View Full Version : should my insurence be 1026 every 6 months?
NICE59FORDF100 06-17-2003, 08:19 PM hello. I have a 92 ford explorer eddie bauer, and it has 133000 miles. im also 16. now, i know insurence is high for a 16 year old, but i have a friend, same age as me, who has a 1993 chevy 1500 extended cab with the v-8 that was offered, what ever it is. and his insurence is 420 every 6 months. we even have the same insurence company. if my insurence should be that much, i dont know if i want to keep driving my baby. tell me all your thoughts on this.
To be honest with ya, yours is TOO high and his is TOO low. Have you tried just sitting down with your insurance agent and asking him? Your 11 year old explorer shouldn't be causing high rates.
Easter 06-17-2003, 08:27 PM It sounds a little high.. if it's liability only, otherwise it's not that bad.
You do have to remember that with liability only, your rate is pretty much determined by three things, your age, your driving record, and how much damage you can do with what you drive.. it doesn't have a whole lot to do with how old your car is or what it's worth.. for example, if you drove an econobox your insurance would be MUCH less, but still not "cheap". I remember paying about $80 a month when I was 17 and driving my dodge omni (crackerbox).
Now, comprehensive coverage on my X is cheaper than that.. hehe.. it's something rediculous like $378 for 6 months, but my husband's '01 chevy truck is somehting like $1100.. it's obscene, but I get the benefit of being female, over 21, married, and a spotless driving record, he still has being male and a few speeding tickets against him. His rate should drop by half in another two years when he's 25.
NICE59FORDF100 06-17-2003, 08:45 PM that, and i dont have any bad spots on my record. knock on wood. im on my parents plan, and we have three cars total. plus, im also shared on my sisters plan, seeing im contining her bank payments, and it is still in her name. i have two payments left. yay. i have a good student discount, and a fam vehicle tag. i think we are goin to go in and talk to the insurence agent tomorrow. anyway, thanks for all ya'lls input.
X~FACTOR 06-17-2003, 09:03 PM It's weird how Insurance companies get their rates. Did you know that a Red vehicle cost more to insure than a Brown vehicle? Try shopping around for the best rates. I read somewhere that this is the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to Insuring their vehicles.
AlaskanJack 06-17-2003, 09:06 PM An SUV costs more to insure than a pickup truck with a bed. Just FYI
NICE59FORDF100 06-17-2003, 09:13 PM yep. a chevy truck, the most popular trucks that most teenagers hop and trick out. you'd think the chevy truck, with a 5.8 liter V-8 would be higher than mine. hmm...something to think about, hog tie all insurence agents...hmm, that would rasie life insurence then....
snocross1985 06-17-2003, 09:22 PM I am 17, had one ticket and am paying around $1000 A YEAR on my 1994 Green XLT (also has an alarm system and LoJack)
NICE59FORDF100 06-17-2003, 09:24 PM i wonder if i can get a better deal through progressive....thay all drive explorers.
snocross1985 06-17-2003, 09:28 PM Mines through Liberty Mutual and like I said, Mines only about $1000 a year compared to your over $2000 a year.
NICE59FORDF100 06-17-2003, 09:34 PM i wonder if i can print this post out, and take it into the insurence company and show them....just a thought
jimbo74 06-17-2003, 09:49 PM i shopped around.. and ultimately ended up with progressive.... well some little specialty thing they own or something, but still progressive..... theirs was cheaper.... i have my truck and also my moms now insured on me, for liabilty only, multiple vehicle and a horrid record, sr-22 filing and my insurance is now $2450 a year!
Klowns 06-17-2003, 09:52 PM 1026 every 6 months, i'll take what you got. I'm paying 300+ every month, and I'm 20, haven't had any tickets for over 2 years, blah blah, good student discount, and if I hit someone I still arne't covered, dunno if i'm covered for theft either. I'm gettin pissed off, I'm having my dad try and figure out why its so much.
It would only cost me $300 a month to be fully covered on my room mates 99 saleen mustang. Go figure, it would cost more than that, to be semi covered in an explorer, lol.
Sounds to high to me.
Just to give you an example, Im 25 and in NJ and I pay $1000 per year for full coverage!
I go thru Allstate btw.
EliteConcept 06-17-2003, 10:26 PM you friend may also be insured under his parents name on that chevy pickup as a driver not the primary driver.
Keep that in mind.
I am 20 and i'm paying about $1550 a year for Full coverage, but see my dad is listed as the primary driver on my explorer and i'm listed as the primary driver on his 91 chevy pickup....but since we are all on the same policy we can drive each others cars and still be covered....sort of a loop hole in the system...as long as everyone is covered on a car its all good
'96explorereddiebauer 06-17-2003, 10:28 PM When I was 16, I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9Limited. My insurance was $1,240 every 6 months. So don't feel bad. But once I turned 18 and got my third car (Explorer), my insurance dropped to a whopping $200 every 6 months. It's awesome!! I love my insurance company!! BTW, I have Allstate.
Dan Whitaker 06-18-2003, 12:04 AM You didn't mention if his Chevy was two wheel or four wheel drive. If it is only two wheel drive it will be cheaper BUT not by that much.

