is simply too much money involved. Alas, none of it has been mine in quaire a while. ChuckyD 08-12-2002, 03:06 PM It will survive, but people... including me.... cant stand it when these "players" are money hungry slobs. the average player makes 2.5 million. COME ONE.... so you can absolutly suck and still make about a million a year. Damn In my industry, if you suck, your on the unemployment line just as many other professions as well Fischer 08-12-2002, 03:11 PM I would say that Obviousely you dont need more money if you can AFFORD to strike. I think they are spoiled and greedy bastards. The only way I go to games are if the tickets are FREE. ChuckyD 08-12-2002, 03:18 PM Originally posted by Fischer The only way I go to games are if the tickets are FREE. I still dont go to games even if they are for free! :fire: rpenner54 08-12-2002, 03:49 PM I think more and more and more people are going to get fed up with this. To the point were even if the games are free they won't go. I just keep wondering how much longer people will continue to support this. After all we are the losers... We pay a huge amount to watch enjoy these games. How many people that were baseball fans worked for Enron, Worldcom, or anyone else that has laid off tons and tons of people? Do you think these people really would want to watch these games knowing how much the players makes? I donno... It should get really intresting here in the next few years... :) aldive 08-12-2002, 04:05 PM I was taught many years ago to never begrudge someoneelse's income. How many of "us" would be doing the same thing if the glove were in our hands? aldive 08-12-2002, 04:08 PM Just curious.... how many who are commenting here are (1) season ticket holders or (2) have the extra cost games on cable/satelite or (3) regularly attend MLB games? aldive 08-12-2002, 04:30 PM Originally posted by ChuckyD these "players" are money hungry slobs. the average player makes 2.5 million. COME ONE.... so you can absolutly suck and still make about a million a year. Damn If, and thats a big if, you were good enough to play in the bigs, how would you feel then about salery then? I promise you that there are no players in MLB that "suck", not even in A ball; sorry my friend, these guys, like it or not, are the best of the best. rpenner54 08-12-2002, 04:36 PM I have only been to one MLB game my whole life. I was there for 30-45 minutes before walking out. I will never go to another baseball game again. I don't watch it on TV either. Football and Basketball I used to go to all the time. Then ticket prices rose and my Grandparents and Parents decided the games were no longer worth the $$ specially for how poor the players play with that amount of money. I guess that is what frustrates me the most. Most of the players just don't get it. They give up after so long and just don't play hard anymore. Yes there are a few that do play but they are few and far between. Also what's up with rain delays in baseball? Are they that wimpy that they can't play in rain? To me that is another reason to avoid it. As far as me begrudging their income I sure as hell will. Specially if they don't give the full performance that I still somehow pay. Even though I don't go to games I still pay. How??? Umm Coors field, Invesco field are both payed for out of taxes. So I have EVERY right to complain about their performance bassed on their pay. That and the fact that even if they decide not to perform they will get paid. Unlike myself where if I decide I don't want to work one day I will and can get fired for it. Hello??? I belive I have every right to boo at them for their actions. So does everyone else. I try hard not to support Pro sports anymore. Its not as entertaining as it used to be so why should I... :) rpenner54 08-12-2002, 04:40 PM Originally posted by aldive I promise you that there are no players in MLB that "suck", not even in A ball; sorry my friend, these guys, like it or not, are the best of the best. They may be the best of the best... But when they don't want to play because they don't think 1 mill is enough then they are not playing their best. In fact read my above post... I still say College ball games are a whole lot more entertaining to watch then pro. Has anyone ever compared the two? If you do you will see that college kids are out for blood.... A person batting a .100 and is warming the bench, in my book... sucks of couse im comparing them to many of the other players in the league aldive 08-12-2002, 05:03 PM Originally posted by ChuckyD A person batting a .100 and is warming the bench, in my book... sucks of couse im comparing them to many of the other players in the league And remember my friend, that b ball players alsp play DEFENCE. Trust me, if he "sucked" he would be looking for a job..... aldive 08-12-2002, 05:14 PM Originally posted by rpenner54 Also what's up with rain delays in baseball? Are they that wimpy that they can't play in rain? To me that is another reason to avoid it. Gee, they have rain delays and even cancellations of NASCAR races too.... Would YOU like to stand in the batters box with a pitcher throwing a wet ( no control ) ball at up to 100 MPH? I seriously doubt it. Rain delays are there foir a reason. Guy Groves 08-12-2002, 05:16 PM All pro sports are simply too expensive for what you get. First there is the ticket cost, then parking and $3.50 hot dogs that suck! It cost a lot of money for a family of 4 to go to a game, it simply isn't worth it. I take the money I don't spend at sports games and put it into my vehicle, or take the family on a short in state trip and get much better value for my dollar. Let'em strike ... let'em starve for all I care, although I doubt they will. rpenner54 08-12-2002, 05:19 PM Never been to a Nascar race sorry to say. They don't have