View Full Version : Uwahrrie, NC Run - November 29-30

This place has a lot to offer, and is centrally located for alot of us ECX guys.

The trails here are very "moderate" with only a couple of "more difficult" trails. However, none of the trails can be attempted with a "stock" LWB 4x4.

Last time the turnout was a measly 3 people  , I know we can do better than that!

Here's a link to some pics, a brief description, and a trail map.

http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation/uwharrie/uwharrie_off.htm

So who's game??? :D

Josh Adams

LWB, does that include an extended cab ranger with 32s. Cause I want to come up there, but your "However" kinda makes me wonder.

Jason_25

If you have 32's your rig isn't stock.

You'll be fine!

dang... i'm planning on heading to tellico with the big dawgs in early nov (as passenger unless i win the lotto). i probably can't get outta here twice in a month for wheelin. i'll see if i can though!

jason.. could i handle these trails?

Jason_25
09-26-2002, 10:49 PM
Jason-I can't remember, are your running boards removed? If so, you will be able to do most trails.

Digger196

Sweet. I hope you can make it. It's more fun than some of those trails in Georgia because you're not constantly worried that your life is in danger :D

Of course you can come. Assuming you are 18 or older, if not you will need a parent with you.

Body Damage is a relative thing. Hopefully you won't get a huge dent or anything.

Oh and yes, your pal with the jeep may come too, assuming he is 18 or older.

man i hate that rule. i'm only 16! that sucks, and Dad won't come. oh well

Heh, I was one of the 3 last time. :)

From my experience, a 4 door with 31" tires will get body damage. Not from the obstacles, those you can handle (with the right line and spotter), but the little 'hills' all over the trails that keep the rain from making huge ruts in the trails. Every time I went over one (even the first one into the trails) I basically set the frame on the top of the hill and had to drag the truck over it. The fact that I have a 3" body lift made this possible since the bottom of the doors is now higher than the bottom of the frame. Otherwise I would have been sitting it down on the rocker panels/running boards instead of the frame.
A torsion twist and 31's may make it so the 'hills' give you no trouble, but I doubt it. TT and 32's, maybe.
If you have a body lift, you're good to go. Just have to drive it right.
Factory skid plates are a must. If not, you will have no more gas tank after about 15 feet into the trails.

If you have a 2-door model, you will probably be okay with just 31's and a TT. I don't know, I'm just guessing. Jason had the TT and 32" tires and didn't hit any of the 'hills' all day long. The shorter wheelbase makes it so the back tires start up the 'hill' before the middle of the truck hits the top of it.

A Ranger should be fine.

I must admit that this was one of the most fun trips I've had. I wasn't afraid of rolling over or seriously tearing something up on the trails. (there were other trails I would have, but I didn't do them and there were times I could have, but proper spotting got me through) But, each 'hill' we came to (seems like there were 1000's of them  ) was an obstacle for me, so the entire day was testing my abilities. Jason on the other hand drove over them like they weren't even there. :)

I might make it down there again this time. We'll see as the date gets closer. (have to survive the GWNF run on the 9th and 10th first) ;)

I don't understand why you need to 18 to go. For liability reasons?. Or is that a Park rule?.

I'd be interested in coming up to Uwharrie for a day or a weekend.

Hopefully, I'll have some mods done to the Ex by then, but I don't know. I might have to ride shotgun again.

Do we have an idea for what date this might be?

Friday and Saturday? Sounds good.

I think I'm having family come for Thanksgiving though, that might put a damper on my plans

I'm new to this board but I'm gonna try and haul my ranger up there for this. Are any of you seriously modified? I always like to check out other peoples mods. My ranger's sitting on afull width 44 and 8.8, locked and welded, 37" Swampers. I'll keep checking back to get the final date. I'm gonna try and get some other buddies to come if thats ok. Not all are Rangers or Ex's, but all good guys who I've wheeled with for years. All over 18, and all experienced drivers. Hope this turns out well. Later. Coda

Jason_25
09-29-2002, 07:56 PM
Coda, you are welcome to come. Whereever you go, I will follow. I will be able to hold my own. Not everyone shares that opinion though. My buddy is hopefully gonna take his fullsize chevy with 37's out there so you will certainly have another big dawg with you out there.

