View Full Version : Is there a difference between 98 and 99 frames?

Ok, I want to get a Manik Brushguard. The style I want with the angled front uprights (---\--/---) is only available for 99-01. The one for my year has straight uprights. I really want the angled Manik guard though. I know the bumpers are different for 95-98's and the 99-01's, but isnt the frame still the same? Does the bumper hang down lower on the 99's? I think I could make a 99-01 fit on mine if the frame is the same. Input on if this is possible would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

Bump.... Anyone?

The frames are the same, only the bumpers are differant. You can mount a 99-01 bumper on a 98, but you have to use all the 99-01 bracketry.

Ray~ Will the bracketry from the 99-01 fit on my 97? Also, how do you think the Brushguard would look? I think that it would be the same, just the uprights are diff. What do you think? I dont think the bumper will give me that much of a problem.

Yes I think it does hang down lower. If you want me to measure from the grill down to the bottom of the grill guard or anything, let me know soon cause I am taking my ploder to NC tomorrow ;)

Well, I dont have the gg yet. Do you think it would turn out alright if I do what I'm talking about? Do you think the gg for the different years are different sizes?

MattStarr
07-16-2003, 10:40 PM
Does this seem like it would work. I think it would. I think all I would have to do is cut the lower valence a little more. Or maybe b/c the bumper hangs down lower, I would have to cut anything at all.

Can you post a picture of the GG you want, eventhough it's on a 99-01, then we can probably tell you what needs to be done inorder to get it to work for you.
I just want to see where the lower mounting pieces go.

Look at "explorerchic", she has the one I want. hers is a 99 sport..... Digger196 has the i DONT want, he has the straight front uprights. And I want the the angled ones like explorerchic's....(actually, she sold it, but she still has pics on her links.)

MattStarr

Bump... Any more info guys?

since we are on this topic...i have a 98...and recently i put on a bumper off of a 99 cuz i liked the chrome sides around the fog lights...i know that i would probaly end up having to get a brush guard for 99-01...but would i need the brackets for a 98???

MattStarr

Bump... again

07-17-2003, 09:08 PM
OK. 98-01.....same frame.....any questions? 98,99,01 is interchangable. I have swapped on all 3 yrs. Use common sense...if you change something, use the bracketry from that item to transfer it.

MattStarr
07-17-2003, 09:10 PM
So does that mean a brushguard for a 95-98 would fit.... I guess so... But how do you think think the Manik brushguard for the 99-01 would "matchup" on my 97. I just want it to look good.

I thought you said 98-01?
No, it won't fit on a 97 straight from the 99....you'll have to change some bracketry.

MattStarr
07-17-2003, 09:13 PM
The bumpers for 95-98 are the same, and 99-01 are diff..... How might the bracketry need to be altered if the frame is the same?

MattStarr
07-17-2003, 09:14 PM
Hokiebert~ do you think i could make that grille gaurd for the 99-01 work on my 97?

Hokie
07-17-2003, 09:14 PM
B/c the brackets have to allow the bumper to clear the bumper. i dunno?

2001ExpSport
07-17-2003, 09:14 PM
The only difference is the stud location on the mounting ears...that's it. Same configuration....just a few cm difference.

MattStarr
07-17-2003, 09:15 PM
Well, do you know what the difference is? And is it something that would be difficult to deal with?

Hokie
07-17-2003, 09:16 PM
then how do the PA883 bumper brackets work for all 95+ X's? if the horns are different?

2001ExpSport
07-17-2003, 09:17 PM
PA883?

MattStarr
07-17-2003, 09:17 PM
Hokie~ i think that might help. I might not have to"notch" the lower airdam if it hangs down lower

Ok, I see what you are getting at. Sorry, the bumpers are different...the frames the same. You may have to cut out for access if the design changes imterfere with the mounting of the brush guard.

883 only fits 95-01 2nd gen, not 3rd gen sports and to be honest, they don't really work all that well.

