View Full Version : back to dealer.. need help
elemenopee 11-17-2002, 10:56 PM ok.. the trans is ALREADY slipping after 3k miles.. so i need to take it back.. i just noted that there is 1 liter too much of trans fluid in there too... so thats no good.. also.. i had mentioned it previously but my truck wont top 80 mph very easily, the thing must be FLOORED... so..
what should i have the dealership look at along with the trans.. i am not capable of doing the work myself as i have NO tools and have a 30hr a week job and 20 of school in class.. so yeah..
i know they should check the slack in the throttle line guy.. sorry this isnt super technical...
i know to check the o2 sensors, the mas, and the pcv valve... what else????
oh it goes in tuesday around 4 pm.. so let me know by then!!
oh yeah... 169k miles..
elemenopee 11-17-2002, 11:35 PM to the top!
psychotic 11-17-2002, 11:53 PM have you checked your spark plugs? I dont know.. I'd tell them those things you've come up with to check. And also tell them your problem, and if none of those things are wrong, have them diagnose it.
rgiles 11-18-2002, 01:07 AM What do you mean by it's slipping besides not going over 80? Was it rebuilt 3k miles ago?
DarkFox1 11-18-2002, 07:12 AM hrmm, sounds alittle familiar.
is this your 2nd transmission? sorry,I haven'ty read any other posts aboiut this.. also 5.0? 4.0? I hear the 4.0's tranny is quite the PITA.. from my experience the 4R70W isn't exactly a queen either heh.
I haven't been up much above 80, but I dont have to stomp it to maintain, is that what you're talking about? if so I'd have a diagnostic ran, immediatley after I checked my plugs to make sure they were all in g/c . also.. do you have any smells at all? sulfer, gas, anything? I get a sulfurish smell when I stomp mine, but I was told its normal so I suppose some smell is expected. just so long as it doesn't make your eyes water.
any other symptoms? and how can you describe the slipping?
I've been through my truck with a fine toothd comb trying to find somethin with mine, and I found nothing, but I learned a lot, so I might be of alittle more help now than before.
elemenopee 11-18-2002, 08:57 AM well yeah.. it slips.. like.. i press the gas... i hear it "going" but no tire movement... the truck takes a few seconds to kick into overdrive when i punch it.. read another thread like that and they said the throttle cable was loose... somthing about a zip tie helping it get full throttle.. the engine has something "rattling" in the front end too... which i dont like...
but i can mash it.. i mean pettle all the way down.. and it CREEPS to 80 mph... i mean.. it wont hold 70 well at all... you can hear how hard it is on the engine... it sounds LOUD...
DarkFox1 11-18-2002, 11:06 AM that sounds a bit familiar... perhaps mine is slipping..
it would be my guess, and I'm definatley no expert.. but I'd say that thing is slipping something awful by the time you get up to speed. I'd have my torque converter looked at.. if nothing is found, I'd have em test drive it, drop the pan.. flush fluids.. whatever it takes, theres obviously a problem there.
if NOTHING comes out of this transmission analysis.. I would then take alook at the rearend.. again I am almost certain you are having slipping because of a bad torque converter, or something in that area, but if its not the engine.. you only have the parts behind it that need to be looked at heh
elemenopee 11-18-2002, 02:53 PM $915 dollars for new ball joints, and the upper controll arm. WHOO ****ING HOO...
not to mention i need a TON more work.. like the rear doors fixed so they open again *why does this happen to explorers??* need some light engine work too.. so yeah.. then its just running... not included are the aesthetic things it needs, like a new door handle, interior pieces, etc..
trucks are frustrating as hell.
daniel cauchon 11-18-2002, 02:56 PM but what about you prob with the trans ?????? how much for that ?
elemenopee 11-18-2002, 03:08 PM trans is brand new under warranty still.. so its FREE!! weee.. only 2300 dollar fee about 2 months ago, and STILL in the shop.. haha.
rgiles 11-18-2002, 03:20 PM I would wait to get a 2nd opinion on the ball joints etc. Funny that they didn't mention this when you were in for the transmission the 1st time (or did they). Don't trust dealers until you get independent verification and then figure out what your most cost effective fix is.
DarkFox1 11-18-2002, 03:24 PM whats with your balljoins that makes you/them think they need to be replaced?
elemenopee 11-18-2002, 03:25 PM they screech when i go over bumps.. haha.. even at super slow speeds.
DarkFox1 11-18-2002, 03:28 PM screech? like a squeaking noise? mines been doing that for years.. I thought it was just cold shocks..
I have a thing now where my stock tire rubs.. or something.. theres a grinding noise when I turn the wheel and move slowly.. you ever had anything like that? I think this is tie rods..
I dont see how balljoints could go bad in under 20 years.. unless you do 75 down baja style tracks or something lol
elemenopee 11-18-2002, 03:30 PM yeah its ball joints.. put the front end of your truck up in the air.. try to move the tires up and down.. if there is ANY movement then your ball joints are bad.. get moog greasable.. then you wont have to worry anymore.. :)
DarkFox1 11-18-2002, 03:33 PM na, I'm not about to fix it.. lol it aint THAT annoying. I aint even had it looked at.
sorry to hear about yer problems man.. thank god for the tranny warranty
