View Full Version : intake/muffler LOWER milage?

Hello,
After an extensive investigation as to why i'm not getting the milage I would like (15mgp in the city), i've been told, that the intake and muffler (Magnaflow) actully will lower milage?!?!?! This is because the X now sucks in more air, so it put in more fuel to reach the right A/F ratio and the muffler only enhances this effect, therefore sucking in more fuel?

I"m confused though, cause as far as i knew, such mods actully enhanced the efficiency of the any car, thus making it use less fuel for the same work - make any sense. I"m a little dissappointed now, as my X is now a little louder than it used to be (not much, but still, i can hear it intake for sure) and I"m I"m not getting lower MGP. Any thought or ideas (of how to quiet the intake , i've thrown out the air box....)
THanks

Who told you that?

I have a question for you now... do u like to hear the sound of your truck when you step on the gas?

Alot of it depends on your driving style as well, if you are always winding it up to hear the exhaust and intake you are gonna be lucky to get 12mpg. It is how you drive it. With the intake and exhaust you should see a higher MPG number than before, 15 is fairly feasible in the city depending on what kind of city driving it is. I get about 14 around town so i know i could get 15 if i wanted to. Just try to look at your driving style and you may notice a few things and look at the area you drive through..is it hilly, are you stopped alot, is it a lot of stop-and-go type things, that may say alot about why you are only getting ____ mpg.

Have a good one

dammit chucky...someone ALWAYS beats me to it, i am gonna start writing one word then goin back and editing it once it is posted just so i can have the first shot :D

Yes, you will use more gas as you get on the throttle than before due to more air being introduced. However, in city driving when the throttle body doesn't open very much (if you drive conservatively) the intake and exhaust won't make a difference because the TB is the restrictor.

In other words, if you get on the gas, you will use more gas ;)

I get much worse mileage when I drive the X than when my Wifes drives it, b/c I LOVE to hear my Flowmaster!!

Also, when you had the intake and catback installed, did you disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 min? The KKM write up on explorer4x4 says that mileage will actualy drop if the computer is not reset after the changes. My KKM/Magnaflow system has dropped my rpms across the band, so I should be seeing better mileage (haven't driven it enough yet). But I did know that my testing tank (read~WOT) after getting the intake/exhaust was something like 12.6 mpg.. Hehe, I was soo proud ;)

Hehe, stock I averaged about 16 mpg a tank.

Now I get anywhere from 7 to 22 mpg :) It's all on how you drive, not really what mods you add.

I'll try the dissconect battery thing, never actully thought about it, i just sort of thought it might 'learn' over a period of time, but with everything that's been done, it might not be a bad idea.

I might even look into changing the muffler back again - which is a shame really, but i don't care to hear ANYTHING at any time while driving, i used to have car that had no cat, headers and a little muffler, it was great, fast as hell, but annoying as ever.

Don't ditch the Magnaflow if you just got it, you will be happy with the sound.

Definately reset your computer for better mileage and power gains.

i drive a 2001 explrer sport and i was getting 400 litres to the tank and im gettong 300, what would all a sudden change my fuel consumption, i havent made any mods or so, but i do put in the octane booster here and there but i have never had a problem like that on any of my vechiles!

I've noticed the biggest gains by driving conservatively. It's rough, but with a little more time on my hands I don't have to rush anywhere. Highway driving was the biggest thing. I would normally drive around 80-85, but cut it back to cruise around 75-78. Running lower RPMs means less gas consumption. My dad drove my 93 EB around and was getting 17 mpg. I was getting around 10 or so. Then I figured in my mileage on my Sport before mods and got close to 16 mpg on the highway, but I think I may be closer to 20 these days after mods and more conservative driving. Of course there are other things that may have gotten dirty or clogged over the years not just intake and exhaust.
