Ummmm I talked to them and it comes with the bumper which suicks because I already have that bumper.
They are thinking about making a retro fit kit, posssibly welding required.

Now I dont know about the Ex because I believe this carrier retains the lower hinge thats already on the BII???

I forgot to ask them though...

I got so sick of having hte big ass tire back there boucing around and blocking my vision I ditched the back seat and put it there....much better :)

they said they used the exsiting bumper ( the one you have not factory) and added this on. I use to have just the bumper on my ranger. It rocked and tough as hell. (Super Duty couldn't hurt it:D ) I rember it was shaped like a "L" for the mounts. The Ex mount holes I think are diffrtent but it would be nothing to drill holes in the frame. Width should be the same?

yeah width is about the same. ON the Ex the only thing, the rear bumper wraps around the corenr a little bit, so you would be missing that.

I love my Duff bumpers, I think they were a hell of a deal, but I got one of the first sets and they have more than doubled in proce since then, it was 90 for the rear and 110 for the front + shipping, unfished.
I use my rear to tow a 4500# boat with grade 8 bolts, never had a single problem.
I got hit from behind by a galant, he just wnet about 3' under the bii, took some paint off the underside of the duff. hahaha other then that they are awesome quality, strength, and fit.

I just think the 3#" spare is too big for the back of the BII, 35 would be worse, so I'll keep mine a 2 seater.......now what to do with the stock carrier and hinges???

:)

They are strong as hell. I bought both front and rear for my ranger for 400 with shipping. I had a guy dart in front of me and stop. I broad sided him at about 35mph comming to a stop. I broke a turning signal, thats it. Totaled his truck. The whole nose was pushed over. And they weren't even mad:rolleyes: They just wanted to know where the hell I got the bumper from:D

Nature of the beast, just like a Jeep or any other smaller rig, a 33+ tire just doesnt fit back there without taking up the space in front of the window...

You dont want it on the roof because of the poor clearance and higher center of gravity, so what do you do with it?

I took out the back seat (sorry passengers) and strapped it down back there. Perfect.

Now what to do with the stock carrier? shovel, hi lift, and gas can??

when you have a sec. can you mesure your rear bumper and tell me the frame width. O.D. Frame or I.D. Bumper mounts. This will tell me if it would fit me ex. thanks! :D

SUre....I will do when I get home tonight.

Shouldnt take too much work to make it fit an Ex but I do believe the rear of the Ex is slightly diff than the BII...

I will check though

The BII and Ranger frames are narrower then the Explorer by a long shot. Sorry, hate to break the bad news because I'm looking fwd to the James Duff rear bumper to match my front JD as well.

I'm looking at some tubular bumpers for the X. I found that Smittybilt makes a winch mount one for the front, but can't find anything for the rear. I would like to stay with one brand. How hard is it to mount a winch on the James Duff front bumper?

which JD bumper? the normal prerunner or the one designed for a winch?
I modified my JD bumper after i got my winch

How much modification did you have to do to get your JD to fit. Was it designed for BII's or Rangers?

It was designed for the Explorer. Check towards the bottom of the page and you'll see the pre-runner winch bumper with Explorer's listed. I just drilled the mounting plates where I wanted the bumper placed and bolted it on.

JGAMBLE, you've got mail.

I know this is an old thread, but wouldn't it be possible to cut the mounts off the BII rear bumper and move em out and modify em to work on the X? I like that rear bumper/tire carrier, I think a torch and welder could make it work.

Personally, I couldn't justify that kind of money for a bumper/carrier just to have to cut and weld on it again. I'd rather build my own for that price. In fact, I will as soon as I get a chance to order the tube bender. I would also measure the width of the BII, it might look silly on the Explorer because I think the body is wider but don't quote me.

Torch + welder makes everything work.

Why on earth would you spend $720 to $860 (powder coated) plus shipping:eek: for a bumper with carrier that you would have to cut and reweld the mounts to?

This is exactly why I just sold my James Duff winch pre-runner front bumper. It was either chop it up until I was satisified or sell it and build my own. Hopefully the bender will be here shortly. My business should be getting started soon as well.

notajp, you talking about the bumper I'm buying off ya? I still think it looks good personally. Once you start fabbing up your own and make a rear one for the X, let me know and I'll buy one of those too :D I was just thinking if I could find a used one on ebay, I really don't mind torching and welding, in fact, kind of enjoy it. :)

Oh no! The front bumper is made for the Explorer. I just wanted my winch placed in a different location and with my fenders it just didn't fit exactly what I wanted.
I was refering to the rear bumper. James Duff doesn't make a rear bumper for the Explorer. The BII and Explorer rear frames are totally different. This would require a lot of fabrication to make the brackets fit the Explorer frame. Since that bumper is already an unGodly $800, I just couldn't find any justification to start chopping it up.

I know James Duff has said they won't make the modular tire carrier/gas fan for the X, but I wonder what they'd say if we bombarded them with requests, can't hurt.

I just got off the phone with Mike (I think was his name) at James Duff. I was told several very interesting and exciting things while on the phone.

First thing was they are in the product design and testing phase for.... You guessed it a Spare tire / Gerry Can Rear hitch bumper for the Explorers. Second thing was they are looking into R&D for a SAS kit for the Ranger/BroncoII/Explorer line of trucks.

Not sure when the bumper will be finished but sounds like within a month or two. For the SAS kit it is just an idea at this time but they are actually considering making it.

I'll be all over that rear bumper. A SAS kit.... I'll do that too... if they keep the price reasonable and I have the money... no doubt :D

thats funny they already have what it takes to solid axle a TTB Ranger family truck, sans the trac bar mount...

Hey 410,

You are right about the trackbar mount, but he said they are talking about making a new upper coil bucket/shock tower also. Those two things and the heim jointed early bronco radius arms shortened a bit would pretty much complete a SAS kit.

Remember the SAS kit is only an idea they are playing with at this time. Though if you pester them a little and show them a market for those items it could become a reality.

JGAMBLE

alrighty, might be a dumb question.... but what axle would this kit use? I don't think the D35 TTB is all that bad a setup. However a good solid axle would ROCK

Dana 30 or dana 44, 30 keeps the same bolt circle and when built has few disadvatages compared to a stock D44, plus additional ground clearance.

Of course a built D44 has the D30 beat.....

I am pretty sure their EB radius arms and coil bucket can be bolted up (maybe not directly, drilling) to the Dana 35ttb frame.....

I know this is sort of off the rear bumper subject, but do you think that with a little modification a front bumper for a 1st gen Explorer would fit on a 2nd gen Explorer. I figure the width would be about the same but i dont know for sure. Thanks for the help

Felix
01-26-2005, 12:23 AM
if they offer a 98+ ranger bumper that should fit your second gen explorer better than a first gen explorer bumper. I am not 100% sure on this but remember hearing something about it on either this site or the ranger station . com.

I remember seeing a pic of the front ranger mounts for 98-up. They look to be the same as a second gen ex. I think it was on rangerpowersports.com, they were putting a bumper either on an edge or xlt and the pics of the mounts looked the same as a second gen ex.

ok thanks for the help. i guess as long as the width is about the same then I dont mind fooling with it to make it fit.
