View Full Version : Are there any cons to the BFG All Terrain KO's
evoq007 09-16-2003, 05:44 PM Hey i want some people opinion on these tires...and what there disadvantages are. and im also wondering if they come with a warrentee or not. oh well everyone please chime in and post ur experiences :)
-Scott
The only thing I didn't like about them is that they were a little loud at slow speeds, but not really much more than most knobby tires.
Check out www.bfgoodrichtires.com for any warranty info.
Oh BTW, they only wore about 10-15% in the 18000 miles I had them; including many offroad and drag strip runs.
evoq007 09-16-2003, 06:04 PM they wear that well???...if so im sold... gettin 4 with mounting 30x9.50x15 for $550 on sale at sears
scott
Pretty good price.
Most people get at least 50000 miles out of them, if not much more.
Nate1 09-16-2003, 06:07 PM Wow! That is a really good price!!! It cost me $600 to get my Bridgestone Dueler's on my exploder... the BFs were like $800
SteveVB 09-16-2003, 06:46 PM BFGs are notorious on the east coast for the sidewall problems. I used to think it was just the old style ATs and MTs but the reports from the new models seem to be similar. If you are going to wheel hard make sure you take a spare. The good ride and good traction come from the flexible sidewalls - they will wrap themselves around and be exposed to all manner of rocks sticks etc. Pretty common to slit the sidewall so take a spare if you wheel- tire kits wont do you any good on the sidewall ( a tube and some leather are the only trail fix I know for a split sidewall).
If you are on road snow, or moderate trails they will be OK.
I've used tire patch kits on small sidewall holes, but on on BFGs.
I had many more problems with the sidewalls of my Goodyears than BFGs. That is to say my BFGs gave me no problems at all, and I wheeled on very sharp granite, gravel, limestone, foliage, etc. They didn't even show very many stretch marks from all the acceleration abuse I threw at them.
94WhiteEB 09-16-2003, 07:45 PM Make sure you check the prices at Sam's Club first! I think I calculated how much I saved had I bought them at Sear's and it was like well over $250.
Hokie 09-16-2003, 07:51 PM Only problem I can see is the Bridgeston Dueler AT REVO being a superior tire ;) (I'm slightly biased in the sense that I don't think BFG is really worth the price they try to charge)
NOTAJP 09-16-2003, 08:07 PM The only down side to AT/KOs are they will gum up in serious mud. Duh! But anywhere else and they are a superior tire. I've never had a problem with any sidewall of any BFG (used to be a dealer). Our club runs about 60% Goodyear, 30% BFG, and 10% swampers. Not one problem with a BFG and several have slit sidewalls on the Goodyears.
bipolarbob 09-16-2003, 09:12 PM The only thing I didn't like about them is that they were a little loud at slow speeds, but not really much more than most knobby tires.
that's a bad thing?
sapogmxr 09-16-2003, 10:52 PM mine arent loud at all. I love them in the rain, snow, dry, and mud. They have never let me down.
bipolarbob 09-16-2003, 11:31 PM mine are not what I would call loud, but you can hear them sometimes, and to some that is too loud.I think it is cool when you can hear them!
terdrocket 09-17-2003, 06:18 AM Why are you going to get 30 x 9.50s?
I am only asking because you'll wish you got the 31 x10.50s as soon as you drive away.;)
Mbrooks420 09-17-2003, 06:35 AM The only complaint I have about the ATKO's is that they hydoplane more than any other AT tire I have ever had.
SplashMan 09-17-2003, 07:15 AM Hmmm, BFGs... overpriced, bad on wet pavement, bad in snow and gum up faster in the mud than any A/T tires I've ever seen. Get the Revo if you want the best A/T tire on the market right now. There are four guys here at work who switched over from the BFG A/T to the Revo and you couldn't give then a set of BFGs now.
JDraper 09-17-2003, 08:00 AM I would disagree with the comments about them being bad on snow and wet pavement. They have never left me stuck in the snow, and I've never had a problem with hydroplaning. I've got about 30k on my A/T ko's and the only area that they haven't shone in is deep mud, but then again, it's not designed for mud. It has a closed tread pattern.
I'd buy them again without reservation.

I totally agree, I never lost traction with my BFGs when I wasn't expecting it. Of course with 300 hp I could make them lose traction whenever I wanted to though :D But I felt much safer with them than with my stock Goodyears, which involved me in a few wet weather accidents.