em here. :) If the rain really affects the ball like that, they need to learn how to throw the ball better. :) Out here all the pitchers all blame the alltitude for not being able to throw the ball. Yes they blame it they don't learn how to work around it. I guess I don't belive in excusses for these guys. Most of us regular guys still have to work in the rain. espnfreak 08-12-2002, 05:27 PM Only way i support baseball is with various appareil (hats shirts etc). otherwise i rarely go to games and i dont pay for anything else baseball related. baseball is a cool sport, but the way it is today with the salaries ruins it. aldive 08-12-2002, 05:31 PM Originally posted by rpenner54 If the rain really affects the ball like that, they need to learn how to throw the ball better. :) Out here all the pitchers all blame the alltitude for not being able to throw the ball. Gee, if YOU could throw a wet ball with exacting control, or even instruct the pro players how to do it, maybe YOU wouldn't have to work in the rain.... rpenner54 08-12-2002, 05:37 PM LOL.... Um That is why they get paid the big bucks. Cause THEY are the experts. aldive 08-12-2002, 05:44 PM I don't know how much money YOU make, nor do I care or is it any of my business, but the people of Honduras, I bet, think YOU make too much. Their average income for a YEAR is less than many make here per DAY. rpenner54 08-12-2002, 05:48 PM I am sure that is true. I betcha if they knew how much pro players made they would probably have a heart attack. Specially considering that most of them make the stuff that is needed for our everyday lives to function. You could also say that a number of these people stole american's jobs. After all they work for way less then any american would! Therefore stealing jobs from them. It's all a vicious circle I know. aldive 08-12-2002, 05:50 PM Originally posted by rpenner54 After all they work for way less then any american would! . Are you saying an American wants more money for his work? Doesn't thast apply at all jobs; and, pro sports is a job. rpenner54 08-12-2002, 06:02 PM Pro sports is NOT a job its a game. How many of your friends do you have that play sports? Do they get paid? No... Sports are Sports... They are NOT needed to keep this country going. I guess I will never ever be convinced that sports are needed. They don't provide that many jobs... In fact if you go back and do a search on here Rick posted a link that proves that newer ball parks take jobs away from working class people. aldive 08-12-2002, 06:28 PM I thinkdetect major jealousy of these pro players here..... rpenner54 08-12-2002, 06:36 PM Ah... Maybe. I wish I could get a few mill a year to rock crawl. You may be partially right. I am jealous that they don't have to do much for the money they get. Here is another question for ya. The CEO's of Enron, and WorldCom and all the other UGH companies out there have all walked away with millions or billions. Is that right? Do you feel that it's fair? Did they work for it? Same reasoning. Of course the guys on the bottom are always going to be jealous. If I got paid what they get paid for a year I would NEVER have to work again my whole life if I didn't want to. I have always felt that since the NBA striked they have been BAD players. They lost the drive they used to have. Same with the NFL. They have not driven like they used to since the 80's. Now MLB is the same way. Hockey I can't argue with to much they still seem to play pretty dang hard for the money compared to how other pro sports play. It's simple all pro sports minus hockey have all gone down hill since money has gotten involved. aldive 08-12-2002, 06:41 PM Originally posted by rpenner54 It's simple all pro sports minus hockey have all gone down hill since money has gotten involved. Why do you like to agrue and complain about sports when you are not even a fan and appear not to even like them? rpenner54 08-12-2002, 06:43 PM I WAS a fan. That's my problem. I really really enjoyed all major sports. Then things went to crap... LOL My Grandparents were season ticket holders for the Bronc's and the Nuggs since the 60's all the way up till the early 90's. I went to as many as I could. I watched the game's go down hill as the dollars went up hill. Which is the major bummer. :) aldive 08-12-2002, 06:47 PM Not being a big fan of hockey, I knew little of the money these guys make, therefore, I looked it up... I chose one team at random: BOSTON BRUINS PLAYER POSITION SALARY Martin Lapointe RW 5,250,000 Bill Guerin RW 5,100,000 Byron Dafoe G 3,400,000 Jozef Stumpel C 2,650,000 Sean O'Donnell D 2,500,000 Robert Zamuner LW 2,000,000 Brian Rolston LW 2,000,000 Glen Murray LW 1,975,000 Joe Thornton C 1,825,000 Sergei Samsonov LW 1,800,000 Don Sweeney D 1,800,000 Kyle McLaren D 1,755,000 Hal Gill D 1,100,000 Scott Pellerin LW 1,000,000 Andrei Nazarov RW 1,000,000 rpenner54 08-12-2002, 06:53 PM Ah... :) I can respect Hockey players. See they will go out on the Ice and not wear a face mask get into fights just to keep the rivarly(sp) going. See that's what's gone in most other sports. The Hockey players at least have a TEAM mentality. Their team will win and they will get all bloody trying to proove it. Ah well I don't think it will ever change but it might.... :D aldive 08-12-2002, 06:56 PM You must not have played any team sports in high school and college. rpenner54 08-12-2002, 07:34 PM Nope... My brother does though. I was a working man in High School. Have not made it to college yet. mattadams 08-13-2002, 10:39 AM I hope it won't... damn baseball players... wish I could get paid millions of dollars to chew tobacco, let myself get fat and play a game for a living... aldive 08-13-2002, 10:50 AM Originally posted by mattadams I hope it won't... damn baseball players... wish I