I have a UK spec Explorer built in 1998. (I live in the UK). When I make a slow right hand turn (usually at parking speed) or complete 180 degree loop there is a groan from the steering. There is also a very mild grinding feel through the wheel. It does not occur when I turn left. Can anyone help. The Ford Dealers over here are not best educated on US vehicles.

i have a 98 sport SOHC... depending on the noise, i dont think its an engine problem. Look at the part in your sway bar where the bend is, there's probably rub marks on it. I know my right tire rubs when i make a sharp left.
You'll be able to see the marks...
Hope this helps
BTW: everything is still stock on mine except for 2" of lift and it rubs on the sway bars. Im going to get rims with 3.75" backspacing to reduce that.

You might also check you Power Stearing Fluid level. My 91 did the same thing when it was low of fluid.

Thanks, I'll check the fluid level but I think it's ok. The noise/abrasion does not occur all the time and it does not need to be on full lock to happen.

There was a recall on the power steering hoses, just not sure if the '98 was included. Think it was though. They put on larger diameter hoses if memory serves me.

Ford's power steering pumps are generally louder than most. Does it make any other noises or vibrate when your turning?

It makes no other noises. I can't figure out why it's only intermittent and not every time I make a right turn. Because I'm not alway on full lock, it can't be a wheel rubbing. Why would I have no such problem on a left turn? Maybe I'll have to live with it. Thanks anyway.

Check your tie rods to make sure they aren't the source of the problem. They might have to be replaced if they no longer have grease in them. Mine will squawk and groan in low speed turns on occasion.
Is it quiet while driving in a straight line? you might want to check your wheel bearings (if it's a 2wd) for proper adjustment. Mine would make a grinding sound/feel when I would hit the brakes every once in a while, turned out to be a slightly loose bearing on the spindle.
