’97 Ford Explorer-4R55E Transmission Will not shift without severe hesitation & balks at reverse when overdrive light is on. When light is out, performance is as it should be. When “OD” light is on you can stop and restart the engine and
transmission will shift properly. I suspect a bad solinoid or perhaps the torque converter locking up. I don’t do a great lot of transmission work, but this for a young family member with kids – broke…
All input gratefully accepted. Thanks !

First check your fluid. It could be a sign of a torque convertor going up. Try disconnecting the battery to reset the computer.

Suspect your problem is the valve body gasket blowing out. Happens when the bolts get a little loose. My 97 bolts were loose but got it in time. Bought a spare '99 with a gasket problem for parts. They aso have a bracket that holds in the solenoids that cracks and an EPC solenoid problem. I think the first step should be dropping the pan and at least tighten the valve body bolts. Do a general inspection for this cracked bracket and any metal in pan. If nothing unusual, I suspect a gasket problem. You could do this, just don't tip the valve body over. Stuff falls out.