could get paid millions of dollars to chew tobacco, let myself get fat and play a game for a living... Maybe if you had played the game as a kid in high school and in college, and most important, were good enough then you could be one of them..... mattadams 08-13-2002, 11:18 AM yeah I sure could be aldive! And why the hell arent YOU out there making your millions playing baseball? Oh thats right because you didn't either. aldive 08-13-2002, 11:27 AM I DID play the gam, and YES its very true that I wasn't dood enough to even make the U of GA team, but I tried, I loved to play ball . mattadams 08-14-2002, 09:32 AM aldive, then you should be upset because there are people that were better then you (most of them got that way by taking illegal performance enhancers) and now there making the money while your in the scuba business with Julie! aldive 08-14-2002, 09:34 AM I do not brgrudge others good fortune, I am happy for them. mikem74 08-14-2002, 10:11 AM I would like to say a few things about this...and I have said before in a post. THE PROPOSED MAJOR LEAGUE STRIKE IS NOT AT ALL ABOUT THE PLAYERS WANTING MORE MONEY!! It is about revenue sharing for all teams. Modeled after the current NFL system. This would help the smaller markets compete. Another comment is that aldive has some very true points. These guys are amazing talents. As a former athlete and college football player professional athletes are extremely unique individuals. The are in many ways freaks of nature for what they can do athletically. Performance enhancers or not. I know that if I was the very best at what I did I would demand as much $$$ as possible. Everyone's goal when negotiating is demonstrate how much they are worth. I love money and people who say money doesn't matter probably dont have any. Sorry about the rant. mikem74 08-17-2002, 02:52 AM Well...I would like to hear any educated arguments! Alto 08-21-2002, 05:10 PM I used to love watching all sports. Now it makes me sick to see Professional Athletes complaining that they aren't getting paid enough. Aren't getting treated like the Kings they feel they are. As fans young and old we all look up to these guys because they get to play a sport that as little kids we used to love playing and would always dream of following. Now as we are older we know that our kids are doing the same. I ate Wheatees because they did. They were my hero's. Now look what has happened. All the Illegal Drugs, Performance Enhancing Drugs, the days of Natural Athletes are going fast. Now its Athlete in a Bottle! Athletes should be more like Fans. Loyal to the TEAM not the Mighty Buck! Take a look at all the player that are always though of as the Greatest to ever play the Game. They got there as Natural Atheletes, as Role Models for the Younger Generation. I'm not saying they where saints. But they were the best because they played for the Love Of the Game. They were not changing teams because they were following the Money. Most of the greatest stayed with the original teams or at least were not changing teams every 2-3 years. Walter Payton, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretszy, Larry Bird, Micheal Jordan, Nolan Ryan ect... This may be just my opinion but Professional Sports need to Enforce and Tighten fines for Drug use. Need to use some of the guide lines that are used in the Olympics. Why should the Athletes get paid so much. Just because I think I'm better than him and he got $11 million so I want $12 million. The owners bought the team its a business. Make the Professional Athelete someone to look up to again. Not someone who takes abuses their talent because they feel they are above the rest. DocVijay 08-21-2002, 05:36 PM AS far as I can tell, no other sport's atheletes get paid as much as in baseball, yet they have the nerve to whine and go on strike. You don't see any other sport doing this like they do in baseball. It's really, really sad. DocVijay 08-21-2002, 05:47 PM And another thing. Best of te best or not, it's just a game. There's no way to get around that. Getting paid that much for what is a recreationis just plain silly. I dont sit around and do taxes for fun. I don't stock my grocery stores aisles for fun. I don't drive a taxi for fun. I don't go aorund checking electric meters for fun. I do, however play baseball for fun. I play football for fun. I play soccer for fun. If you look at the verb used in that sentence, you will see what I mean. "PLAY" These guys play baseball. "PLAY" It's not, "these guys work baseball." Nope. It's a game. That's all. Getting paid to play a game is a privilege. Getting paid that much to play a game is an honor, regardles of how "good" they may be. TwoToneX 08-21-2002, 07:22 PM Nope. Probably won't. I think it'll still go on, but really...baseball is still feeling the effects of the last strike, they don't need another tearing fans away. I'll still watch though. For every guy you guys hate for wanting more money, there's guys like Brent Mayne (kansas city royals catcher) and Walter McKeel (minor leaguer for the rockies), etc. Brent Mayne never made much money, never asked for much, isn't the best catcher in the world...but he tried his arse off. He played his hardest when he was there because he loved the game. Every interview you could tell this guy was right where he wanted to be...and he'd be there for much less money. Walt McKeel was in the minors for 13 YEARS before he got a chance in the bigs, then was just demoted again because the Rockies got Sandy Alomar. This guy didn't stick around for money, he just wanted the chance to perform in the bigs and he loved the game. Sure....for every one of these guys there's probably 3 or 4 jerks that want more money...but that's not everything it's about. Besides, baseball is still a great game in my mind... |
