Hi guys..
I'm new to this forum. Also.. I just bought my first truck which is 98 Eplorer XLT. I'm planning to put 20" on my X. Right now the truck has stock 15" on it. Do I have to do any mod or other stuff before I could put on that 20" or I just put it on and that's it? Once again.. I never owned SUV/Truck before so I'm sorry if my question is kind of unknowledgable. Thanks for the responds thou..!!
Sonny :)

Well, first off, welcome to the site. Glad your finding your way around. As far as your question goes, there shouldnt be any need for mods to use 20s... you may want to drop your ride a bit, and you can do that with a TT (torsion twist) and lowering blocks... This is my simple answer to your question, however for more details, wait a little longer for someone who knows more than me haha.

No mods are needed. But Lowering it a little really helps the look!

Thanks Matt... Now since you brought it up... What is the most safest, economic and eaziest way to lower the X? What stuff will be needed? Would it be doable for person like who absolutly have no knowledge about truck/SUV? I saw yours and Hartman and they're look really nice lowered. Ideas? ;)

Hey m435tro, welcome to the site! Do a search on Tortion Twist under the sports truck/lowered suspension section and all your questions will be answered. Do a little reading here and there and you will be well informed in no time. :)

I was gonna get this item on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2427263598

but didn't meet the reserve price. But anyway, the seller just sent me an e-mail saying:

"The tires that are on the rims are too big for your truck the fronts will rub when you turn"

So if I wanna go with 20" I should go with low profile tires say.. 275/45/20?

How about 19x8.5 rims with 245/45's on it.. The bolt pattern is 5x4.75 but it come along with 5x4.5 wheel adapters which is X's size.. Should I get this one instead? Is it safe using that adapters?

Yea, those wouldn't have been good. You need a bolt pattern of 4.5 x 5. The most poplular tire size for an Explorer on a 20 are 275/45/20. Goodyear makes them and pretty cheep too.

Adapters are up to you. Some people use them, no problems. Others say stay away. I have no experience with them. So I am not sure.

As for lowering. ExplorerExpress.com makes a kit that comes with Everything, you need and Detailed instructions. Shocks, Ubolts, blocks, camber adjusters and directions. That is the safist way to lower it.

Your is 20" right Matt? Could tell me why don't you go with chrome?

Bolt pattern is 5x4.5 btw. You would have major rubbing issues with those tires too.

Do you think if you go to a size taller tire, say, 275/50-20, it would fix the rubbing?

I am much too white for Chrome! :D

Seriously, I an not a big fan of chrome. Plus it does not fit the look of my truck. I wanted the silver/satan look. It is more sporty looking than chrome.

No Bling Bling for me. :p

Don't get me wrong there are some Chrome rims on some trucks that look good. But for me I didn't what them.

Hey guys...
Which one do you think I should get for my X?

1) 20"Chrome with 275/45/20 for $1,200.00

or

2) 18" Chrome with 265/60/18 for $1,000.00

or

2) 17" Saleen Replica with 255/45/17 for $700.00

My concern is the tire size. I just want to make sure that if I get either one of these, the tires won't rub. So I don't really care with the rims size. Suggestion guys...? ;)

Oh btw, it's 1998 XLT/4dr/4x4/Black

ps. Matt... If I take either one of those rims.. I still need to get that Lowering Kit from expressexplorer.com right?

Hey m435tro, do you have a picture of this and where did you get that price from? Thanks.

if you want the 17" Saleen repli's.... plan on buying new tires at the same time. the 255/45/17's are WAY too short to run on your explorer. either a 255/60/17 or a 275/55/17 will be the same height as stock.

m435tro
08-13-2003, 08:57 AM
What about the other two? The tire size is good?

james t

275/45/20 is just about what everyone runs on an explorer. they fit fine.

a 265/60/18 will be a tad tall, but will proly fit ok.

personally, id go ahead and get the 20's.

Hey James...
Did you run 20" on your X? Is it lowered? I went to you pics gallery and it look lowered to me.

Ok guys... I think for now I'm gonna go with 18"s due to my lack of Benjamin. Anyway.. before I go ahead and get it.. once again I need you guys opinion that know this stuff better than me.. ;)

Should I go with:

18" with 255-55r-18

or

18" with 265-60-18

Oh by the way... my X is still stock. But as Matt aka BlackMagic suggested.. I probably gonna drop it with the kit from ExplorerExpress.:D

Opinions....?? :p

Thanks, Sonny

go with whatever tire you want. a 255/55/18 will be 29.0" tall, which is about stock height. a 265/60/18 will be 30.5" tall, which is rather big for my tastes. either will fit fine...... its just a matter of personal preference.
