View Full Version : Auto Door Locks?
topo4u2 09-29-2002, 02:16 PM Another question? Sorry!
I just read in my manual that I may have automatic door locks. You know, as you drop her in drive the doors lock.
Does anyone know if all 95 XLT's came with this option? Again, I just bought my Explorer and they do not work. The manual shows a way to enable them so I may give it a try. Maybe the previous owner disabled for some reason.
Thanks, again.
BradE. 09-29-2002, 02:20 PM Try the procedure in the manual to activate them via the keyless entry system. If the battery is disconnected the system will sometimes turn the feature off.
My 95 EB doesn't do it, but my 96 Limited does. I would love to figure out how to scrap it, I hate it. They lock when you come off the brake for the first time in drive or reverse.

topo4u2 09-29-2002, 02:49 PM Thanks for the replies Robb and Brad!
I just got them to work using the manual. The only problem being that now that I know I have it, Im not sure I really want it.
Can you guys give me some pro's and con's of having auto locks?
Thanks.
03ExplorerSPT 09-29-2002, 07:52 PM Well lets see.
Pros: Its safer so if some runs up to your truck and tries to open your door they can't, I'm thinking it would be less likely for the door to open in a collision. Thats all of the pros I can think of at the moment.
Cons: If you have passengers in the back you have to remember to unlock the doors for them (I usually drive by myself so I don't have this problem since the front doors unlock by themselves when you open the door). Thats my only con on the auto locks.
Hope that helps.
My big con is the fact that I am in and out of it all day getting stuff out of the back. Every time I go to open the rear, it is locked. EVERYTIME. Of course, this isn't a huge deal, but right now, my Unlock switch on my driver door is not working very well (obvious bad contacts). So everytime I get out and have to get in the back, it is like a 5 minute ordeal.

MONMIX 09-29-2002, 08:00 PM I have them and I think they are great. I am not gona disconnect them for any thing. Oh , by the way. You have no need to say you are sorry. That is what this whole site is here for. To ask questions and to learn.
I am sure EVERYBODY has asked more than their share of questions.
Look at it this way , soon enough you'll be be answering questions for the next guy.
Nobody here minds helping each other out. We actually like it :)
topo4u2 09-29-2002, 08:05 PM Thanks Monmix,
You did not mention what you liked so much about the locks. Was it for saftey?
section525 09-29-2002, 08:09 PM I hate mine. I'm also constantly getting in and out and getting stuff out of the back. It seems just after you get out of the drivers seat the damn things lock. I would have been locked out numerous times if it wasn't for my keypad.
topo4u2 09-29-2002, 08:11 PM Hey section 525, it is easy to disable the "auto locks."
section525 09-29-2002, 08:18 PM I just read that the other day. What do you do? Turn the key forward and cycle the locks?
topo4u2 09-29-2002, 08:31 PM Hi John, I just looked at your website and you got a sharp truck. I sent you an email, hope you get it.
Yes, I disabled mine this afternoon, I m not sure if I can remember how to do it but I will try.
Hold the 7/8 key down and within 5 sec touch the 3/4 key and release then release the 7/8 key. The horn should beep to advise of the change.
If I screwed that up someone else may be able to help. I think the answer is in the "thread under power locks"
If you need to I can easily look it up in my manual for you.

My unlock switches did this on both doors. For some reason they weren't working well and then one day they were working perfectly again. Maybe yours will do the same.
phat97exp 09-30-2002, 03:22 AM Im having a similar problem with my explorer, none of my windows will roll down except for my driver side, so everytime I get a car full of people, im the one who has the rol their windows up or down, would this be of bad contacts to?:(
section525 09-30-2002, 03:28 AM Yeah.. if your window lock is not on.. it probably has a bad contact, and is in a sense 'stuck on'.
'96explorereddiebauer 09-30-2002, 11:11 AM I personally love using the auto locks. I guess it gives me a sense of security. Now onto the problems with getting off and unloading stuff. I understand what you guys have to go through. It's weird but I developed this habit to unlock the doors whenever I open the door but I don't have contact problems you guys have *knock on wood*. I know what you guys mean though.
Texan01 09-30-2002, 12:15 PM my biggest grip with auto locks, is it's just more "Big Brother" to mess with my life. I've driven enough cars to not care for doors automatically locking. To me auto locks, auto volume controls, auto lights, auto seats, auto mirrors, etc make me feel like I'm moron and I can't do anything for myself. I especially hate memory seats, I like my set it once and forget it. when I worked at Carmax I cursed those things more often than not because they ALL seemed to go all the way forward and I'm 6'2" so I then have to move the seat back to something resembling room in there for me.
I do like automatic transmissions though, stickshifts are fun, but I wouldn't want to drive one in traffic all the time, unless it's a sweet shifting one.
That's just my opinion which is different than most others, but that's what makes the world a fun place to live.
MONMIX 09-30-2002, 08:00 PM I am confused. Don't all of your door un-lock automaticly
when you open the door from the inside ?
