View Full Version : Engine Pinging

When accelerating from 2000 rpms to 3000 rpms I get this rattling noise, once I get off the throttle it goes away. Sometimes it goes like there is a thumping noise coming from the engine when it is also makeing the rattleing noise. I have cleaned the MAS, IAC and the throttle body. I haven't changed the spark plugs yet, on the coil pack the first two plugs have white corrosion on them the rest are fine. The engine sometimes idles rough and the whole truck shakes bad, and i sounds like the exhaust it going to fall off. Is it missing? Sometimes it lacks power. Should I replace the spark plugs and wire first or, should I run sea foam through the engine? And hope it fixes the pinging.

If the whole truck is shaking badly when you're driving (20+ mph) then u should probably u-joints replaced, or atleast have them looked at. As far as the rattling, im not too sure. I've got a rattling problem too but i havent been hearing it as much lately. I added a quart of oil since i was low and im running some fuel system/combustion chamber cleaner through the tank right now and the rattling has cut down a bit. I only hear the noise when the truck is in motion, so it could could be pinging cuz the engine is under a load or maybe its the transfer case...:\

Sounds like the heat sheild on your exhaust is making the rattling noise. It also sounds like your lower intake manifold bolts could use retorqed.

Nope not the hear shield I cut the peice off that was rattling. The noise when I accelerate is almost like little peices of metal are flying around inside the engine. The shaking is when it is in park. Not when I am driving.

How is your gas mileage?

jar2187
11-02-2003, 06:02 PM
Sucks,I get about 143 miles to a full tank

Are getting any gas smells coming out the exhaust?

Well after driver, When I shut it off and get out and walk down the drivers side and walk around the back, (drivers side back corner) I smell gas.

Sounds like your fuel pressure regulator is shot.Check the vacume line on it for gas,its on the passenger's side fuel rail:D

When I was tighting the lower intake manifold I accidently pulled the hose for it off and couldn't get the little boot thing, finially got it but , the boot wasnt wet inside, the hose barely fits inside the boot, it can pull out easly. One hose that it wet though is the vacum line that goes to cruse control, Inside of that hose is damp.

Do you know where its at?One line is vacume and the other line is for the fuel and there is two 10mm bolts holding it down, its a little bit bigger than a golf ball:D

jar2187
11-02-2003, 06:21 PM
Yea that is what i knocked the vacum line off of. Its on the pass. side towards the front of the engine, kind of covered by a hose.

Thats it:D If there is gas in that line then it is bad,and will create very bad gas mileage, and could damage your O2 sensor aslo:(

Nope no gas in the line.

White corrosion on the plugs is probally your intake gasket leaking.it still sounds like the FPR to me:(

jar2187
11-02-2003, 06:29 PM
Its not the plugs it in the coil pack and on the wires that plug into the coil pack.

jar2187
11-02-2003, 06:29 PM
How much in the FPR

Oh I didnt know that:D

FPR is about 57 at autozone.I have had 4 first gen explorers and I have had to change FPR in all of them:(

What could cause the first to shockets on the coil pack to corrode like that

Bad wires:(

Do I need to replace the coil pack along with plugs and wires

what plugs and wires should I get, and how much do u think they are going to cost?

I always use motorcraft plugs, and exact fit wires you can get the plugs and wires at autozone for under 30 bucks.

update, I replaced the plugs and wires finally, Still pinging. I then bought SeaFoam and ran that through. Didn't smoke. Still pings!!! I have also cleaned TB, and MAS.

That means you're either getting unmetered air into the system, and you're not getting enough fuel (lean).
Have you ever reset the computer?
Another possibility is that your trucks computer has gone haywire and needs to be replaced. This is uncommon but has solved pinging on some.

Did you ever replace the FPR? Earlier in the thread it sounded like the FPR was bad.

How about the O2 sensor (you might have 2 on your truck but I'd guess 1)?

Havent replaced the FPR, hate to replace it if its fine. Yes I have reset the computer, when I cleaned the MAS and IAC. Havent replaced the O2s yet.

Unmetered air could be getting into the system somehow. Have you re-torqued the upper and lower intake manifold bolts? Check for good seal around all intake areas from air filter to throttle body.

yes I have but, the upper intake looks as though it is too far to the drivers side, I can see a hole a little bit of a cavity on the passengers side, maybe its the inside of the lower intake?

If you think you can see where unmetered air is going in, you can test to see if it is..

Get a propane torch.. and turn it on (turn on the gas, DON'T LIGHT IT)... and aim it where you think the unmetered air is going in.. If the idle goes up, then yes, you are leaking from around there.. if not, your chasing the wrong thing..

on a side note.. I started to pick up ping again a few weeks ago.. I had already retorqued the intake bolts, and was going to check my work when I decided to use seafoam.

I'm not sure how much good the seafoam did.. BUT when I got the smoke from it I noticed I not only had smoke out the exhaust (like I should), but I had it under the engine compartment..

I checked around and I found it was leaking from the exhaust manifold... I replaced the manifold gaskett (I put 2 gaskets there (with "right stuff" rtv type stuff between them) and now my pinging is gone..

Remember, an exhaust leak can cause it to run lean too and can cause pinging..

Thats an idea. How would I tell if the exhaust manifold is leaking. By the way you know the sound of an engine from a pos car thats falling apart, when someone guns its. Well thats what my truck sounds like just driving at 2,000 rpms, it pings louder now, but some days its not as loud. And lacks power. It sounds like the engine is falling apart.

I made my exhaust smoke.. and I saw smoke coming out of the manifold.. that worked for me... To make it smoke, I used seafoam, which will clean away carbon deposits... I just put a hose from the vacuum t into the canand let it lift it up.. (put it in, take it out, put it in, take it out so I didn't flood the motor)... I got some smoke while it was doing that.. but after I let it sit like you are supposed to, and then restarted it.. I had lots of smoke.. mostly from the exhaust pipe.. but I had a bunch from the leaking exhaust manifold.. (took me 10 minutes to change it out... It may take you longer as I don't have inner fenderwells, so I can just rear over the tire to touch the exhaust manifold)

Also, check for stupid little things too...

for exaple...

is a spark plug loose (been there, done that)..
Is a spark plug fouled (usually the #5 will be, which also usually means the lower intake is leakign)...

good luck...

when i was changing the plugs, plug 5 had whitish black ash on it. Is this fouled
