Rear fog light? Maybe a European addition (many Euro vehicles have these)?

Have a pic of the rear fog light?

dan swedish man

 where to start?

all european cars have rear fog light?!? typically, it sits inside the normal housing (like the brake lights do) and can be switched on when foggy (so that others don't rear end you).
although, my late J33P TJ R.I.P. had an external red fog on the rear bumper.
my theory is that the import agency (european Ford?) rewired the whole lighting system to achieve rear fog and maybe skipping the whole front fog deal. the lights are still sitting on the front spoiler thingy though...

i'll probably end up getting some Hellas in those spots instead. ;)

Yeah the rear fog, alot of US VW's have this,

Have you ever seen a VW going down the road with their lights on, and from the back it looks like their drivers side taillight is brighter than the passenger side? That brighter taillight is actually the rear fog!

where are the rear fogs at? in the bumper or below the bumper or...?

Howard

Dan

If your x is like mine then the front fogs are not fogs at all but driving lights and they only come on with full beam. The rears are built into the rear bumper (see pics in my sig). Hence there is no switch they just come on when you set full beam on the multi switch.

don't mountaineers have something like that?

Is full beam the same as high beam? If so, that would be the opposite of the US version. Or is full beam the same as low beam?

Just wondering..........I enjoy the slight variations between our languages!:D

I think a lot of the Euro brands have this feature - Volvo, Saab, Audi for sure, and I think MB and BMW. My other ride is a VW Passat that doesn't have it, and I haven't seen other US VWs with it. Lots of people on VW board I frequent talk about doing that mod, as the housing is right there in the rear light.

Maybe Dan is right, they modified euro spec (or maybe just Sweden spec) vehicles with this feature. I can't imagine they would have unwired the front fogs, though. More likely they would have wired them to go on together, I'd think.

Nope!! They're only reflectors but I wanna do something like that with my EB. Get a MM rear bumper and mod it. What do you guys think??

the rear fog in my wife's audi is just part of the tail light. when turned on, the driver side tail light just gets brighter. not sure if its another bulb or the same one getting more juice. i've seen some mod it so both tail lights do this.

i think it would be kinda neat as long as it doesn't look cheesy. like the ones that are actual reflectors are ok but not those stupid tape reflectors.

hey man- i'm really glad that wasn't because of the jack johnson song (whatever it may be) that would have seemed a little off to me--- not to offend anyone who likes jack johnson

Well, I guess that question wasn't really as dumb as you thought is was. I learned 3 things from this thread.
1) Howards Explorer has driving lights, instead of fog lights.
2) You have a rear fog light.
3) There are more differences in the Euro models than I thought.

I, for one am glad you asked your "dumb" question.

I have noticed a lot of Mercedes and BMW's with the drivers side light brighter than the passengers side. Now I understand why.

Is it the same light they use as a "parking" light? I know on MBs, there is a parking position you can put the switch in that lights only one side.

...all you surfers out there know who he is, right?

anyway, it seems as if i need to examine wich lights go on at what setting and so on.
don't thing i've managed to light the front ones.... and as far as the rears go, i just assumed they came on (maybe not, huh?)
i'll dig into it when i get it back from the shop (done tt & shackles, JAY!)

Ok I understand the confusion over the language problem. Lets see if I can sort it out.

Full beam = High beam (in otherwords use when in dark road)

Low beam or dipped = Low beam (normal headlights)

Side lights = parking lights ( low wattage lamps white front red rear 6w bulbs)

In this country you have to have rear fog lights these may be a single lamp on the drivers side (21 watt) and these are worked by a seperate switch but can only come on with headlights. On my x the lights mounted below the bumper are driving lights and there is no seperate switch they just come on when you go to full beam (high beam). I attach some pics so that you can all see.