Because of the vast difference in trucks, and depending on how many people want to go, we may need to split up into two groups. Uwharrie is a fairly good size places so that would be no problem.

jasonb
09-30-2002, 03:55 PM
if there are no spare front seats for the tellico run... i will likely come to this one.
as it looks right now... i'm waiting to see if dave (taxxman2k) goes to tellico. he is the only one that would have a front seat available, and i don't want to ride in the back seats.. you can't see anything from there! anyway, i'll let you know whenever he finds out.

10-01-2002, 06:39 PM
hum, that 18 rule is bull. i can see where y'all are coming from on that. but, it won't matter for me anymore this Friday.
I bet you could get a parent to sign to liability waiver. maybe a possibility? It could get a lot more people involved.

edit-oh yeah and by the way? how come no one will admit me to ecx? i think my truck qualifies. Everyone just assumes it's just some teenager looking for a sticker.

Jason_25
10-01-2002, 06:40 PM
How is it bull? If you don't like it, don't come. It's as simple as that.

93XLT105tr
10-01-2002, 06:46 PM
I'm just saying... it seems unfair to not even attempt to allow u-18's to participate. And seeing as i wasn't even trying to start anything, i was just addressing what a lot of teenages would think was unfair... you're acting pretty immature, another stereotype of u-18's(however in most cases you're right). I could care less about your rule cause in two days i'll be 18.

edit-and now i remember, you were one of the ones i emailed about ecx

Jason_25
10-01-2002, 07:11 PM
This has already been explained in full, and in fact, I think I am acting maturely.

I don't care about stereotypes.

I just don't want anyone under 18 with us without a parent. I don't want to be subject to legal action when the ultra-dangerous shackles break on that truck on your website.

yob_yeknom
10-01-2002, 07:36 PM
Well, I'll lay down the law simply because I can. Immature? You turn 18, have a minor get hurt while out with you, get sued by their parents, screw your life, then come back and complain about the rules. No signed waiver will work, it doesn't work like it does in school when you go on a field trip.

Yes, laws and liability can suck, but that's life.

And yes, we do attempt to let minors participate. We will let you come if your parent or legal guardian come with you. That's better than nothing.

And all attendees (even over 18) have to sign waivers to be included in the group. You agree to all this by joining the club (it's in the rules).

93XLT105tr
10-01-2002, 09:55 PM
ya whatever, i understand about the liability thing, it still sucks, but y'all don't have be such @ssholes about it. If y'all are what this club is all about I don't want to be any part of it. And likewise i'm sure you don't want me to be a part of it.

Jason_25
10-01-2002, 09:57 PM
Great.

Good luck in your future endeavours.

raynr
10-01-2002, 10:18 PM
Dude, how were they being "@ssholes"? I thought they kind of explained it rather fairly and told you pretty straight whats goin on. I think that these guys are pretty knowledgable when it comes down to all that stuff.

Oh yeah, Jason I'm kinda interested in going, don't know if I'd be able to go yet but it's a possibility, just need to get my step-dad to go. Sounds like a pretty cool place to go. Let's get up sometime and maybe do some muddin or something like that around here. I told Randal he needs to ride in a real vehicle when it comes to that stuff and he is also said some stuff about Uwharrie. Let me know dude.

I hadn't intended to come across as an ******* and apologize that I did, but you do what you think is best for you. And no, it's not that I don't want you in the club, I just don't want your attitude towards things in the club. People change over time, along with their attitudes about things. If that ever happens, you're welcome to shoot me an email.

In a couple of hours you will be 18. Think about how you can now get sued, go to jail, etc. for all kinds of stupid crap. Stuff that you never had to worry about before. It sucks. Maybe then you will better understand our point of view. The rules may make it harder for minors to wheel with us, but it makes it a lot easier on the rest of the group.

Speaking as someone who will be 18 in a few months, that's so scary to sit there and really think about it

Hopefully. The thing is, I'm a senior in high school right now, so this grading period that I'm in is the one that gets sent to colleges. My parents are really freaking out about my schoolwork and grades right now. But this grading period ends on the 18th (next Friday), so they should calm down a little, and then I'll be able to ask them next weekend.

I'll let you know as soon as possible

That's what I'm hoping. But we've been butting heads a lot recently, so I don't exactly know how it's going to turn out. And I also have to ask for something big today, so I don't know. Hopefully it will all be good.

