View Full Version : XMOD rc cars
What are your opinions on these?
I think there pretty cool, fairly fast out of the box, good amount of parts for upgrades. With a few mods these things can go 30-35MPH.
I realize that might not be that fast compared to other more exspensive stuff out there, but for the money you cant beat them IMO.
I have the R34 with the AWD and light upgrade. Great car, though it eats batteries. I'll probably upgrade the motor at some point.
The only thing (as with all electric motors) as you have a tradeoff between low torque and high speed. I can't decide what motor and gearing I want to put in it.
99explorer5.0 12-31-2003, 12:03 AM 30-35mph from four AA batteries? are you serious? I used to own a Nitro Tmaxx and that thing would go around 30-35mph which is pretty damn fast. I cant see one of these doing the same speed. I bought some microsizers and those were fun ... interchangable gears and engines ... i might get one of these just to try them out.
mhn3773 12-31-2003, 12:21 AM it runs on AA batteries?..can someone post a link to these things id like to have a look at them =)
at least it used to be...

I didnt say right out of the box. ;) I said 30-35mph with certain mods of course. Out of the box these things do 15mph.
A good mod is the 5/6 cell mod, which ups it to 5 or 6 batterys.
I dont actually own one yet, but have heard great things about the XMOD. Ive seen some highly modded XMODS that can literly burn rubber!!!
Im about to head over to RS and pick one up. My first mod will be the 10 stage motor upgrade. It's called the excallibur 10 stage. Another company has a 10 stage motor coming out soon, well there out but in limited supply. Ebay has a few motors for the XMOD that would make them very fast!
Ive heard there are people who have XMODS that do 75mph, and that's coming from a reliable source.
snocross1985 12-31-2003, 07:16 AM I got the nissan skyline along with the satge 2 motors. These things are pretty fun and i wanted to buy more parts, but radio shack's shelves were empty as of last week. I'll probably have to go back this week to check out if they got new stuff in.
Just a heads up for the guys who would like to upgrade their XMODS. Follow the link Alec posted above and look for the message boards. They have tips and tricks and how to's with pics on how to do the 5 and 6 cell mods. Looks easy and it only cost a few bucks.
Saleen85 01-03-2004, 12:15 PM These things are pretty fun. If anyone is interested in the 6-cell mod, make sure you have AWD. RWD alone can't handle it, it strips the axle cups out. :(
The Waco crew :)
my Skyline, my RSX, BJ's Skyline, Jeff's Altezza
Two car's not shown:
blue/black Civic - Robert's
white Supra - Christopher
Yeah my Alteeza is a Mini Z, looks like it's time for mods to keep you clowns off my tail! ;)
The 6 cell mods give me (a box stock Mini Z) a hard time, other wise the Mini Z owns joo!
I'll just run over you with my R/C Explorer Sport I have! :p

snocross1985 01-03-2004, 02:03 PM Here's a pic of my yellow Skyline and my bro's red Supra. Both nicely done up with spinbrush motors and soon to have 5 cells. No 5 cells though until I can get my hands on an AWD... Mine cranks now as it is, if I put more cells on without AWD it will be outta control :D

