View Full Version : X-1 got a new suspension 6 inches worth
First off many thanks to Kodiak, Jeff Seal, and Dale Theissen for the parts I purchased from them, everything was in great condition. I have installed a six inch skyjacker class I lift up front, this also included drop swaybar brackets, and quick connects, new brake lines, and a skyjacker steering staybalizer. For the rear I went with 4 inch superlift springs, and warrior shackles, running 4 inch explorer pro comp shocks mounted to sway bar mount, this temp till I get the 6 inch shocks. Total lift was 6 inches upfront, and 6 1/2 in the rear, no driveshaft issues at all:p The camera was dead this weekend so next week I will get pics up.
Next project, 3 inch body lift to fit those 35's:D
Also thanks to Hank, all my bushing are daystar, with exception to the rear springs, they came with superlift bushings.
WOW!! Nice job X-1!!!:)
I thought you were shooting for 4".
I guess the need for 35"s took over huh? :D
Robb
I just couldn't settle for a little, I want it all:D , starting to look at the goodyear MT/R's now.
dejello 03-03-2003, 12:16 AM finish that lift! and pics pics pics!! :D
beaston1 03-04-2003, 09:06 PM this is something im REALLY looking forward to seeing..i have a white explorer almost exactly what you have.. and just want to see how it looks with 35s and what not...so... .HURRY UP I WANNA SEE SOME PICS!!
Working on it, got the pics, just got to resize them, file size too big.
jimbo74 03-05-2003, 12:05 AM 35s wont fit with a 6"? i remeber colin fendurguy running 35s before he got perry's, and that was with a 4" and trimming.... why the bl also?
Chew_12 03-05-2003, 12:06 AM Yes, I been wanting to do what you did for a LONG time, i want to see pics. How much did your back end cost you?
Got it covered, adding 3 inch body lift:p

I went with 4 inch superlift rear springs that I bought from a member here, and added warrior 153 shackles for a total of 6 1/2 inches in the rear.
just a little flex in the back yard
WannaXP8 03-05-2003, 01:47 PM umm..by the way it looks, I dont think 35s will fit on there, you will be lucky to fit 33s on there...morrisey, I wanna see pics of your truck too..
WannaXP8 03-05-2003, 01:49 PM but you still look good..and got more lift then me..lol :(
Positive Vibes 03-05-2003, 02:04 PM Little of the subject but where did you get the handles for your front disconnects?
zensius 03-05-2003, 02:04 PM 33's will fit. But for 35's you'll have to do a little trimming of the front and or rear of the wheel wells. They're not 35 inches wide!
Kodiak 03-05-2003, 02:40 PM Hey looks good. Nice to see the lift on. Glad to see you went with the 6 instead.
Those disconnects look like the ones I made for my ranger did you buy those or make them?

The quick connects I am guessing are clevis pins, I bought some sway bar parts from Theissen, and he thru those in, they work really well, and do not rattle at all. The wheels won't go on till first of april, waiting on the body lift till then, right now will fit 33's with minor trimming of the front rocker panel piece. I will get better pics later this week, I have to resize them. Spent most of the week so far adjusting the front end alignment, looks as though only have to replace 1 bushing. One good thing about going with the 4 inch springs is I can always go 8 inch coils, and do a spring over in the rear.
Ryan1 03-09-2003, 10:08 AM Looks good man. I need to hurry up and post some pics of mine for you. Mine is white also, same lift, and I just got my rock crawlers on.
If it wasnt -4 outside I'd go do it right now
Ryan
Post those pics, I really want to see yours, I had to use the rear brake line that they sent me on the front, due to the abs thing, and my rear shocks are only for a 4 inch lift, so they are mounted to the swaybar, so I still have the rear brakeline, shocks, and swaybar to install, plus tires, I want the crawlers, I think on a white ex they would look good. Maybe next month roof rack as well.
Ryan1 03-09-2003, 01:23 PM I did an soa in the rear and am still running my stock brakelines I do have the extension for the rear but havent put it in yet.
I got the rockcrawlers for 185.10 installed, at discount tire.
My rear shocks are mounted in the stock location but I have longer shocks.