Interesting. Is it because of the added cost? I thought that a 4x4 would be safer to drive?
As far as insurance rates, it varies SOOOO much depending on age, record, location, car, blah, blah. One thing that insurance companies do (in NY anyway) is they'll put the highest-risk driver on the most expensive car in the house. Their phillosiphy is that you could perhaps drive that car (they just do it for more money).
Another thing about NY is they offer a defensive driving course that takes 10% off of your comprehensive. 6 hours but worth the $50 or what ever it is.
Dan Whitaker 06-20-2003, 07:36 AM The insurance companies think if you have a four wheel drive that you are going to go off road quite a bit and are more likely to dammage the vehicle or injur you or someone else.
Marchand 06-20-2003, 08:57 AM You guys suck...I should be the one complaining here. The cheapest plan I could find with full coverage is $1928/6 months! I'm 20 years old and have a clean record. I drive a 1999 Ford Explorer, their excuse was because I'm young and driving an SUV
terdrocket 06-20-2003, 09:03 AM when you are grouped in on a family plan, they factor in the worst case situation - the most expensive driver driving the most expensive car. so it depends on what other cars the family has. if your mom and dad have escorts and you have an explorer its much cheaper than if they both drive vipers and you the explorer
bonnich 06-20-2003, 09:40 AM I'm 19, been in 3 wrecks (the other cars where totald) and now I'm driving a 03 Ram QC 4x4 with a 5.7L i pay $250 canadian with the 30% increase this year. $250 cdn is what like $175 usd? a month.
andruxa 06-20-2003, 10:19 AM That sounds reasonable for Canada! Try Alberta: 1 accident, 3 tickets (minor - speeding, red light) and being 21 you get $5500 CND... Hell, 2052 US is nothing per year!
udmsvt 06-20-2003, 10:46 AM ok, here's my 2 cents
in michigan, when i was 16-17, i had a plymouth sundance on my parents plan with just liability and i was the primary driver. i paid 318 per 6 mos, and my agent said that would be the price no matter what i drove because it really didnt matter without colission coverage.
after one speeding ticket, i lost the 10% good driver disc, and it went up another 30%.
i had been paying about 700 every 6 for my 97 ford contour, red, sport WITH colission on my paretnts plan but the way we had to do it is put me as primary on another car and i paid the diff, plus i paid for my car. it was cheaper than just having me be primary on my own, but i was still covered.
after another tick (now 5 pts total) and an accident, they threatened to cancel the entire policy so i traded in the car for the ex.
now, everything is in my name and progressive with just liability was the best i could get at 790/6, but if i pay it all at once its 680/6.
i no longer have any discounts on my plan, not even good student, but i am 19. your ins will drop when you turn 19, again at 21, then the biggest at 25.
if you are still making payments on the vehicle, then most likely you have full coverage and that is a pretty good price....i know in michigan, if there is any lien on the vehicle, it has to have full coverage. once you pay it off, dump the full coverage. my girlfriends dad pays like 1500/6 for her 91 ex with fuyll coverage and she has no tix but 3 accidents....he just refuses to drop the ins down.
Black Magic 06-20-2003, 10:48 AM I can't wait to turn 25 in July. My insurance will drop in half! :bounce:
TravisC 06-20-2003, 10:50 AM I'm 22, with a perfect record (knock on wood) and I pay $50/month. :D But that's only cause I'm on my parents insurance plan. But when I move out in a couple months it jumps to $185/month. That for a 92 Sport 5-spd w/135,000 miles.
AlaskanJack 06-20-2003, 01:30 PM Ah well I was pissed when I moved from Oregon to Alaska and bought 2 Explorers both 4x4 and my Insurance Doubled. When I asked why since I had been a customer for over 10 yrs and had Auto,Home, renters, basically all sorts of insurance with them and not a single claim. I was told that Alaska was just a higher rated area. I sad screw you and went online and got insurance with Geico for half of what they were telling me and the same coverage to the penny.
I pay $85 a month for 4 months, get two months off then start again.
I wrote a nice little letter to the Safeco Agent here in Anchorage and then cc: it to my old agent and to Safeco's home office. I tried to stay with my old agent but the company doesn't allow it. The new agent could have gone lower in the rates but since I was new to him he stuck me with a high payment. My old agent was a family friend and she checked and rates should have only changed by maybe 18 dollars for the Explorers.
A few months after I sent my letter off I got a call from the Safeco Agent locally offering to match the Geico premiums to come back. He said you're a valuable customer and I might be losing money on this but I want to make things right with you. I never mentioned to him that I had received a letter from the Regional Advisor for Safeco apologizing for the poor service and quoting me a rate about $20 less than my current Geico premium and throwing in road side service. None of which the local agent was offering.
I told the local agent that if he wanted my business he would have to do better than Geico. He put me on hold and came back. "I can do it for $10 less than Geico!"
My response was, "KISS MY A$$, DON"T CALL ME AGAIN!" What a worm! I followed our conversation with a fax of the letter from the Safeco Regional agent and highlighted the amounts and the cc: at the bottom showing that he got a copy. I wrote in big letters on the fax "YOU'RE A WEASEL!"
TravisC 06-20-2003, 01:38 PM HAHA, that's a good one. Looks like you got a good deal though.
My X cost £600.00($900.00) a year
That is claim free for 12 years( I'm 35)
A 17 Year old who works for me pays £1400($2000) a year for a 1.1L ford fiesta he would not get insurance in a X
So yours sounds like a great deal to me
seanthenerd 06-20-2003, 04:08 PM Wow Marchland you are getting ripped off!!!! I have a 97 sport fully insured for $790/6mo. and thats in Michigan where auto Insurance is very high (Thanks Detroit).
udmsvt 06-20-2003, 11:11 PM yeah, but how old are you?
Ender_Wig 06-21-2003, 12:17 AM I am 26 yo in virginia and have full coverage on my 01 sport with state farm and pay 426/6mo. Although it did recently go up about 30 every 6 months (was 390 or so) because the insurance company thinks that the DC area is more dangerous that it used to be....
Oh yeah, only accident was when I was 16, and only speedind ticket was christmas eve '95
97BlackX5.0 06-21-2003, 03:03 AM Okay I lived in ohio and was listed under a family policy with no tickets no claims no nothing and was driving a 89 Bronco II eddie bauer it was 474 a month for liability only.for a 15 1/2-18 year old driver.. now i lived in a small city ... when i moved to the upper peninsula in the middle of nowhere and kept the same insurance company just changed states.... it went to 282 18-19 years old... now even though michigan insurance is much higher than ohio's because of being no fault.. it still got cut almost in half because of the region.... ie BFE..... well i passed on the bronco to my brother and bought a 97 XLT 302 AWD with everything ... went to my agent and asked for full coverage... i wasnt expecting to actually be able to get it for less than 2000 for 6 months.... well im still covered to this day for full coverage im 20 years old with one minor speeding ticket (5 over) under my family policy for 890/6 months including towing coverage... ive hit 6 deer in the past year... 3 with the ex at the same time and had one claim for about 2500 dollars... but that cant raise my premium because its under comp....and i get a nice shiny new coat of paint every time bambi runs in front of me.... :)

