Ive got a bunk alternator that needs replacing. Ive called around and gotten quotes everywhere from $150 to $350.... I know I can get a refurbished alternator at Autozone for $57.99, but even then the install cost would run almost $75. So Im asking... How hard is it to change out? How long would it take me to do this? Any advice/help would be very much appreciated. (Today the thing crapped out and its definately time to replace it...)

Very easy. First you need to remove the serpentine belt by removing tenison at the tensioner pulley. The tensioner pulley is aluminum and has an arrow on it pointing in the direction to loosen. You will need a long wrench or a breaker bar to loosen it. Three bolts hold the alternator in. One nut holds the main power wire and then there are two plug in connectors.
Be careful with the locking tabs on the connectors. They get brittle in time and can break easily. I broke one of mine and I just slipped the connector back on without it. It has never caused a problem. It should take about 20-30 minutes if you have never done it before. Much less if you have.

Before you buy, maysure its 130 AMp. And not the 95 Amp. You'll find it must better.

95 amp? i was planning on getting a 200 amp alternator...

Ok Its in! It only took about an hour... nothin too hard. Thanks for the instructions Rick and Robb... I pulled out my Haynes manual just to double check, but you had it right on. (Why did I ever doubt you oh fearless leader?)
Chris, Im just running a plain stock explorer... no fancy stereo stuff or any extra lights. Well, I have a radio hack cb, but thats bout it... If I ever decide I need a bigger alternator, I now know I can change it fairly simply. Lol...

PS - never ever keep driving your car when the alternator isnt charging properly... your car may just die IN THE FREAKING PARKING LOT and have to be pushed into a spot at Autozone... Whoops... my bad... I had to wait an hour to charge the battery back up, then get it home! oh well...
