I need a new credit card, one of those reward cards.
i've poking around and i found one that looks good. Its the MBNA World MasterCard
Only problem i have is that I have only used Visa and every other person i know uses Visa... so im alittle confused at what i should do... should i get the Mastercard or try to dig for a Visa with the same point rewards....

What would you do???

i just want to make sure no one has had any bad expierences with MasterCard cards

I travel internationally quite a bit and have never had a problem using my Visa, that is at places that even accept credit cards ( I am in the 3rd world a bunch ).

I've never even heard of a place that accepts one, but not the other.

Just get the MasterCard you like, but keep the Visa in case some freak place doesn't accept MasterCard.

Here in Canada, Visa outnumbers Mastercard in locations used. Any place that takes credit cards always takes Visa, but alot that do don't take Mastercard.
I only know of ONE place that takes Mastercard, but not Visa.

My advice- get both. Get the Visa for main purchases, due to its availability, and get the Mastercard for places that don't take Visa...simple:)

I have always had Mastercard in Canada and have yet to see a place that will take a different over mine.
(how dare they ;) )

I picked it because it has "Master" in the name, and therefore conveys a certain superiority when wielding it. "Visa" sounds too foreign and high brow for me.

What about American Express? I thought that was a big one south of the border, and has a rock steady name too.

Oh I`ve never been in a third world country with my card, but If not, then does that make Canada a first world country? Or is USA a first world country and Canada a second world country? Are we both first? Wait a minute, I`ve never heard the term second world country. Did someone bomb that country without telling me, and cover it up? Wouldn`t have been us! C`mon fess up now!
Does.... not..... compute.......too late..must log off.....

Get a bunch of different credit cards, all in your name of course. Mail them all to me. I'll go around to all kinds of places and buy a bunch of stuff. I'll go to a bunch of different countries too, just charge the plane tickets to a credit card.

Each time I have trouble using a card, I'll write down where I was and what card I tried to use. Then you'll know for sure what cards work where.

As payment for all that hard work I'd have to do, I'd keep all the junk I bought and we'd call it even. You pay the bills. Sound like a deal? I know, I know, sounds like too good of a deal to pass up. What can I say? I'm just a nice guy. :)

Discover is not as accepted in the States as V/M and is hardly heard of internationally.

aldive, its taken everywhere I need it to be taken! I've never tried to use it somewhere where they don't take it. And who cares about international, I've never been international and probably never will be.

aldive, the way the poll was worded made it sound like what kind of card do "YOU" prefer. To me, international makes no difference. yes there is a world to explorer but thats also lots of great stuff to see in the states. Hell I've travelled all over the states and I've still only seen a small percentage of what there is to see. plus I'm not independantly wealthy like you appareenlty appear to be, so I can't afford some of these extravagent international vacations.

Back on topic, if you're interested incentives in you might also consider American Express. I've racked up a bazillion Membership Rewards points. I also haven't had a problem with them overseas, either.

IMHO, use the MC as your primary card to get all of the incentives and then the Visa as a sort of backup card JIC.

I'd say go with Visa. I lived in Russia for a year and Mastercard was unheard of. Although the only place you could use a credit card was at the bank, LOL.

Good luck.

That isn't always true. My parents always paid off their bills every month, leaving nothing in debt. They even bought the Explorers they own on the cards, knowing they had the money in the bank at the time to pay it off at the end of the month. Why would they do that? To get the bonus points offered. Think about it...$14,000 on one months bill is a lot of bonus points.

The people at the card company must have thought they were going to make a lot of money off of it, as the interest on that would be crazy. But, they still gave good service after the bill was paid up, and still do.

It was funny, because they phoned and double checked if my dad did indeed make that purchase on his card, due to the large amount spent in one day...

I'm going to second the advice on the American Express. You can get a normal American Express card in green/gold/platinum/or centurion. I have a platinum one and I've never even seen a centurion card, its black with silver lettering. I also have a green card that my wife uses, and a gold corporate card for gas/car repairs/expenses through my office. If you want the flexibility of paying month to month you can finance a specific month's payment for up to 12 months if its too high to pay every 30 days, otherwise the balance is due in full every month. Plus there's no pre-set spending limit so its good in a pinch. If you want you can get a Blue card which works much like a Master Card or Visa, and they're taken many places overseas. Plus American Express has terrific travel and credit programs just for its cardholders. The only downside is that you have to pay an annual fee. I know its $75 for the normal green card and upwards of $300 for the Platinum. You can also enroll in the membership rewards program that gives you one point, or two points for every dollar you spend depending on the card. I have most of my monthly bills set to auto pay off my card and then I pay them all in one big monthly payment, and I get the points. I checked it a while back, and since 1989 I've racked up enough to take some fantastic vacations, buy almost anything in the catalog, and I almost have enough for a three year lease on a Mustang! Of course, points arent equal to dollar value, unfortunately ;)
