I'm looking to get a good jack and stands to work on my X. What sort of capacity jack and stands do I need to get? I have a '98 Explorer Sport, don't know how much the thing weighs. I've seen a lot of 2 ton jacks for sales with stands, would that be enough? Or do I need to go for a 3 ton?
A stocker is around 4000 +/- 300 empty, so a 2 ton is ok for a stocker.
However, once you start lifting and putting on larger tires, you need to worry more about lift height than capacity; as one that's high enough will be strong enough.

I say at least 2.5 ton. Usually the higher the weight capacity the higher it lifts also. You can get jacks at pretty much any automotive store, but go for one that's at least $100. Sears has real good jacks if you want to put out the money.

Get the highest rating jack and stands you can afford. I'd get a 3 ton jack and probably 3.5 ton or larger jackstands.

Don't get jackstands less than 6 tons. Not for the weight, but because they have a wider base. I want height when I use jackstands and you need a wide base to make it stable..

Thanks for the help, I'm going to look for a nice 3 ton jack with some 3 ton stands most likely. I can't spend too much, but I'd like to get the best that I can afford.

Yeah, get the 6 ton. They are very stable and can lift higher than the smaller ones. Here are some for $33.

I would go with atleast a nice 3 ton set.
3 ton set (http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00950134000) on sale for $60
sears is having all kinds of sales. There was also a $45 3 ton professional that came with free professional stands
