my 98 explorer 4.0 SOHC has done 120,000 miles and its still going strong apart from one window switch :-) how much more life does it have left do you think?

The motor can probably go at least 200-300 thousand miles if it seems to be running well now. The tranny honestly could go at any time. Barring those 2 areas, the rest of the truck could have minor problems but overall could last a very long time.

alec, i think the sohc's in 98 all have the 5 speed auto (but dont quote me) - isnt that supossed to be a lot better than the trannies that keep blowing up in earlier years with the ohv?

It is updated, but still basically the same tranny. Because I got all the updates with my rebuild, I basically have the newer tranny now in the old case. I just don't have the right computer program to give it 5 gears, only 4.

my old friend with a 92 xl just peaked 300k, hes on his 2nd trans, but its still a good vehicle.

I had a 92 with 180,000 miles that ran good enough for me to not be afraid of the 130,000 on the 93 i just bought. As long as you maintain them well they can last a very long time.