If you know how to weld. M.O.R.E. offroad sells some pretty nice weld on ones.
Ryan
Ryan1 03-09-2003, 01:26 PM well I have spring break this week so I can take as many as you like.
any certian areas you want.
Also, how much do you have into your lift so far? and do you have any vibrations out of that rear drive line?
Ryan
I have about 700 in the parts, I bought alot of my parts used, with exception of shackles, staybalizer, shocks, pittman arm, and brake lines, those were bought new, using the 4 inch rear springs with shackles turned the pinion up some, so no vibrations. As for pics, any would be great.
Ryan1 03-09-2003, 02:01 PM It looks like you replaced your RA bushings while you were at it....what did you old ones look like?
Ryan
I did that last year, replaced all the bushings with daystars, didn't look to bad, just wanted to tighten it up some, did make a big difference in handling.
beaston1 03-09-2003, 09:55 PM ya... Ryan1 ...i really want to see your pics as well... you running 33's?? plus i just want to see how those black rock crawlers look on the truck.... holla back...platty plat
lonestar 03-09-2003, 10:03 PM Looks good.
Question though, if you were going 6", why didn't you go with a SOA in the rear? Also what kind of shackles give you 6 1/2" with 4" lift springs?
Ryan1 03-09-2003, 10:13 PM im runnin 32's
I have spring break this week and will take some pics tomorrow...if its about 10 degrees.
Ryan
On the rear I had already installed 4 inch springs, bought with the intention of only lifting the front 4 inches. I ended up buying a front 6 inch lift for a good price, but since I already had the 4 inch springs, I figured I would do the warrior 153 shackles and it would come out 5 1/2 in the rear, the 6 1/2 that I got in the rear was an accident, I have no idea why it came out that way, other than maybe the arch of the springs isn't allowing the shackle to lay back as far as it should. I am hoping it will settle in a little, I would prefer it level. So that is how, the why I can't explain. but it drives good
Ryan1 03-09-2003, 10:57 PM how's the flex on the rear with the springs under?
Ryan
Haven't really tried it out yet, but will have to check, we have a good concrete ramp at work, so I will try to sneak back there for a test and a pic, haha 1200 post!
Blaine122300 03-15-2003, 06:29 AM should have went with the class II lift. LOnger radius arms are awesome!! You can get some good flex.
http://www.explorerforum.com/data/showphoto.php?photo=1403&papass=&sort=1&thecat=998
I agree, the arms and brackets are 500 bucks, I am going to up grade to those later.:D
Kinda stalled out there for a while, should have the body lift within the next two weeks, or sooner I hope, then I can finally take the stock tires off.:D
XplorerKid 03-20-2003, 02:06 PM :D very nice looking !!!!
where at in florida do u live ??
i live in winter haven
PEACE
I currently live in Tennessee, looking to move back to the Tampa area, Plant city is where we have a D.C.
Just an update,
Installed a P.A. 3 inch body lift today, and have also finally put on some tires, 33x12.50x15 B.F. Goodrich allterrains. Won't actually get my wheels till next week, still running 15x7 stockers:( . But with the added lift of the body lift, it now gives me 9 inches total lift, so lift is done, finally!! Now is time for accessories, first up is a pair of smittybuilt black powdercoated nerf bar, those are for the wife, she needs help getting in, roof rack for my spare and some lights, and a winch combo, brushguard, do not want to get stuck somewhere and have no way out. This winter will be gears and lockers, looking at a detroit for the front, and a e-locker for the rear, due to ice around here in winter. With all the lift it is still legal in my state, 29 inches at the bumper, and 52 inches at the rear door handles, total heighth is a little over 7 feet tall, whoohoo!!:bounce: I will post some current pics tomarrow, it was to dark when I finished to take any.
See ya
Ryan1 03-29-2003, 10:02 PM Kick ass.....did you run into any major problems putting the body lift on??
Ryan
Not too many, here's my list.
1. front body mounts. The left one wouldn't come out, so I just cut them off with a 4 inch grinder, and used the rubber, and some body washers.
2. The bumper brackets, they definitely suck, but with some mod work they were okay, I had to notch the rear bumper under neath about a half inch to clear the frame for it to sit level, the front bumper mount had to be redrilled to sit level, and it brought the bumper forward about an inch, I may go back and rework it later.
