I have a 93 Explorer that I just bought a few months ago. Today I thought I would check out the hubs to see how they look. They were full of bearing grease. From what I have been reading there should only be a thin coating of ATF in them. So i spent hours cleaning them only to realize that there is nothing to keep the wheel bearing grease from going into the hub. Is this right?

I have a 93 as well. My hubs are full of grease and I think they are supposed to be, as you stated, nothing keeps the grease out. But then again, my handy friggen push button 4WD hasn't worked in two years! I may not be the one to listen to...

Mine were full of grease and they work fine.

atf in the presence of grease will eat up the grease and braek it down much like a solvent...... switch to manual hubs and have 4wd that actually has 4 wheels turning

They are not supposed to be full of grease. Only a little bit. Pretty much whatever is left after you clean them out is enough. Mechanics think that they are supposed to have grease on them so when they do brakes or something they load them up. Grease is actually what contributes to them going bad. Another thing that makes them go bad is that they are made of nylon and the heat from your brakes can actually melt them. Nice going Ford. :rolleyes:

I had heard that 4WD works much better with four wheels. My wife had asked me why when she hits the button, nothing happens. I just told her that those dash board buttons are just for looks. I might hook a buzzer up to them.

I'm seriously thinking about going manual. I have a near level paved driveway, but when there is more than 3 inches of snow out there, that truck does not want to move in 2WD. Good thing I have an '85 Jag to tow it out with! The neighbors get a big kick out of it.:bounce:
