In '98 there is no VSS. The rear anti-lock brake sensor is used to determine vehicle speed.

What about 99s?

It applies to '98 and up.

That's odd. According to my '98 Service CD, vehicle speed is determined by the rear ABS sensor. A new tranny should not affect anything.

I guess we need more info.

Who installed the new tranny?

What tranny did they put in your Explorer? (should be a 5R55E)

Why were they unable to wire the VSS?

someone who i dont want to talk to again installed the tranny. they said they could not wire the speedo up cause they change the tranny.
its a 97 explorer with a 98 teanny in it.

thanks a lot for the photo of where it should go. I am really lost and these guys have just given the thing back to me and told me it cant be done. its going somewhere else tomorrow so they can check it out.

do you think the VSS not being hooked up would cause the car to be in the wrong gear all the time

Info as I'm finding it off my '97 CD...

Vehicle Speed Sensor

The vehicle speed sensor (VSS), mounted on the rear of the transfer case, informs the GEM of vehicle speed.

Here is what it looks like. See if you have this on your transfer case. (cannot think of any reason it won't be there) The wires coming down from the body that go to the VSS should still be there from where they unplugged them. You should be able to just plug them back in.
