For pretty cheap, I have a chance to buy an automatic transmission, transfer case, and converter from an AWD 5.0 '00 Explorer. I'd like to have it as a spare for my '96 AWD 5.0 Explorer. Anybody out there know if the '00 will work in my '96?

If you're going to use it as a spare I say go for it.

As far as the transfer case. You'll have a problem there because the speedo sensor is on your '96 tcase, but there isn't even a port for one on the '00 because it was moved to the rear axle. So, you'll have to swap the rear housing off your 96 with the port if it ever happens to go out. You'll want and need the speedo hooked up too. I went for about 8 months with no speedo and it sucks cause the tranny actually uses the speed to upshift and downshift.