Hey, how many trucks are attending? How organized is this going to be? Are you guys camping there or what? I might be interested.

jasonb
10-21-2002, 02:28 PM
i doubt there will be a huge attendance.. but it will be fairly organized.
i plan to camp friday night somewhere. i'm too cheap to get a room somewhere so i'll sleep in my truck if i have to. i'll try to camp somewhere though. if we are riding sunday too.. i'll camp sat night as well.

i know the date says 6-7. i won't be leaving until around 4:00 that friday so i won't get there until after dark. anyone wanting to camp is welcome to join me.. assuming camping is allowed in the natl forest there.

diablo5969
10-22-2002, 05:28 PM
Well, it appears I will be out.

I feel bad to back out, because this is the third time I've had to do this on a run. Luckily, and for that reason, I did not get myself too involved with the planning.

There is an infinitessimally small chance that I might be able to perform a miracle and come along. But I'm not even counting on it.

Sorry about that.

I hope everyone has fun! And I want to see pictures when you all are done! :)

yob_yeknom
10-22-2002, 09:26 PM
A later date is good for me. It will give me more time to save to get my truck prepared to wheel again. I won't be wheeling anymore until that happens.

AdamsGuitar
11-06-2002, 10:42 PM
Hey guys, I just got my X a month or so ago and I'm looking to test out the offroading capabilities of my truck. It's a mechanically stock 1995 EB with a fresh tranny (just over 1400 miles on the tranny) and the larger EB wheels (dunno actual measurements; can anyone clue me in? I know they're larger than the normal X 4x4 wheels/tires)

Would this run be a good thing for me? Would I be looking at severe body damage?

diablo5969
11-06-2002, 11:19 PM
From what I've heard, Uwharrie would be a great place for testing out your Ex. I haven't actually had a chance to get up there yet, but I think it's just the right level for testing an Ex's limits.

No severe body damage or anything to that extent.

Just out of curiosity, did anyone decide on a new date yet?

AdamsGuitar
11-06-2002, 11:29 PM
I just went to the website and it looks like a winner to me :)

I'm available for pretty much any date. I have a friend with an old Isuzu Trooper. Would he be welcomed or pelted with rotten vegetables? :)

jasonb
11-08-2002, 01:47 PM
chase.. its now the weekend of the 7th. maybe a moderator could change the dates in the topic?
gonna make it now?

i'm still in for sure 100% unless my truck blows up!

trying to pull together funds to throw some bigger meats under by then too.. but that's looking kinda slim now.

well i don't guess he would be pelted with rotten vegetables if he showed up. i don't plan on bringing any of those with me. not sure about others though.

and as far as taking a bone stock through.. i'll let Jason_25 reply to that. he's been there before. from what i can tell... your running boards or rockers will get aquainted with the rocks pretty good, but that's about it.

AdamsGuitar
11-08-2002, 02:11 PM
I don't have running boards, so I don't have that to worry about. I think it should be OK though. I don't really want to replace these tires though, as they're almost brand new (at least 75% tread left).

11-08-2002, 04:52 PM
Adam you're welcome to come, but except some minor body damage if you wanna have any fun out there.

But I'll let you all know soon.

as far as dates.. i don't care what date.. as long as it isn't turkey day weekend or later than the 21st of dec. the 7th or the 14th is fine.

I haven't been able to get in touch with Jason (I'm trying to join ECX) so I don't know.

I am going up to Uwharrie with a friend this weekend, so anyone else is welcome to join us if you want.

jasonb
11-26-2002, 08:55 PM
so what's the plan.. is this still a go? time is approaching really quick!
who is still interested?
who will definately make it?

i can still make it for the weekend of the 7th. i will likely be camping or staying with a friend that lives about 30 minutes away. i'll camp if anyone else wants to.

can i get a show of hands as to who is going for sure...
and do any of you know the trail system there other than jason_25? jason where are you man?

Do you mean to Uwharrie, or somewhere else? If it's too Uwharrie, we should meet.

Sweet! Someone can still go.

Can you make it to uwharrie tomorrow? If so, we need to definitely meet.

Ok here's a map of the trail system itself, although it's not terribly accurate
http://members.dialstar.com/ezduzit/uwharrie.gif

And here's some short directions:
From Troy, NC:
The forest is 10 miles north of Troy, Troy is west of Sanford. From Troy, head north on NC 109, turn west (left) onto Mullinix Road. Proceed about 1.5 miles. Trail head is about .25 miles to the right after pavement turns to gravel.

If you pass mullinix rd. and stay on 109 for 2 or 3 miles you'll find a gas station on the left where all the wheelers go to air up and grab stuff to eat. We hope to meet you there at 12:00. Is that cool?

My cell # is (252) 670-1962 . Be sure to call me if you have any questions.

