I have done a few steering racks but none on Ford Explorers. So I am not sure what to say.

I've swapped mine before.. and it was a pain in the ass! Hope this helps! :p

It's actually not horrible once you get it all torn down. The hardest part is getting the actual rack out of that cross member dealio.

yeah looks like ya gotta kinda pull it towards the passenger side and then maybe go out thru the middle... looks kinda tricky

Once ya figure it out, it will go togather much quicker.Just did it three weeks ago, on a 95 Sport. And yes it can be a pain! Jack the truck up and put on stands, being careful not to cover the holes in the bottom of the cross member that go to the rack;) . Take the front tires off. Pull off the sway bar, disconnect the tierods. Now pull off the powersteering cooler, carefull, it drains! Now is hard part #1.... disconnest the incomeing tube from the power steering pump and the return line to the pump, at the rack.(Will be the driverside). Now disconect the link at the top of the rack that connects the steering shaft, it's just one bolt. Do not turn the steering wheel after this!!! Now pull off the two bolts at the bottom of the rack (They are like 24mm if I remember right). Now the real fun part.....while tilting the rack a little foreward side it towards the passenger side, kinda work it over as far as you can, pull the drivers side tie rod through the center section, and work the rack out. It takes some playing and working front to back to get it far enough towards the passenger side to get it out. But just rember, they didn't make the truck arround the rack;) , it's what got me through it. :D