2001ExpSport
07-17-2003, 09:23 PM
BTW, the GG will fit 95-01 2nd gen, just the brackets change

I was just asking b/c he has a '97 My brushguard has nothing to do with the bumper when it comes to mounting. It mounts to the frame and to a frame horn bolt, but it just wraps around the bumper in the front

I like how we're basically chatting here ;)

MattStarr
07-17-2003, 09:24 PM
Ok, if the brackets change, and i order the gg for the 99-01, how do i make it fit on my 97?

you try those brackets and then if they don't work, get other brackets... hang on.. lemme crawl under my truck with a digi cam... back in 3 min

MattStarr
07-17-2003, 09:28 PM
The brackets come with the gg.... How would I order different brackets?

Basically.... I need the Brushguard for the 99-01, and the brackets for the 95-98... and its should work, right?

So, another ?.... Will the brackets fit the gg? Or are all the grille guards pretty much the same

I see the brackets, but im confused, I have nothing to compare them to. What am I looking for?

Hokie
07-17-2003, 09:38 PM
You're looking where they mount...

Hokie
07-17-2003, 09:39 PM
Ok, if the frame is the same, and the horns are the same.. then maybe the brackets will swap.. b/c as you can see, the lower brackets are mounted to the frame and to the back of the horn... not to the bumper

MattStarr
07-17-2003, 09:40 PM
I am really confuses.. I have a few holes in my frame in the same spots, but I have no way of telling if they are the same or not

MattStarr
07-17-2003, 09:41 PM
I know the Manik ONLY mounts to the frame.... so i guess its the same...

just for fun, heres mine: http://www.explorerforum.com/data/2/6434mvc-041f.jpg http://www.explorerforum.com/data/2/6434mvc-040f.jpg http://www.explorerforum.com/data/2/6434mvc-042f.jpg the bolt that physically goes into the frame i had to drill a hole for.

Bump

2001ExpSport
07-18-2003, 06:41 PM
From what I see, they will swap. Worst case senario, you have to drill a hole or two. THe main mount will bolt to the frame and come under the bumper. The secondary mounts will pass between the bumper and the grill or attach directly to the bumper.

You've made quite a mountain for yourself. Get the GG, it'll work. If you're mechanically inclined, you'll be able to work around any minor probs. It's not like your buying a GG for a hummer and trying to fit it on you X.

Premier
07-18-2003, 06:51 PM
OMG. Thx for the idea. I like how the Humvee GG goes up on the hood. Would make the X look mean. That is if it will fit...

MattStarr
07-18-2003, 10:38 PM
Mechanically inclined? I mean, I can run a drill and turn a wrench, but ive never done any frame work like drilling in metal. How much do you think a shop would charge to put it on?

MattStarr
07-19-2003, 12:42 PM
Also, what do you mean by "secondary mounts"? I thought it mounted directly to the frame?

MattStarr

Bump... any more answers to my questions?

BIG COUNTRY

ok...so since i have a 98 X with a 99 bumper....the ones with chrome sides that surround the fog lights...
then i should get a grill guard that fits 99-01?
what years do each brand give?
i hear that there are 98-01....99-01, which one is it???
manik is supported by the frame?
then what are the other ones supported by?
hokiebert: which one is yours???
cuz in this thread, all of you are saying that all the frames from 95-01 are the same, right? so if i get manik...i should get a 99-01 cuz since the frame would match it should fit and also wrap around my bumper perfectly since i got a 99 bumper...

brands and year matches
I.E. WAAG: 98-01 <--- I think
WESTIN: ???
MANIK: ???
RHINO: ???
what ever is left...

Hey Matt,

don't know if you got your brush guard or not yet, but I saw a nice black '98 XLT at the Virginia Beach public parking on saturday that had one of the bent center brushguards like my manik and like the one you got. Looked like he removed the lower shroud from the bumper. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you shouldn't have a problem getting this to work.

Oh, and it was the 25th street parking lot ~ if it was someone on the board, get some stickers on your truck, it was looking good! ;)
