View Full Version : ENGINE SWAP... HELP!! :)
X TIMB0 X 04-12-2003, 12:39 PM Hey all. I am looking to drop a newer/bigger engine into my 94 XLT, replacing the stock one. Any suggestions on what to put in? It seems the 5.0 is the way to go, so any tips on how to go about aquiring one? Thanks guys.
CoryL 04-12-2003, 03:43 PM Use the search function. It has been covered a lot.
Newbies
GaSouthern1 04-12-2003, 07:15 PM way to handle it cory:rolleyes:
welcome to the site man, dont worry there are plenty of people here that would love to steer you in the right direction. There are a few people here that have done 4.0V6 to 302 v8 swaps...RFR2212 i know has done it, give him a PM and he can help you. There is also a god bit of stuff on this site, i would just search for "motor swap" or V6 to V8.
Good Luck man
X TIMB0 X 04-13-2003, 11:33 PM Hey thanks a lot man I appreciate the help. Obviously I'm 17 and learning (thanks for support Cory), so any tips are helpful.
CoryL 04-14-2003, 07:30 AM A tip for newbies:
Read the FAQ.
Directly from it:
"Do a SEARCH on any question you have before posting a new topic. Chances are someone else has already asked the same question, and received an answer."
Nothing personal was intended. This topic has been covered a lot and a simple search would have resulted in many hours of reading pleasure.
X TIMB0 X 04-15-2003, 10:41 AM Thanks though, I was only trying to find someone who could give me tips on my individual truck, I couldn't find many 94's with the conversion already done.

91-94 Explorers are all going to be the same.
RFR2212 04-15-2003, 11:46 PM Um want my best advice? I read for about a year, and it wasn't enough.... I'm still swapping and I started my project at 19 er somethin like that and i'm 21 now... granted school got in the way... And after yer done, read for another year or so, i wish i did 10 times more research
Kris Guilbeaux 04-16-2003, 11:45 PM My advice to is dont jump in to this. I bought a 5.0 motor over a year ago. I dont think I am Ready to start this swap any time soon.
VonZipper 04-17-2003, 06:18 PM I did mine over a 2 year period. It takes quite a bit of planning, replanning, and fixing what you planned.
410Fortune 04-17-2003, 06:20 PM Kris, when do you want to drop in that 5.0??
DO IT!!!!
Kris Guilbeaux 04-18-2003, 03:17 PM I am still in the planning process. I am going to be have Brett help me with the Wiring on this. It might be a project for early 2004.
410Fortune 04-18-2003, 03:24 PM Whodo you think helps Brett? hahahaha Brett and I figured out the 4.0L wiring together, after I had built my harness for my truck wrong (it ran for over a year!, just some things wrong). So then the experience we got from doing those two helped us to build the EFI harness for Joe's 5.0L ho conversion into his 93 Ex.
the 4.0L to 5.0L is about 1000x's easier then the other conversions when it comes to wiring.
Now Brett is out there doing all sorts of EFI wiring stuff.......
You will be pleased with teh results if you enlist Brett's help for your wiring, its better then Ford could have done themselves.........there truly is only one way to do it right.........
Kris Guilbeaux 04-18-2003, 03:32 PM I figured you two worked together on the harnesses. I plan on sending him a 92 Harness some time (maybe this summer) and Have it Wired to work in my Explorer.
I just need to get the time to go and pick up that harness.

Yes, but no.... The chassis are very similar. However, there are a lot of differences between the 91-4 wiring and options. The 93-4's have a lot more stuff under the hood than the 91-2's and the layout is slightly different. ABS, EGR, O2's, cruise control, Power distribution, etc...
Wiring the 89-93 5.0 Mustang harness into the 93-4 harness is no easy task. The power distribution box of the 93-4 explorers is much more complex than the 91-2's. I've done a couple of these harnesses for the 93-4 5.0 conversion and each one has taken over 75 hours.
Timbo - talk to Rob (Gofast). He's been doing a 5.0 swap in his 94.
Kris, whenever you are ready.....
