View Full Version : ttb unit
JGAMBLE 12-11-2002, 07:04 AM ok so we got out first snow of the year today:D so while taking the daughter to her baby-sitters the ttb unit sounds like it's trying to come out of the truck, popping and banging all over the place. More than once the driver's side front tire rubbed while braking. Then when turning into work I make a sharp right and the front lifts up about 2 inches and then slams down. hate to do it but unless you guys have any ideas she's going to the dealers soon.:(

section525 12-11-2002, 07:10 AM You're saying your suspension is falling off?!? If so, I wouldn't be driving anywhere. I would get this looked at ASAP though. Did you take a look under there and see if anything looked broken or loose?
JGAMBLE 12-11-2002, 07:13 AM yeah, been under her about 6 times in the past month. Just replaced the r.a. bushing about six months ago, the shocks are about 2 yrs old, and nothing looks outta place. The only thing I'm thinking it could be is that the wheel bearings or something in there is messed up:( just hoping somebody can help me find the magic "On" switch and make it all better before paying someone else to look at it.

FMExplorer 12-11-2002, 08:31 AM Jack up one side and do a couple of tests...
1 - wiggle tire inside out from the top and bottom - if there is play, you got ball joint issues.
2 - take tire off and wiggle rotor - if there is play you got bearing problems.
Do you have auto or manual locking hubs?
Be sure to check both sides.
Check to be sure your spring didn't come unseated in the spring bucket - top of spring
Next - check you u-joints. You have 3 of them up fron - 1 drivers side next to the knuckle and 2 passenger side. Look to see if the caps have come off - there are 4 caps per joint and they are located in the yoke connecting both pieces together. If all of that checks out, take it in.

MyExpWork 12-11-2002, 10:58 AM This may be a stupid question but did you have it in 4wd? If so was there enough snow on the ground to allows tires to slip enough to be in 4wd? I don't know if the 94 is different front suspension from my 91, but what you described happened to me when engaged 4X4 on hard, clean surface.

TheRookie 12-11-2002, 11:15 AM Yeah sounds like it was in 4 to me also. That will happen in 4 if you have traction on all 4 wheels. If not it is most likely ball joint related.
JGAMBLE 12-11-2002, 11:51 AM yeah, she was in 4hi. It was worse in 4hi, but it does it in 2wd also. Balljoints sound expensive. anyone have it done and what's the cost. I'm into overdraft, so money's kinda tight:( it's too danged cold out to do any serious work on it though. Well maybe if I had some Jack Daniels, but that's another story

TheRookie 12-11-2002, 01:07 PM eh ball joints arent too tough to do yourself. It is cold here too but I have been doing a lot to the X anyway. You can get new balls (huhuhuhuhu) pretty cheap from any parts place.
MyExpWork 12-11-2002, 07:14 PM Do you have auto lock hubs? I forgot to look at what year your X is.
If you went from 4hi to 2wd and you have auto hubs, they won't disengage the front wheels unless you drive backwards for about 15 feet or so. This means that you still could feel the same thing in 2wd with the hubs locked.
Just giving you some ideas before ball joints. Those symptons sound like a 4wd useage on high traction surface.

JGAMBLE 12-14-2002, 07:11 AM alrighty gentlement, got the truck back from the shop with a diagnosis. The auto locking hubs have gone bad:( They want like $620 just for the parts. Needless to say, that ain't gonna happen. I remember reading on here somewhere about a kit to convert to manual. Was wondering if anyone had any info on it. Everyday I come one step closer to the government filtering this site out so I can't spend a lot of time searching. Any help is greatly appreciated.

FMExplorer 12-14-2002, 07:19 AM You can get the hubs and conversion kit for about $150 +/-. Warn and Milemarker make good kits (and they are exactly the same). You will need 1 special tool at about $15 to install the kit. Click here for instructions (http://www.flexplorers.com/Tech_Tips/Man_Hub_Ins_/man_hub_ins_.html)
