View Full Version : Towing 3k miles with my 97 X
gavin 02-17-2003, 02:42 PM I'm gonna be movin in about 6 months, and driving. I live in Alaska, and was planning on driving down to Colorado Springs.
I also have my Bronco2 which I plan on taking down with me, but wanted other people's opinions on the drive.
It's gonna be close to 3000 miles, and loaded with my B2 (plan on gettin a tandem axle trailer), and all sorts of other stuff I need to take down.
I will be gettin a full service before I leave (tranny flush, radiator flush, etc etc).
I know the V8 can take it.. but not sure about the truck.
Anybody have any experience towing long distances? Anything else to check before I leave or anything?
And yes.. I did search, but couldn't find anything that was much help :p
tenikiwon 02-17-2003, 03:05 PM Shouldn't be a problem, I would defidently recomend trailer brakes if you don't have 'em
I also recommend trailer brakes. I'd also get either a weight distribution hitch or an airbag helper spring system for the rear so that you can keep the vehicle and the load level.
gavin 02-17-2003, 10:34 PM I don't have a trailer yet
but I was planning on gettin the trailer brakes.
as for distribution hitch.. you mean somethin like this (http://www.hitches4less.com/weigdishitac.html) ?
With the V8 your motor and tranny will be fine. However, your rear leaf springs are probably going to be sagged by the end of the trip. I'd see about getting air adjustable shocks in the rear or this: http://www.activesuspension.com/
SplashMan 02-18-2003, 07:35 AM Or get a set of the Helwig "helper" leafs. I am running them and you can loosen them when you are nokt towing and you don't even know they are there. Before the helper spring, with nothing but stock leafs and an add-a-leaf I would drop 3" in the back when I hooked up my trailer with the B2 on it. With the helpers I only drop about 1/2" - 1". Helwig Helper Springs... (http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=193930&BQ=jcw2)

Yep, that's the right hitch. The only reasons I suggest the airbag suspension system is that it doesn't behave poorly like air shocks and that I find it helpful in windy and bad weather conditions to make the vehicle higher in the rear than normal so that the steering feels more controllable. I feel a difference in as much as a few psi. Also, the airbag is also good for heavy loads in the cargo area. Of course, I think mine cost me over $250 with the onboard compressor, but it's at least flexible on the fly unlike the Hellwig helper spring or the Roadmaster Active Suspension. Either way, you will need either the weight distribution hitch or a helper spring of sorts when pulling that trailer anytime.
gavin 02-18-2003, 08:28 PM and you can still use the helper springs/airbags/whatever with the spring under, right?

Depends on the specific product. But mostly, yes; as long as you get the right model.
SplashMan 02-18-2003, 09:11 PM I'll post some pictures of my helper spring tomarrow when it is light out, if you want...
