Hi all. I'm new to the board. In reading other posts and replies. I'm sure that there is someone who can help me with my problem. Hopefully it is just a minor one. This is my first post. I have the 4x4 touch drive system. There are two buttons on the dash that are orange in color. The upper button is 4x4 and the lower button is 4x4 low range. When I push the 4x4 button the light doesn't come on. The same for the low range button. The amber lights to the right of the four-wheel drive and low range don't come on. There are no lights on when I push the buttons. I can't recall where all the lights are. Hope my post is not confusing. It is to me. Please ask if you have any any questions. I'm assuming the 4x4 wheel drive is not engaging. Any assistance that can be provided in helping me to correct my problem will be deeply appreciated. Thanks for any responces.
P.S. Sorry. I didn't have the year of my Explorer in signature block-1992

Hi and welcome to the site your problem probably lies in your electric shift motor on your transfer case, it may need a good cleaning, mine did this once too i beat on it with a rubber mallet and have had not problems since. Now i engage and disengage my 4x4 often to keep that motor working. good luck

Check here

And http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/images/top_search.gif around here, very common problem. It is usually a faulty shift motor and can be cleaned or rebuilt.

NO problem jungle jim, Dont beat her to much :hammer:, Check all of the connections and make sure they are ok, my guess is that your explorer hasnt seen 4 wheel drive to much, so its just lack of use, otherwise might be time for a rebuild. one thing about it, the shift motor is very accessible, so you shouldnt have to bad of a time.

I just rebuilt my tranfer case motor, which I know now to be professionally called a transfer case shift actuator motor, or I like to call it "A very plausible class action law suit." Heh. Any ways, the first time might take two hours, but I would imagine subsequent rebuild would take less than 45 minutes.
BIG HELP TIP: Use PB Blaster on every bolt on the motor prior to trying to pull it off. I hosed the bolts down two days in advance, twice on the second day. Those bolts came out like they had just been put in there a day ago.
Good Luck

remember when you take it apart to clean, and your putting it back together, to use a something called "create a gasket" from autozone, or something similar. its about 3 bucks, and you get a lot. its a black tar stuff. the create a gasket stuff is important. ill tell you why later. anyway, when your putting your shift motor back together, use the create a gasket to seal any parts that have two surfaces that will be touching. like a normal gasket would do. i suggest this because after rebuilding my shift motor, i didnt seal it. the 4x4 worked for 4 days, until it rained, and water got into the motor. hense the 2nd rebuild i had to do. anyway, keep that in mind. welcome to the board.
