I saw a little shock mounted horizontally on the rear suspension yesterday -

What is it for and does it ever need to be replaced? I am guessing that it is some sort of lateral dampener??

It is supposed to dampen the vibrations that can come from the rear differential due to the longer length of the 4-door. The 2-doors don't have them. Many people have taken theirs off their 4-doors without noticeing any difference.
