Here is what I know (this is a friends explorer) -

99 Sport, 4.0....of course

Anyhow, he went out to start it up today, and it will crank but will not fire unless he gives it gas...then it will idle crappy and die as soon as he lets off the gas.

That's about all I know, I believe the car has between 60-70000 miles on it.

I'm thinking the idle control on the intake...this sounds familiar to what happened on my 94 Taurus SHO.

So I figure IAC, or dirty MAF....what are your opinions? I figured I'd ask people who KNOW Explorers :)

Thanks for any help!

Did they have the recall done on the manifold gaskets? that could be the problem.

do a search on OOM12. you should find some good info.

Are you getting a "check engine" light? Try plugging in a code reader to get the code. You can have a shop read the codes for about $75 or buy a reader unit at Kragen for about $100. Came in really handy for figuring out my O2 sensor problems.

did you get a chance to clean or replace the iac and maf? did it fix the problem for you?

IAC, IAC, IAC, IAC.

Same symptoms on my '99 sport, It would die if I didnt give it some gas, and only start when giving it gas.
Cleaning it is a waste, spend $80 and get a new one.

My IAC was making really loud humming sounds, and the idle speed would flare up at startup. I got an Echelin (sp?) brand IAC at Kragen for $50 - took care of the problems!