Did I read that right you were paying almost $500 a month for insurance on a 10+ year old vehicle?
Shurup 06-21-2003, 12:16 PM - Albarta Canada
- 25+ years
- 91 XL
- no tickets
- no accidents
- about $ 1100 a year (would be less if I didn't pay it monthly)
- my plan is one way insur + insur against thieft and vandalism + if I loose comtrol and crash my truck into tree or pool or something (not into other car) my truck would be repaired. So it is almost two way insurance.
- I am on the same plan with my girlfriend (28 years) who drives 2001 FORD Focus (full coverage). She has been in the accident - not her fault but the gay.. I mean guy who hit her told his insurance that she hit him. No whitnesses but the damage on cars clearly shows that his story doesn't make ANY sence. We hired a lawer and hopefully he will prove that guy's story is bull $1t and her and mine insurance will drop back down.

You gotta be 25 and married to get your rates down.

He may have more driving experience and he may have taken driving school which gives something like 3 years experience so that may be the reason.

That's definitely not it, we attened the same driving class together, the defensive and the other class what ever it is. I guess I'll never know :)
holze4u 06-23-2003, 12:44 AM I got one speeding ticket 2 years ago: 20 over, liscense suspension(which is so bogus). My insurance now is a whopping $178.86 a month for full coverage: just got the bill today. Yup that much for one ticket. I guess they figure that the 16-24 range of males are more high risk cuz were more agressive then most other drivers, specially old people and women:D By the way, i was driving my moms minivan(96 dodge), and was goin 80 at 12:30 at night with no one on the road cept for some hot shot cop. Yeah anyways, gettin caught speeding in a minivan is not even close to be worth it, maybe in a 'vette, but not a minivan.
udmsvt 06-23-2003, 12:54 AM consider yourself lucky. as posted, some of us pay about that without having full coverage. if i wreck my truck, i am screwed and yet i pay almost 800/6.
gavin 06-23-2003, 06:06 AM clean record, defensive driving class, good student discount.. it was still around $1200/6 mos for liability only on my Bronco2.
Switched to Allstate (or was it StateFarm?) and it went down to around $1000/6 mos for liability.
Now I have my Explorer, using Safe Co, and it's around $900/6 mos for full coverage.
Go figure?
