one day i locked my keys in my car. i had a friend stick a piece of wire down throught the window and got in unlocked. now it wont lock, sometimes it does, like once every ten times i try it. do i need to take the panel off the door to straigten something out?

Yup.
Sounds like he twisted the linkage.
It is a bit involved to fix.
Just pop the panel off and grab two pair of pliers.
Sit on a milk crate or a stool and put the key in the door twist it and watch what it is wanting to do.
most often it is just a matter of shortening or lengething the linkage.