Everything else went pretty good, it wasn't in the instructions, but I went ahead and pulled the front seats to make it easier, and had to loosen battery cables for more length. I didn't use the e-brake mount, with my lift, it wouldn,t work, and had to take the bolt out that holds it up inside the inner fender for enough length, it actually works smoother now that I did that.
When I post pics, you will probably be next in line for a body lift, it make the ex look too sweet, not too top heavy either, of course it will be alot more stable with the wider stance of the 10 inch wheels.
I'm ready to go wheeling!!
Ryan1 03-29-2003, 10:50 PM Deffinantly gonna do the body lift this summer. But my first big thing is to get a new rear axel under there with 4.10's, I will probably do that with in the next two weeks.
were you one of the ones intested in my 3.73 pig.
Ryan
Yes, :bounce: that is what I wanted, I am running 3.27's now, really need gears!!
Ryan1 03-29-2003, 11:00 PM Ya I have 3.27's also, I bought a Front pumpkin last year with 3.73's and never used it. Still in the box all packed up. Whats it worth to ya.
Ryan
Hmmm, right back at ya, what's worth to you?
Ryan1 03-29-2003, 11:04 PM well I paid 150 for it. AndI dont expect to make money off of it
Ryan
That would be fine, I would have to wait a couple of weeks, blew my budget on tires, and wheels.
Ryan1 03-29-2003, 11:51 PM that's cool take as long as you need Ive had it for a year no big hurry to get rid of it
Ryan
Cool, Ii will get with you as soon as I can, I feel comfortable gearing the rear, but I'm not so sure about the front, the whole pig will make it easier on me.
side shot, total lift 9 inches, and 33 inch tires
Black Magic 03-31-2003, 11:39 AM That looks great!
Thanks,
Still gotta get the wheels on it, and a few accessories.
David
Yomie 03-31-2003, 11:57 AM Holy shot, you need 35's, lol
Looks good, you better hurry up wearin down thoes 33's :D
Ryan1 03-31-2003, 10:04 PM Damn that looks good!!!
You are making me wanna put a body lift on real soon
Ryan
Hey what's with the colors?
Yomie, yeah gotta wear em down first, probably over winter I can get 35's, too much spent right now to switch, but who knows, things may change.
Ryan1, I knew if you saw it, you would want it, even with 33's it has a good stance, rides well too. I think once the crawlers get on there it will look better, and handle a little better.
JasonX 04-01-2003, 12:01 PM are you sure that is a 6 inch lift? it looks like my 92 when I added the 4 Inch before my 3 inch Performance Accessories Body lift. I just wanted to say that it look me an estimated 20hrs to put my body lift on. The suspension was easier. Everything was rusted on and The brackets to relocate the front and rear bumpers don't work without fabrication. It took me a full day to mount them, I had to cut a notch in the rear frame to slide the bumper into. My own blood and sweat but it looks good. If ya need help im here. good luck!!!
JasonX 04-01-2003, 12:05 PM sorry my comp at school didn't load all the post and I didn't know you already installed the three inch body lift.
Has anyone else had problems with the body lifts?
Ryan1 04-01-2003, 12:36 PM X-1, Is the ride any different know? Do you have any body vibrations?
Ryan
410Fortune 04-01-2003, 12:40 PM You may consider getting a 4"drop pitman arm to bring your steering geometry back into a decent range.
Also did you installe extended brake lines? If not keep an eye on them, the stockers may get stretched out..
with 8" coils you would be hard pressed to keep the camber in check, without taller axle pivot drop brackets, and taller axle pivot brackets = yikes!
Did you go with the extended radius arms?
Wow, lots of questions, I will try to answer a few.
1. Yes, six inch skyjacker, rear is a hybrid of 4 inch superlift springs, and warrior shackles.
2. already have the drop pittman arm, need to align, my camber bushings are off, causing too much caster, that is cause of pull.
3. Yes bumper brackets suck, will have to work a little more to get them 100% right. The only thing I don't care for on the body lift is the steering extention, puts a bind in steering, that is minor, not a big problem.