Sounds good! Mine is 704-408-5286

Mappoint tells me it will take us almost 2 hours to get there. Do you have any idea if that's accurate coming from Charlotte? It's fine if it is, I just need to know when we need to leave.

I'd say that sounds about right, but I bet that number assumes you will be following the speed limit :D

To guess, I would say closer to an hour and a half.

Do you plan to wheel your truck?

Right now it's me (very mild explorer), my friend with a chevy on 37" boggers, Kspride, and his friend with a Tacoma.

I'll definitely be wheeling my truck. Gotta get my feet wet and all :)

To be safe I guess we'll leave at 10:00. We'll make sure to take some magazines to read ;)

The "we" is my dad and me; he wanted to tag along and see what it's like, too.

Cool Adam I will see you tomorrow!

But BTW KSPRIDE had to back out. No matter, we will still have fun.

Well, it seems we missed you, Jason. I heard you call me, but the area of signal I passed through seemed to be about 10 feet long, so I couldn't hear you. We finally got to the Amoco you talked about at around 12:30, so we decided to go it alone. We ended up driving around the forest for about an hour trying to find a trail (their map isn't exactly accurate, or to scale, for that matter). We ended up going on Wolf Den over to something Dam. Yeah, um, I don't think that's what we should have gone on, as I think it was an ATV trail. There were little ATV "jump hills" about every 20 feet that I had to drive over, and I never once saw another truck on that trail, just a lot of ATV's and two dirt bikes.

I have some pictures of the first part of the trail on my digicam and will be uploading them to my site later tonight (click The Green Lantern), but the latter portion has no pictures, as I was too busy avoiding ATV's and dancing around rocks and my dad was a bit scared ;)

Too bad we missed you, man. Give me a call the next time you plan to head there again and we can actually meet, since I know where it is now. Maybe then I'll get on a trail that's intended for SUV's :P

Adam we were about 20 minutes late because my buddy in the chevy ran out of gas

We got to the gas station around 12:20 and waited 5 minutes, then went on. I guess we missed you by about 5 minutes :(

Did you see any other vehicles out there?

We saw LOTS. It was mind blowing seeing all the trucks. We saw a lifted late-model montero, multiple lifted land rover discoveries, and even an H2

On the big obstacle on sawmill (missed it last time) a guy in a lifted discovery and a guy in a D90 were going up in front of us. The D90 made it look like a cakewalk. But the discovery on 32's took about 5 passes to make it. I schooled him and did it on the first try and got a round of applause and driver of the day award from his 4x4 club LOL

I didn't get to make it up Daniel this time because about halfway up I pulled over to let a Jeep that was going down pass by and my explorer slid down the side!!!!! We had to put a bunch of tow straps, a chain, and my highlift on her to pull her back up. Let's just say that if I had gotten out of my seat, she would have rolled!

All in all, a great trip. I wish I got pics this time.......

Well, actually, I only saw a convoy of Jeeps once. Other than that (except for parked or driving on the roads, of course) we saw ZERO trucks on our trail. Again, I dunno much about Uwharrie, but I think I went on an ATV trail (Wolf Den to Falls Dam), as all I saw was a bunch of ATV's and two bikes.

I got a couple of pics. Bear in mind that these pics are before it got nasty. http://www.adam-robinson.net/truck/trailruns/2002-11-29/index.html

Aaah, I see your post now. Yeah, they're a pain. I can personally vouch that TT, shackles, and 31"s (no bl) will get you through. I did scrape the frame SEVERAL times (and one time ended up spinning the wheels in 4Lo, but not to the point of being high centered; I was able to reverse, reset my position, and go on as three ATV guys behind me cheered me on), but I didn't get so much as a scratch or a ding on my body. It even kept alignment, which amazed me, but then again, it was my first time wheeling, so I didn't know what to expect.

I would most certainly be up to going back there ANY time. If anyone plans to head up there, let me know and you've got a partner unless there's something that I absolutely have to do.

Also, I emailed you about getting an ECX sticker, as I talked to Jason and he says I'm in. I sent a couple of other things in the email, too. Did you get it or should I resend?

I am so upset that I was unable to go. I was actually looking forward to it, right until the old office called. Those Bastards. Next time I will be there as long asI am not working. I wanted to test my Ex out. I havent had a good opportunity since I put the lift on it. Let me know if you guys plan anything else any time soon.

Yes LOL it happens all the time. I'm not exacly sure why though, I have very little lift. It's probably due to lack of suspension travel.
