I have a '92 4x4. I recently had the thermostat replace with a Ford 195 degree thermostat. However, the temp guage runs about midway now where as before it would never go past the "N" in normal on the guage. Also, since the thermostat replacement, the engine has developed a pinging when going uphill. Running a higher octane gas helps, but why should I have to except this change. Is it oxygen sensor, timing, plugs or what? Thanks for any help

Was the coolant replaced? It's possible the cooling system was not "burped" properly and you have air trapped in system.

yup, it definately has something to do with the tstat install if that's all that was done recently. and IMO it's good to go with a stock replacement unit (195). So, I'm guessing it's something in the coolant system, or a bad replacement. hmmm, maybe a bad gasket?

let's see if some early model owners chime in as to what's normal on their temp gauges. About halfway is normal on my 96, but mine runs hotter due to the supercharger :D

Mine runs somewhere between O & R. I think it gets close to R & then drops down to O. I guess thats about right. It seems to run both sides of the O. Thats about normal for mine. I hope this helps. Welcome to the site!