4. Did not put extended arms in, that is on my wish list though... 500 bucks for arms and brackets:eek:
5. Only vibration I have is at 75 miles an hour, bad ballance on rear tires, the guy that balanced them did a crappy job, will wait till new wheels go on, that will be soon.
Just a recap, as far as hieght it sits 7 feet 2 inches from ground to top of roof rack, this is with 33's on it, I think it looks not as tall due to the tires looking too small now, 35's are in the future, which I think will be a big improvement, with the skyjacker parts, and new rear springs she rides extremely smooth, much better than my silverado did when I lifted it, gotta go nerf bars too, my wife has to struggle to get into, now that it is all in place, I will be tightening up some aspects of it, such as bumpers, and additional paint to the frame, oh I also do have the extended brake lines in front, had to use the rear on the driverside front though, still need to order it, it is hanging loose right now, the kit they originally sent me was for non-abs, which will not work on the driver side. With minoe trimming I can easily go 37's, but that would probably be too much for bearings. I will try to post more as I think of it.
Ryan1 04-02-2003, 10:26 PM X-1, how long did it actually take you to put you body lift on?
Ryan
It took me about 6 hours, mostly just screwing around on a saturday, probably could have done it in 4. Ii still have to finish bumpers, decided to cut 1 inch of front frame, and put a little more notch on the rear bumper, then they will sit in the right position, and straight. The rear I got with in an 1/8 inch the first time, and the front is straight, but sits about a 1/4 inch forward due to the lower valance hitting the frame, if I cut an inch off, then redrill the top, or front hole, it will be perfect. So add a little more time for bumpers, and cleaning up the frame(paint), turns out to be about a day job.
Question for all the lifted first generation ex's... Does your steering feel like it has give in it, I am not sure how to explain it, but mine wants to shift when I hit dips, or bumps in the road, just alittle, but annoying. I have replaced, and tightened everything, the only thing I can think off is the drop brackets are long enough to put some leverage on the frame causing it to flex, or the 12.50 tires on 7 inch rims might be my problem, they only have 3 ply's on the sidewalls.
Ryan1 04-03-2003, 11:10 AM Do you have a steering stabalizer? Also look into the superrunner steering
Ryan
Yes, I have the skyjacker staybilizer, I thought in order to buy the super runner steering, you also had to buy the superlift lift.
Ryan1 04-03-2003, 04:23 PM No it should work with any 4 to 6 inch lift. I bought the superrunner steering kit but just havent put it on yet, due to shitty weather. I have no stabalizer or anything.
Bumpsteer is hell
Ryan
Dannyboy 04-03-2003, 04:45 PM Hmmm, another big white one. A word of advise for ya'll. I never had problems with 32's but with 35s on TTB I've broken and bent everything. EVERYTHING I MEAN. I've gone through every shaft, blew bearings, 2 drivers side spindles, even blew my entire 3rd member case to pieces when I snapped u-joint on that middle shaft. Don't get me wrong, I wheel the hell out of my truck when it leaves the pavement, so this has to be expected. Just remember 35's are terrible on a TTB.
Other than that, big white Explorers draw lots of attention.
Ryan1 04-03-2003, 04:49 PM Ive seen how you drive :D
Dannyboy, is your steering pretty tight, and what set up do you have?
Ryan1 04-05-2003, 07:14 PM Dan had all skyjacker components now, I believe, and I'm pretty sure he is running stock steering and possibly a steering stabalizer. Stock RA's too.
Ryan

Same set up that I have.
Dannyboy 04-07-2003, 12:45 PM Yes I have stock steering, stock radius arms and my steering stabilizer got sheered off on a rock (go figure)
beaston1 04-07-2003, 03:43 PM jeeze...you do wheel hard.....
X-1....when you getting the 33's put on the rock crawlers...the black will look sweet plus give youre tires a somewhat wider stance....... cant wait for more pics...keep um coming!!!
Black Magic 04-07-2003, 03:46 PM Dannyboy, that is a great looking truck and looks like fun! Makes me miss wheelin'! but I don't miss breaking things!
Crawlers are on their way, left Kentucky and are in the mail, should have them by the weekend.:bounce:
