View Full Version : My weekend project..
tdavis 09-11-2003, 09:37 PM So I don't like the stock seats in my zuk - and I had a bolt pull out of the drivers side.
My replacments (old on left, new on right):
http://www.explorerforum.com/tdavis/zuk/seats.jpg
Got to make a new cage to make the new seats work (old seats barely worked with the cage I picked up dirt cheap).
I'm planning on attaching the seats to the cage, and the front of the cage to the frame (already have that done from the old cage) - the other parts, I haven't decided yet.
Michael 09-11-2003, 09:50 PM What kind of seats are those? I want new ones when I do a cage as well.
X~FACTOR 09-11-2003, 10:10 PM Sweet! Looks very comfy and the side support looks awesome.
GaSouthern1 09-11-2003, 10:38 PM Those look sweet...wish my ass could fit in them.:D
tdavis 09-11-2003, 11:29 PM They are ebay specials - just get on Ebay, and start browsing.
I decided to get ones that:
a) appeared to fit
b) not too gaudy (ie, you can't see the logo on these)
c) no california sales tax (so that eliminated several right there)
d) shipping cost was reasonable.
RockRanger 09-15-2003, 10:00 PM well the weekends over lets see what you got done :D more specificaly what you built with the bender.
Matt
I've got this harness on my driver seat right now. Uses the stock seat with a carbon fiber top bracket; attaches to existing seatbelt and child safety anchors:

The bracket attaches through the headrest rods.
Black Magic 09-15-2003, 10:07 PM Those Look great!
NOTAJP 09-15-2003, 10:08 PM Nice Alec! Working on that 12k post?
hehehe.
Sorry Tom, back to our regularly scheduled thread.......
BTW, I'll take some new pics soon.

Spent too much time making a portable bender stand.. That's right, I can bend tube anywhere. :D
I also figured out the old cage comes out, and I need to make a new cage. Got the tube, just need to get everything out of the zuk.

Is a child anchor designed to hold the weight of an adult too?
tdavis 09-20-2003, 08:59 PM Before I can do the cage, I need to first fix this:
http://www.explorerforum.com/tdavis/zuk/tunnel-orig.jpg
It now looks like this:

Hopefully, I'll be able to start bending tube next weekend.
bates 09-21-2003, 01:04 AM very nice seat! i wish i had them, then again i wish i had anything, being a student sucks ass.....but i really wish i had those!
AlaskanJack 09-21-2003, 03:37 AM Am I seeing things or do you have a twin stick t-case?? I swear I see 3 shifters

You do see three shifters. I'm thinking dual T-cases. Sweet!
BTW nice work Alec 12000 posts!
tdavis 09-21-2003, 10:11 PM Yes, my zuk has dual transfer cases - stock toy front (2.28) and a 4.7:1 toy rear.
With the axle gears and the cases in low-low and first gear, I have a 225:1 crawl ratio (that's 225 engine revolutions to 1 turn of the rear tires).
Yup, it sucks to be me. :D
NOTAJP 09-21-2003, 10:22 PM Holy crap! You could get out and have lunch before the Zuk got to the top of the hill! That's sweet. I'd just like to have a crawl ratio around 100:1. Maybe I'll win the lottery and get an Atlas II.
AlaskanJack 09-22-2003, 12:18 AM     225:1!!!!!!!!!
couldn't you walk up a hill faster than that???

Yes, you can. The zuk will idle in gear, and I've walked alongside it, just adding input to the steering wheel.
It's all about applying torque to traction.. By going so slow, I have the ability to apply massive amounts of torque to the traction I have.
I also never worry about a burnt clutch, or bouncing off stuff.
AlaskanJack 09-22-2003, 06:17 PM That is just too unbelievable! I can see some instances where you may need to get on the pedal to get over something and avoid a slow offcamber situation.
Well I guess if you have such low gearing you can get over just about anything and not need to goose the pedal. WOW!

Sorry Tom, but the idea of an engine producing 76ft-lbs somehow converting that to "massive amounts" just makes me laugh!! All props to your rig!! 225:1 is just friggin nuts!
tdavis 10-10-2003, 09:59 PM Ok, so I'm slloooooooooowww..
http://www.explorerforum.com/tdavis/zuk/cage-10-10-2003.jpg
Just the hoops, and some spacers done.
I hope to finish the upper half on saturday, and start on the seat mounts.
Looks like you have a good start though :D
tdavis 10-10-2003, 10:14 PM Yea, that front hoop is a royal PITA.
It's got to turn down AND in.
It took 4 tries to get it right. Try #2 is the rear hoop now. :D
tdavis 10-14-2003, 12:53 AM Didn't get much done on it over the weekend, too busy doing other crap..
But I did get this done in a couple of hours tonight
http://www.explorerforum.com/tdavis/zuk/cage-passenger-1.jpg
and
http://www.explorerforum.com/tdavis/zuk/cage-passenger-2.jpg
tdavis 10-26-2003, 07:49 PM Still more work to do (two more spreaders for the front half of the cage, two more spreaders for the rear half, another spreader for seat belt mounts, tabs are on order for seat belt mounts.
But it's getting there:

Lookin' good Tom:thumbsup:
JDraper 10-29-2003, 04:09 PM Looks good Tom! I gotta do that to my Zuk one of these days.......
tdavis 11-02-2003, 12:24 AM John, a cage in a zuk is very important thing to have. :D
There are several good vendors for cages - no, not me. rockrat's and dave sport cages look pretty good, and they are reasonable.
So I got even more done today:
http://www.explorerforum.com/tdavis/zuk/tube-drivers.jpg
http://www.explorerforum.com/tdavis/zuk/tube-passenger.jpg
Also removed the old shock hoops, pulled the steering box and started the prep for moving the front axle forward using my Alcan YJ's with 2.5" offset.
RangerX 11-02-2003, 01:47 AM Nice sheetmetal trim!!! Are you putting the lights back on, or is it no longer street legal?
tdavis 11-02-2003, 02:28 AM I have new dune buggy style headlights to install. (one of those "detail" things..)
tdavis 12-01-2003, 03:19 PM Well, got it running:
http://www.explorerforum.com/tdavis/zuk/thaven-flex.jpg
Tried to play "Get the Orange Pumpkin" stuck game with it, and almost won. (got a 2nd place prize - rear driver's tail light) :D
AlaskanJack 12-01-2003, 04:16 PM Sweet looking. And coming in 2nd to the Orange pumpkin is no Boobey prize.
Damn that winch looks huge on that thing. It's probably more powerful than the engine :D
Brian1 12-01-2003, 06:32 PM Looks great Tom! I love that tubed out front. Makes it look 10 times better!
JDraper 12-01-2003, 08:11 PM Looks good Tom! Now my Zuk has a "big brother" to look up to! :D
tdavis 12-01-2003, 09:28 PM Thanks guys! It's been a long 18 months to get it to this point, where I can now just hit trails and not worry about tearing tires/fenders and other crap.

I'm beginning to wonder if this is where I'm gonna have to go too, for the same reasons. On 31's, I had no body/tire interference issues. Now that I'm on 32's with more offset, my tires occasionally hit the body. Next time I go wheeling, I'm probably gonna mark the spots as I hit 'em and try to figure out how to improve the fit. Bump stops and Dr. Sawzall come to mind :). I wanna keep it road legal, so I can't go quite as far as you did....
Tom, are you running teraflex shackles (or something similar), and if yes, did they add any lift?? That may also be a way for me to get better clearance.

I am running a shackle reversal kit on the front, and YJ springs on all four corners. The front YJ's are from Alcan; they are 5 leaf, military wrap, center pin offset 2.5". The rear are combo YJ's, built up from a 4 leaf and 5 leaf pack for 6 leafs.
It is also SPOA, 1985 toy front axle, ARB, 5.29 gears, allpro spacers, and a 1987 IFS rear, high pinion electric locker, 5.29 gears.
JDraper 12-02-2003, 12:02 PM Mine's currently SPOA, on stock springs and axles, with Rocky Road spacers, a 4.16:1 Xfer case regear and rear Powertrax. I've been looking at doing the YJ spring conversion, but just haven't gotten there yet.
jasonb 05-08-2004, 10:16 PM tom.. refer to this pic..
tdavis 05-08-2004, 11:14 PM Jason, that area is almost un-repairable. It's about the one part you want to see no damage (rust or dents) in.
Took this picture tonight of the zuk, almost ready for Moab2004, The Wedding.. I'm in the process of moving the two radios (2m and CB) up into the cage, and adding a dome light (found one for a jeep, that attaches to the cage..)
Tom M. 05-12-2004, 11:22 AM Tom,
That thing is awesome, you did a great job. I really like the new front end and cage.
