Tonight I figured out how to get into 4wd Low properly... Or so I think... the light comes on where it didn't the way I was attempting before... But I am concerned about the thunk I hear when it engages and disengages... Is this normal, or what?

You can hear a thump when mine engauges/disengauges. How were you trying to engauge it before?

The thunk is normal....don't worry about it.

I was trying to engage it by just pushing the button like the last owner told me it's supposed to work... I guess he never read the owners manual or something... i don't know if he even gave me that...

I was playing around and put it in 4wd and the pushed the low range button and it came on... All I was using last night was 4wd and the 2 and 1 gears on the sheer ice...

the correct way to engage the 4 low is to put it in neutral first foot on break than engage, the 4wd could be done at anytime.

just for a little schooling, this may seem normal but some dont know about it. if you ask me the 4 lock on the fly as advertised is fu*king false advertisement, i tried it on my leet x and ugh ugh... the ford manufacture gave me a nice compensation :)

always make sure you put the truck into nuetral before going into 4wd L or H and then back into nuetral when going back into 2wd.

the thunk or thump or thud or bump or even a little grind is the 4wd engaging, connecting, and locking in its normal on even the newest of push buttong 4x4 trucks car and suvs :D :D :D :D :D :D

u can engage 4wh when you are going about 2 miles an hour on the 94s as stated by the ford rep manufacturer in arizona :D

Do you have a manual t-case? We had a '91 we could put in 4wd high up to 50mph.

wow thats nice, the x i riped the guts out of had a manual transfer case and i was switching into 4wh now the x is highly modified and i wouldnt dare try it again but i might consider trying it out on my town x. 50mph wow that would be nice, i was going up a hill tho maybe thats it. i was going up a hill at about 15 mph and the back wheels started slipping badly, i reached down and jammed it into 4wh and it sounded like putting a bunch of forks in a blender ugh bad

You can NEVER engage 4wd while the tires are spinning.

:o ooo on the contrair the transmission shifts to nuetral and then you can, what i did was ran up the hill threw it into nuetral and punched it in 4wh and it tore the guts out of the t-case.

Well what did you expect? You didn't use it like it was designed to be used :rolleyes: You put in in low range while coasting in neutral? It's only shift on the fly into 4wd high, and maybe not on manual t-cases. The 91 we had was push button.

take a look at this and tell me what im susposed to do lol they said it was shift on the fly and that was written down on the pro.
and it was high range, not low range........

thats how the nob works, the only time you need to be stoped and in nuetral is for low range.. but if you try and pull lever down while moving without being in nuetral transmission it will grind and not lock in

i am curious? how in the hell did you do it at 50 mph? that to me seems imposible.. details pls?

My 1991 was push button. 50mph push Button, your in 4wd.. The truck I drive for work(Chevy)has a manual t-case and you can shift it into 4wd high while moving. I dunno how the manual t-case Explorers work. I've never had one.

wow that seems impossible to be able to switch that fast, how are the gears able to cope with such sudden force and power? I have never heard or seen anyone do that and ive been to a lot of events and ridden in a lot of trucks, my dads 99 chevy is push button the dealership told him not to exceed 10 mph and his 2003 is manual and the dealership told him not to switch on the fly.... i dont understand how you could have possibly shifted locked the hubs and powered the front wheels sucessfully at 50 mph pls explain?

I can't explain it, I didn't design it. It's possible. My 96 is fully shift on the fly. Our old 1991 was shift on the fly. That's about all I can say for sure:confused:

I'm not familiar with the '94 and earlier transfer cases, but I do know on the '95 and up you can shift into High at any speed, although most people recommend keeping the speed below 50 MPH. The Control Trac transfer case does not have to switch any gears when going into High or lock the front hubs. The '95 and up do not have hubs, the front wheels are connected permanently (directly) to the front differential throuch CV joints. When the transfer case reacts to being put into 4Auto on '95 & '96 and 4 High on '97 and up, it does it electronically though the use of clutches. The '95 & '96 also have to have the front differential locked in through a vacuum disconnect. The '97 and up do not, the driveshaft is permanently connected to the differential. When the transfer case gets put into 4 wheel drive, the clutches are energized which allow them to grip. On a manual transfer case, you are actually changing gears to enable the front drive shaft so I can imagine you would need to be stopped.

I have shifted my '97 into High at speeds up to 60 MPH with no ill affects nor strange sounds. Rydin Dirtay you live in Phoenix, I work in Phoenix. I'd be happy to give you a demonstration if you don't think it can be done.
