Redrig 05-18-2003, 06:21 PM an after Redrig 05-18-2003, 06:23 PM sorry here it is Redrig 05-18-2003, 06:24 PM another Redrig 05-18-2003, 06:25 PM last one what do you think? TarHeel085 05-18-2003, 06:30 PM looks really good! what did you use and how? IAmTodd 05-18-2003, 06:50 PM Looks awsome. What did you use to get it soo smooooth? Redrig 05-18-2003, 07:28 PM i spent hours underneath. i used a putty knife to scrape the road tar (i think thats what it was) then i wire brushed most of it to bare metal and some sandpaper. then i wiped it all down real good with paint thinner. then i primered it. i went to local paint store and he recomended an acrylic paint, so i had him mix me up a couple of cans at 13bucks a can. i was really impressed with it. i did the outside frame rails to they turned out just as nice but i couldnt get a good pic to show it. here ill post it anyway. jssong 05-18-2003, 07:47 PM wow.. that is awesome.. looks brand new, did you take the diffy cover off to do that, or just do it with it on? and did you use a thin or thick brush? wide or narrow? Redrig 05-18-2003, 07:51 PM i left it on. and it was all done with spray cans. madmike 05-18-2003, 07:53 PM Looks good, and i know what you mean by a pain in the ass, i did my entire underside, but in blue. but im going to redo it in black, the upkeep is alot easier:D jssong 05-18-2003, 07:54 PM did you cover anything up? Redrig 05-18-2003, 08:02 PM i took the rear bumper off, both tires and taped the back end up. then cover the whole truck with plastic drop cloths 3 of them for 99cents each. i deleted most pics of it taped up but i scrounged this one. AlaskanJack 05-18-2003, 09:28 PM Awww Man You ruined my day!!!!!!!! I was doing the same thing today but didn't get as gfar as you did. Yours looks great. Acrylic huh! Well Mine is going to be a little different. My coils are being powder coated as we speak and I plan on doing something not seen on here yet. Unfortunately mine will be completed over the period of a week a little at a time. The crazy jeepers are really going all out for this upcoming Alaska 4x4 Meet & Greet. I've seen someguys dismantling their suspensions and getting every powder coated. Bunch of freaks. Well I didn't want to show up looking all rusty underneath so I too decided to do a little care underneath. AlaskanJack 05-18-2003, 09:29 PM Did you do anything to the front? Post a pic if you did. Redrig 05-18-2003, 09:41 PM no nothing to the front yet. maybe this week cuz im oncall and get to bring the work truck home. so i can have the x down a couple days. the paint shop suggested acrylic i dont know much about paint but it did a super job. i want to mix mine up a little instead of all black (maybe) what is powder coating, where do ya get it done. i cant way to see yours. you have me curious as what your gonna do. if anyone has any ideas here posts some pics. Hartman 05-18-2003, 09:54 PM Man it's so smooth! Good work, I'm planning a similar project soon. tomblin1 05-18-2003, 10:15 PM Sweet!! I'll have to add it to my list.. GaSouthern1 05-18-2003, 10:23 PM that looks great man, i did my whole underside with the rubberized paint and it turned out awesome, not smooth or anything, but it really does wonders for the look of the truck AlaskanJack 05-18-2003, 11:57 PM I can't get technical about powder coating cause I just don't have that kind of knowledge. It is basically a hard baked on finish. I have heard from many that they do their own powder coating in their garage with an old oven. Huge savings doing it yourself. I may talk with one guy locally that does his own powder coating so he can show me how to do it. I'll post some pics of the powder coated coils when they get done. A guy from this board that is local to me had his front bumper powder coated and it looked great in person. Redrig 05-18-2003, 11:59 PM yeah. thats sounds great id like to see pics im interested in what it looks like. IAmTodd 05-19-2003, 08:22 AM Too much work;) I'll do my 2 coats of rustolium a year. hydroxy 04-26-2004, 09:08 PM old old thread... I was wondering how it was holding up? (*cough*pictures*cough*). :D Redrig 04-26-2004, 09:12 PM Its actually holding up very well except for the the leaf springs. Its wearing off inbetween them, the frame rails and axle still looks pretty good. As soon as the weather clears ill get a pic posted of what it looks like now. birdman 04-26-2004, 11:53 PM man wow, that just looks awesome for a do-it-yourself paint job on the undercarriage. Redrig 05-01-2004, 10:20 PM Heres the pic. Its not quite as shiny anymore but like I said the frame rails and axle is holding up great. I need to recoat it and pay more attention to the leafs and shackles. |
