Ok, for the past two weeks Retard and I have been working on his SAS 1998 Ranger, we are sooo close to being done!
Here's the problem were having...
*Stock 98 RANGER PS PUMP (had IFS RACK AND PINION)
*1978 Scout Steering box
We keep blowing out the aluminum caps at the end of the box, Our BUMP stops ARE SET! And yet still keep blowing caps...
what gives?
Anyone else had these problems?
Any sugestions?
Im thinking the next resourt is to swap in a scout ps pump, maybe the ford pump has too much pressure, causing the caps to crack???
Or maybe we should go to FULL HYDRO RAM setup, except, my only wories is about freeway "HIGH SPEED" STEERING, will it work?
How much does a hydro ram setup cost?
THANX YALL! HAVE A GREAT LABOR DAY!!!

I would go with the full hydro steering as a last resort, it is serious $$$ and fab work.
I'm sorry I can't help out with your pump problem.
Do you guys have a write-up on a message board somewhere?

switching to the 'ole scout pump could solve the problem. the new ranger pump (like you said) does work at a lot higher line pressure... as far as hydralic ram setup goes... go with a hydro-assist, and not full hydro if its gonna ever see the street. we put full hydro steer on a buddy's wrangler, and quickly converted it back and just went with hydralic assist. you absolutely could not drive it over 50mph on the street...

My question is this:
Is there another Ford pump that would bolt up and work with your application?
Probably. Some research is in order.........

Why do people not use the early bronco steering setup. I'm not sure what axle you are using, but when people use the axle from that truck, do they not use the steering set up?
Happy trails!!

well, let me tell you first hand about the e.b. setup. IT SUCKS! first off, 99% of the steering boxes are a very slow ratio. as in, 6.5 turns lock-to-lock. i have heard this is a benefit rock crawling, but i dont think so. also, most of the boxes are a weak link, and leak like crazy (rebuilt or not). as far as the pump goes, they are a joke. most E.B. specialty places (Wild Horses, Duff, BroncoGraveyard) sell a conversion bracket that allows you to run a Chevy P.S. pump. this is because the old style Ford pumps suck. they are very leak prone, failure prone, and in perfect condition are very weak. not to take shots at what is otherwise a very well designed rig, but take it from someone who ownes one... the steering (all of it) is the only thing i hate about my bronc.

First I would somehow find out what the desired operating pressure and flow the steering box you have now requires.
Then I would look for a pump that would work accordingly.
As a last resort I would go full hydro since it is a street driven rig. I would call the WMS boys (http://www.wagonermachine.com/) and get the orbital valve with a return to center option. That way you could make it streetable. It's not cheap, but would solve a lot of potential headaches.

wow, never new about the return to center thing. that would have been very useful on friend's wrangler. that was really the only issue we had with his, as you had no way of knowing were center was, and it would seem to "resonate" the faster you went. then, it would just wallow all over the road...
