View Full Version : Alignment?

I changed my spindle and both wheel bearings on the drivers side.

I took my car to a shop to get the front end aligned.

The guy at the shop called me and said that my wheel bearings are bad on both sides and they can't align it until they fix that.

I told them that I just replaced the wheel bearings less than 20 miles ago. No response.

I told them to take it down off the rack and I will pick it up after work.

He said that who ever put them on must have done it wrong...

I said, just take it down and I will get it after work.

Comments please......

Maybe he is just sees motion in the wheel and is blaming it on the wheel bearings. It may be the ball joints. If he can't tell the difference you need to find a diff shop. Tell him he is wrong.

Or you did it wrong :p

Did you torque everything, locknut and locking pin. I'm not doubting you, but we do forget sometimes, I almost forgot to torque my spindle before I put the bearings and rotor on.

Yup. I made sure it was right. 140,000 miles and about 8 sets of wheel bearings. I think I got it down...

When you go back, ask him to show you. If he's right and somehow yours are loose tell him he should've checked the torque rather than assuming they are bad. If he's wrong tell him his an idiot (or if you're not like that tell him he should've known the difference). Either way, take your truck and leave.

Please describe, in detail, the procedure you used to adjust the endplay in the bearings.
Assuming you pressed new cups in, did you also feeler gauge them?
What you have told me isn't much to go on but if I had to give an opion I'd say the endplay in the front wheel bearings was excessive when the mechanic checked them.
The mechanic could have assumed the bearings were orginally installed properly and the increased endplay the result of wear.
You're having to install eight sets of wheel bearings in 140,000 miles doesn't give me a lot of confidence in the procedure you use.

8 sets of wheel bearings in 140K is excesive. Are you 100% sure you are doing everything correctly? My X has 197K on it and I still have the origional wheel beaings.

The mechanic may be right, they may verry well be bad. As stated 8 sets in 140 K is insane. Being a mechanic I can tell you they would not lie about thinking the bearings were bad. NO ONE likes pulling them and re packing them. Did you put new seals in with them? Something is amiss
