Hi,
I have an intermittant problenm w/ my turn signals. The previous owner of this truck ( Honest Jons Used Cars of San Diego). The factory flasher unit is gone and instead of this are two generic flash pots. They seem to have a life of their own as to when the feel like working. The em. flaser function always works, its onlly the turn signals that don"t .
Soo... is ithere some thing differnt about the factory flashers, or is it the whole turn signal assembly?
any ideas will be aprreciated. I am not hot about buying the wrong Ford factoy parts if I can help this
thanks, Zekex2

Could be just the turn switch (on the steering column). Do the four way flashers work consistantly? If you wiggle the column switch does that make a difference? Is it only left turn or right? Also any decent dealer will be able to supply the correct flasher but they may have moved some of the wires to fit the two generic ones. Do you have a wiring diagram? I'm sure we can sort this one for you. All the best.

all of the 4 way work conststantly. wiggling the stick has not changed any thing. When they fail it is both sides but not the 4 ways. Ocasionally kicking the two pots that keep falling from under the dash will effect them. ( these are the after market gerneric units that I found instead of the facory unit)
What I am not understanding is why they work so intermitantly. My experience with flasher units are that they simply work or are broken. I was at auto zone yesterday and saw a guy buy a column unit and walk out and get into an ford van. So I thought that I would throw it out here and see if this is a 98 X trend (like the radio display problems that ford denies) or just my truck.
I have the Haynes book with the electrical schematics so if all else fails I can do it the hard way with a meter, time, and my brain. I was just hoping that some one had had similar problems and what the fix was.
I am currently working on Big Blue, my 86 f350 crew cab, diesel dually. That is my everyday work truck so it usually gets first priority. I don't drive the X for work as it still looks really nice and my wife wants to keep tht way (imagine that).
Any ways I digress. Input is appreaciated. Thanx
Well, I say try replacing the relays and see if it fixes the problem. Sounds like they might just not fit well. If that's not it, it's probably the switch stalk.

yeah, thats the way i was leaning. due to the link between bang ing on them and occasionaly getting a result. It just means that I will have to get under the dash, which in my old age is just too much fun.
thanx
