View Full Version : Sport trac
DaHeinah 08-15-2003, 10:08 AM Now I know that some people don't like the looks of the sport trac, but I personally think it's pretty cool so I was wondering if anybody who has driven or has been driven in a sport trac could tell me their impressions. I'm thinking about selling my X and eventually getting one of these when they lower in price. Are they cramped? Are they sluggish or peppy? How is the over all quality?
Thanks all!
Greg
John_Rock 08-15-2003, 11:12 AM If only my Sport Trac had a v8!
Well, I've always been satisfied with the power of the v6 SOHC engine. And that's with running 35" tires.
But, after my recent purchase of a 2000 Explorer Limited with the 5.0L v8. Damn, I wish I had that engine in the Sport Trac. If I ever wreck the Limited and the drivetrain survives, that v8 is going in my Sport Trac.
A lot of people that have ridin in my Sport Trac have ooooh'd and ahhhhh'd about the comfort of the seats. Especially the guys with the older Explorers. BTW, I have the leather seats.
My Sport Trac has had very little problems. Even though it has had a rough idle from day one, it doesn't bother me. It still starts like a champ after 71K miles.
There's always someone out there that has problems with theirs. Those problematic vehicles were put together the day the Hawaiian Tropic Bikini models toured the assembly plant. :D
I love this site and is the only one that I have donated money too. But, another good source for Sport Trac specific stuff is www.mysporttrac.com. The forum/message board software isn't as feature rich as this one, but there's lots of good people with experience and advice over there with specific Sport Trac issues.
John_Rock 08-15-2003, 11:17 AM Oh, if you plan on offroading in a Sport Trac, you will learn that the longer wheelbase can be a real PITA. At least until you get some major air between the frame and the ground.
DaHeinah 08-15-2003, 12:02 PM I was going to comment on those seats, they look ultra comfy! I just absolutely love the curves of that truck, is it at all cramped in the back? Thanks for the site, it's definitely going in the favorites!:D
How smooth is the ride? Does it have the typical X shudder or is it smooth as a baby's behind? Also, with the longer wheel base, I would suspect that it has a larger turning diameter, is it noticeable?
Thanks!!!

I would say, it's not cramped in the back. I would bet it has the most room in it's class.
I can't say that I've ridin in a lot of 4dr X's. But, the few I have been in, the Sport Trac seems to be smoother than a Reg 4dr X. My X Limited is has quite a stiff ride compared to the Sport Trac, but the Limited also has rear air shocks.
Um yeah, my Sport Trac has always had a shudder at 80mph. It never bothered me as I never tended to drive over 80 much.
I've read about people complaining about the large turning radius, but it never bothered me. It's not a small car or jeep. Anyway, after getting 35" tires, it really never bothered me as I can easily run over things.
The only thing that has been bothersome is storage space. Get a hard tonneau cover if you plan on having large things in the Sport Trac that you don't want in the back seat area.
If it doesn't have one, get the rubber mat for the bed. Otherwise anything you put in the bed will slide like crazy.
TravisC 08-15-2003, 12:33 PM My dad has one and I love it!! The ride is awesome and it's very comfortable. I can't tell a difference between the space in it and the space in the 4 door Explorers. I like the versitility of it. My dad has the hard cover and locks and opens from both ends along with the bed extender. I want one and if I can afford it, I'm going to buy it in a couple years when he gets a new company vehicle!
DaHeinah 08-15-2003, 08:38 PM Sweet!! Thanks for the detailed descriptions guys, you have all definitely sold me. Sounds like a great truck, versatility combined with excellent style just can't be beat.
Thanks
Greg
Funmobile 08-15-2003, 08:52 PM DaHeinah,
I love mine. I always wanted an Explorer but also needed a bed to haul junk with. When the Sport Trac came out I sold my Ranger and bought this.
The interior room should be exactly like the X since that is the Base Platform. Anything that has been known to happen on the X also happens on the ST. Mine has not had many problems like Johnstone remarked about his, although I fixed my rough Idle:) I had the oppertunity to Johnstone's in person and his awesome. For him to say that he's satisfied with the power is good since he has to turn some Monster tires.
To me it is more versitle than the X. I can take my co-workers to lunch and still carry the lawnmower in the back.
DaHeinah 08-16-2003, 11:17 PM Funmobile-
That's precisely what I was wondering about also. I guess I have always assumed PUs have less living room, but the ST caught my curiosity with that large cabin. Now all I have to do is wait until it's affordable. :D
Thanks!
Greg
