Howdy all -
This is a follow up to a previous thread.
O/D light is flashing, the plug-in code reader at Autozone flashed 6-4-6 which signaled a 2nd gear prob.

95 - 2 wd, 4.0 OHC w/ 212,000 mi.

Still drives. Changed fluid & filter & reset code (a couple times) Will not shift into 2nd or seems to only slip when gear lever is in the 2 position (after shifting outta 1st). Can still drive w/ the ex shifting from 1st to 3rd.

There were no metel shavings in the old fluid. Reverse seems fine.

Question - Do I drop the driveshaft in order to remove the tail housing to clean the governor? This seems to be the one thing I can try before taking it to the shop$$$$.
I don't have a manual.
Thanks for any help.

I don't even think the 95 has a speed governor. They went electronic that year. Only thing you can do is remove the intermediate servo piston, second from the engine. If the band breaks, the piston often has big chunks missing when it bottoms out on the uneven surface. That will only confirm what you already know. Sorry, it has to come out.

Fyi the governor on the 95's is set at 105mph. Sounds to me like its time for the tranny to come out and get a rebuild. Are you still running the original tranny? If you are 212,000 miles is amazing for that tranny.

I frequently see explorers that have in excess of 200K miles on the original tranny.

The speed governor they are talking about is located inside the tranny and is there to regulate a speed within the tranny, not the actual vehicle speed which is limited by the PCM (computer).

She's back.....you were right Oprahouse - the intermediate band snapped.
Had to rebuild - hope it lasts awhile!
Thanks again for all that helped me get through this problem. Ball joints are next!