To each his own... But I totally agree with Splash but alas, I'm part of the Revo revolution ;)
sunbum 09-17-2003, 10:30 AM I love my BFG's, moreso the 31s than the 275s as they just cut through conditions a lot better. The 275s disappointed me in the traction department, even in rain, but I'm quite satisfied with the 31s, esp in last years heavy winter.
I'm glad I gave BFG a 2nd chance. I think I got mine for ~115/ea at JackWilliams Tire Co. I paid $125ish in Maine for the 275s when I got them.
Shop around... hell, Sam's wouldn't even stick them on saying they'll rub/against manuf. recc's... pulleeeasse.
That was the other reason I looked elsewhere.
Do it... I doubt you'll be sorry. As for noise, sure, they're louder than your standard radial but I don't think my teeth or ears are sore after a drive... there are much louder out there.
captainkev 09-17-2003, 11:08 AM sunbum, or anyone else.
I take it from this thread that no-one here is considering the Goodyear AT/S.
I was plannining on putting the 265/75/16 or 255/70/16 in the AT/S on my 03 EXT next week, but now I am wondering what the deal is with the KO.
Have any of you had experience with both, and have an opinion between the two of them?
Thanks, Kevin
Between the Goodyear ATS and the BFG AT, BFG all the way. They get better traction, last longer, and have stronger sidewalls.
bipolarbob 09-17-2003, 11:47 AM I never had a problem with my BFG's hydroplaning either, but they are not the greatest in snow.I have had worse.
dmasini 09-17-2003, 12:14 PM I got my BFG 31's at Sam's for $540.00. Definitly check their...
sunbum 09-17-2003, 12:22 PM I had GoodYears on there originally... can't recall if they were ATS but they had some fun tread action going, but I felt they could've been better...
I just wanted something more since I like to 4x4, and checked the site to see what people were running at the time and gave the BFGs a look.
I have been quite happy with the look and performance of the BFG AT KO 31s.
izackary 09-17-2003, 07:07 PM I want to hear what opinions are between the BFG KO vs. the Bridgestone Revo. So far I'm sold on the revo's...
SplashMan 09-17-2003, 07:14 PM Lets see if this works... this is Tirerack.com...
BFG vs Revo (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare2.jsp?compare=true&partNumber=&make=&model=&clarifier=&price=&width=31X&ratio=10.5&diameter=15&sortCode=&speedRating=&qty=&stockMessage=&type=T&URL=&newCompare=true&prevprice=&loadRating=&promoShortText=&promoUrl=&sidewall=&sidewallShown=&frontTire=&frontLeftTire=&rearTire=&rearLeftTire=&wantRHP=&RHPprice=&goWhere=%252Ftires%252FCompare1.jsp&AddToUser=true&manufacturer=BFGoodrich&manufacturer=Bridgestone&startIndex=0&sortValue=1&qty_105R5DMZ2_=4&qty_105R5LONGTTA_=4&qty_105TR5LONGTTAOWL_=4&qty_105SR5HL683OWL_=4&qty_105SR5HT689OWL_=4&compareList=5&qty_105QR5ATAKORWL_=4&compareList=6&qty_105SR5ATREVOWL_=4&qty_105SR5AT693OWL_=4&qty_105SR5AT693OWLNY_=4&qty_105QR5MTAKMRWL_=4)
izackary 09-17-2003, 07:18 PM nope, no such luck. hey do you have an instant messenger? i'd like to discuss these tires sometime. i don't dip 5 bills into anything i don't research thoroughly (especially when i have the time since i'm only up to 2 or 3 bills:p)
SplashMan 09-17-2003, 07:22 PM You can go to www.tirerack.com and do a side by side comparison there... just do a search and then select the BFG and Revo. Great site for that.

Yes, my Revo's only have a 2 ply side wall.. who cares... I don't do enough rock crawling for it to matter.. besides the BFG's are heavier (bad MPG's) and ride rougher and aren't as good in wet pavement. When buying a 31" tire, I would worry more about on road saftey than which is better in Moab. My Revos actually have a more open tread design than the AT KO's and they clean better in mud (tested that last weekend when the jeep was running AT KO's).
No, I don't do extreme rock crawling.. I'm in college and this is my ONLY vehicle. I can't afford to break stuff but I do love getting out in the woods.
Also, the Revo's have a great warranty and a 30 day Money back guarantee/test drive period
My BFG dealer told me that BFG doesn't warranty their tires... they just sell them on their name... Frag that
People love BFG's.. great... But their are other tires out there for less money that offer as good or better performance in every category.
