I have a 98 explorer with the AWD, I heard that you can hook up a switch, and flip it into 2wd? How is that suppost to work, cause its all about gears, not switches??

i know u can remove ur front driveshaft to make it 2wd ..

I'm not sure if you could b/c the AWD is always engaged. It might be possible on a 4wd explorer to do this b/c a friend of mine has a 4wd Denali and took out the fuse or switch (something like that) and it's only 2wd now, truckin or some magazine said that also - but I think it only applies to 4wd vehicles.

I think you'd have to remove the shaft to b/c 2wd on an awd Explorer.

The current way to make a auto 4wd vehicle 2wd starts at Stadx2's post 3/4 of the way down page 2. It involves interrupting the brown wire under the driver's seat. That wire controls the control trac clutch in the xfer case.

No that will not work. That thread is for V6 explorers only. I'm not sure what will happen on the V8 models if you remove the front driveshaft but I will venture a guess. I beleive the t-case will direct all the power to the front and you will not move at all. :(

im doing the 2wd swap soon.. prolly spring break.. when im done i'll have a TON of pics, and it will be throughly documented... this is the essential plan.. unless something happens where i decide not to swap out... keep in touch with me and i'll let ya know whats happening... going to do a 5.0 swap too.. pending the funds..
