How about this Guys:

I take the Wife's 98 5.0 AWD X to Home Depot this weekend for some stuffs. Haven't been in the truck for weeks. Feels a little weird, bucking/jerking in Overdrive. I get home and question her: "Yeah, I meant to tell you about that. I noticed it a while ago"...

So, when going up hills and/or when under load we get this bucking/jerking action. This only happens when in overdrive.

I can hit the O/D off switch and punch it up a steep hill w/no problem at all. Never saw the O/D light flash. We had the tranny fluid changed, no metal filings found ...same issue.

Not sure if related: We had a Check Engine a month ago that came and went on it's own, code pulled said something about the canister [this is according to the Mechanic]

Always Ford serviced. Engine purrs like a kitten at idle and roars like a tiger when you get on it. Truck drops no fluid.

Is there a separate computer for the tranny that tranny shops pull codes from?

What do you think? Should I leave the Wife?

When is the last time the Expl. saw a tune up? Plugs, wires, air & FUEL filter, etc could all effect the performance of the vehicle.

For instance, my cobra had a bucking/stumbling problem in any gear at any speed as long as the RPM's were between 1,000 and 2,000. Changed my plug wires and the problem went away. My datalogger said the #3 cylinder was the culprit. However, it had the original wires that came on it from the factory back in 1996. They needed to be changed.

When the cobra would get above 2,000 rpms, it would run really hard. This made me overlook the simple possiblity of plug wires. I figured a miss would show up at all RPMs. Between 1,000 and 2,000 the car doesn't have much "Get up and go" anyways, which means the engine has a pretty decent load to overcome until it reaches peak performance.

Had the Explorer in just about a year ago. The bill was around $350-400 ...Plugs, filters [incl fuel], tranny fluid, fuel injection service, some other stuff that helped take care of a rough idle. Truck is going to AAMCO tomorrow AM. I'll know by noon if it's going to be a couple hundred or thousand.

I reviewed other threads ...the AAMCO guy was impressed, TPS, solenids, sending units, IAC, etc. This is a great place to learn a little or at least pick up on terms. Fingers crossed.

For what it's worth I'll repeat myself: About 3 weeks ago the Check Engine came on for about 4 days and then went away on it's own. My 'buddy' Mechanic took a code related to "The Canister" He cleaned the line feeding it and sent me on my way.

Took a call from AAMCO this afternoon. It is NOT a transmission problem. They think it's a mis-fire or damaged cylinder of sorts. $190 [no labor] for spark plug wires??!?! Holy Sheit!

Off to my local ford dealer I go.