Tell ya what though.. buy whatever will make you happy b/c you have to drive it :D
*step down from soap box*
2001ExpSport 09-17-2003, 09:11 PM I think the main issue would be size here. The revos largest size is 31" where as the KO goes up to 35".
For me, I want a 33" and Revo.s are not available in that size, but the KO is.
There are many tires out there. Try the Mickey Thompson MTX. It has an aggressive tread while still being road friendly.

izackary 09-18-2003, 06:56 PM I'm guessing BFG doesn't warrant them because they're abused so often. I didn't realize what kind of weight difference there could be, though. any idea what the specific weights are?
SteveVB 09-19-2003, 05:50 PM I run the Goodyear AT/S on my Navajo. Before I bought the AT/S I had run numerous sets of BFG AT and MTs on various other vehicles - but none of them have been the redesigned BFG's. So I made my choice with some experience. The BFG's were on 3/4 or 1 ton trucks and I didnt replace them with BFGs - they got Goodyear workhorses, or Dunlop AT's.
The AT/s on my Navajo work great in snow and excellent on ice, good in the dirt, rocks, not so good in mud, super in the rain-predictable with much less hydro-planing than I experienced with the stock AT's(even with a wider cross section) . Not as quiet as a street tire. I was happy with them, never had any problems. 40k miles from them. I am suspect about the sidewalls on them, they are flexible, but the tread heads up the sidewall a bit which keeps the sidewalls from bulging down low close to the contact patch. Airing down doesnt do as much on the GY AT/s as compared to the BFGs - you take the air out of the BFGs and the sidewalls really bulge- great for traction, but I believe this is why they get damaged sidewalls. But I never had a problem, was on a trip where the BFG shod TJ in front of me sliced his AT. Only one in the group to loose a tire. For a mostly road driven vehicle that sees an occasional trail the At/s are good tires. Ill purchase them again no doubt.
My experiences with BFGs arent so good - The tires on my work trucks were problematic- a couple of cut sidewalls, bubbles, and balance problems. They were good in dry dirt, ok in snow( the trucks pushed snow) and sucked in mud (AT's) For an all terrain tire they were louder than I thought they should be. The work trucks got Dunlop ATs which have been great in the snow, and run quiet and seem to be tough as a tire can get. Plus they were fairly inexpensive.
The BFGs still seem to be popular- I thought they had a great warranty, one of the reasons people buy them, and also a factor in the cost. Ive read many reports of the tires being damaged and BFG replacing them. Maybe something has changed?
BFG is a second tier brand for Michelin, and for onroad/light offroad the Michelin LTX may be a better riding choice than the AT. No experience with them, but havent heard much bad about them.
FWIW, I would (and did) pick the Goodyear AT/s over the BFG AT.
izackary 09-22-2003, 09:05 AM Glad YOU like 'em...I've had nothing but problems with Badyear, though. 40k mile-old tires (195-75/14 S-rated) off a pontiac grand am i had YEARS ago were only 4 years old at the time, but had rotted out sidewalls and I was forced to replace them all a week after i had the car. When I had my camaro, it had badly wearing eagle-somethings. I hadn't even beat on them (enough) but they hydroplaned just enough to total my car on the interstate. NO MORE "GOOD"YEARS FOR ME!
Explo01 09-22-2003, 02:06 PM I got my BFG ATs (31x10.5) for $440.
evoq007 09-22-2003, 05:40 PM how did you get the BFG's for soo cheap!!! i wanna know!
Scott
Explo01 09-22-2003, 06:01 PM I got then at a local shop. But I really wish I had a lift kit to fit more rubber tho. There's a big difference when comparing a 31x10.5 to a 32x11.5. Now I can't imagine a comparison to a 33x12.5! My 31s would look puny next to those things.
Holty 10-10-2003, 02:17 PM I can either get the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's mounted, balanced, tax included for $498 (from Firestone shop)
OR
I can get the BFG A/T KO's mounted, balanced, tax included for $460 (from Sam's club)
Both are 235/75-15's
MY QUESTION IS: Which of these is better in snow? and are those good prices?
Hokie 10-10-2003, 03:35 PM I replied in your other thread. I believe those are good prices. I paid $630 for my 265/75R16 Revo's with no road hazard or anything like that.
Mbrooks420 10-10-2003, 04:57 PM The BFG's are good in the snow. I was very impressed by then. I have no experience with the Revo's.
