my explorer recently overheated i pulled over but was unable to locate the leak--when it cooled i checked the hoses they all looked good as far as i could tell--when i refilled the radiater water was coming out from around the area where the tranny and engine join there also apears to be a oily substance in this water any ideas whats wrong with it??? engine still runs good-its the 6 cylinder 2 wdr model-the water poured out while engine wasnt running

Sounds like you blew a head gasket. Check your oil. Is the level really high? The oil will float on the water. Check the inside of the oil cap - is it milky?

THe other possible problem could be a freeze plug.- but it shouldn't have been oily.

oil seems about half a quart high--also would the water run out when its not running if its head gasket?? also when it first blew it was shooting alot of the water into the passenger side wheel well-and none was visible from the top area thnx for the reply:confused:

It sounds like you blew an intake gasket. The "oil" in the water is either remaining anti-freeze mixing with the water, or oil that is on the engine being washed into the water.

what happens if you fill up the radiator and start the truck? As ling as you dont drive it it shouldn't hurt anything. That should give you an idea where it is coming from. You might have burst a heater hose.
He may be right about the oil coming from residue. I had an aluminum intake manifold on a pontiac that developed a hole and leaked like crazy.