Saleen85 01-03-2004, 02:09 PM What did you use to get the pinion off the motor? I am wanting to do a spinbrush upgrade on mine. I definately need AWD. Probably going to stop in at RadioShack and see if they got any in.
Rob
snocross1985 01-03-2004, 02:19 PM To get the pinion off you would need to order or buy a micro pinion puller. I wanted to increase the teeth on my pinion gear, so I bought a 13 tooth gear, it goes FAST! Anyways the micro pinion pullers are available online just do a search they're only like $10 plus $5 shipping. You also may ba able to pick one up at a hobby shop that deals with slot cars. Whatever you do, make sure you get the MICRO pinion puller and not the regular as it will be too big. For a ton of mod info on these cars go over to http://www.xmodworld.com I am a member on that forum with the same screen name I have here.
Saleen85 01-03-2004, 03:15 PM Yea, I'm not a member of the board, but I've been browsing around. It's where I got the idea for my 6-cell mod. I still had to heat up the body slightly, but it's not THAT noticeable. Thinking about adding one more cell in the back area, 8.4v using the NiCD rechargables. From what I've been reading, that's the max that the ESC can take. After that, you have to do some serious modding. I don't know if it's worth the added weight, tho.
I guess first of all, I need to get AWD, and THEN I can start the more power thing :)
I got my Skyline a few days ago along with the AWD kit, stage 2 motor kit, body kit, tire and wheel kit. Could not find the Stearing or suspension kit. Which are very hard to find. The metal bearings are also very hard to find!
First day I played around with the car with the stock motor and then on second day I decided to do the 5th cell upgrade. All I can say is WOW! 20% more power baby. I still useing the stock motor BTW, Im gonna put one of the stage 2 motors in soon.
 I wanted to do the 6th cell useing the battery that came with the XMOD charger kit. 1.7V 700mAh battery.(Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery Not sure how good these batt are, but i'll continue to use them unless I find better battery.
Have any of you done the 6th cell mod with the Skyline? I placed the double AAA battery holder in the cars shell and it wouldnt fit!! :( So I just opted with the 5th cell. Any tips with doing the 6th cell with the Skyline.
BTW, im a member of the XMOD board as well.
Saleen85 01-03-2004, 11:31 PM Well, there are two ways. You can put one in the top, and one in the back bumper area. Or you can heat the body of the car up, and press-fit the both of them into the car body with the chassis. You will end up with something like this one ... Look at the skyline with the carbon fiber hood.
I did this with my RSX, and I only had to press into the back window slightly. I trimmed some inner plastic's down tho.
Saleen85 01-03-2004, 11:32 PM I tried to join the xmod board, but it never sent me a confirmation email. *shrug*

Saleen, it takes a few min. Give it time. ;)
Thanks for that info on the 6 cell btw, Id love to get it to work in a RSX. Last night I helped my brother do the 5th cell in his RSX with the stage 2 drift motor and the thing has lots of zip now. Im not so sure a 6 cell in the RSX is a good thing. :D
*EDIT* Last week I was put on the list of people inline for the 10 stage motors. Im told they will be read soon. I cant wait to see what this motor can do.:p
Saleen85 01-04-2004, 12:18 AM I joined this morning. Still haven't gotten the confirmation email :D
Yea, the 6-cell mod on the RSX is hairy. I rolled into the throttle for about 100ft, then nailed it, and it swapped ends. Definately don't do the upgrade if you don't have AWD :) I'll take some pics of what I trimmed out, and the small area that I "enlarged" by heating on the back window. It doesn't look bad, you can barely notice it.
Saleen85 01-04-2004, 12:19 AM Oh yea, I forgot to mention this is a pocket sized money pit. I'm thinking about a SB hybrid motor, upgraded FET's, and an external turbo ... :(
Rob
Saleen85 01-04-2004, 12:22 AM Yea, I just checked it again, and it says "email address already registered" ... *shrug* I guess it got lost in the mail ..
bwaaahahahaha

;) and you for one know this! :p
Saleen85 01-04-2004, 09:35 AM yea, bite me ...
hahaha :D
Money pit indeed!
I really want a RSX to go along with my Skyline, but they are so damn exspensive. :(
30$ for the kit would be more like it IMO.
Saleen85 01-04-2004, 10:48 AM hahaha I hear that.
I got the RSX to mod, and break, and the Skyline to .. well .. not really rice out, but I want to setup the lights on it, make it more of a show car.
snowburns 01-05-2004, 06:38 PM these look sweet, whats it cost to get into them?
Saleen85 01-05-2004, 06:41 PM $50 for the car at Radio Shack (or if you want to be like Jeff (SVO) and get the mini-z, those are about $125), and then you can purchase the mods for them. Motor upgrades, body kits, suspension, steering, stuff like that. There are also things you can do that you have to seriously mod for. Taking the motor out of a Crest Spinbrush, and adapting it to work in these cars, battery expansion, repainting.
snowburns 01-05-2004, 06:43 PM whats so special about the mini-z? and can you get the mods and stuff at radio shack too?
Saleen85 01-05-2004, 06:45 PM Originally posted by snowburns

The mini-z is made by Kyoshi, it's more "tunable" from what I've read. Box stock, it's faster than the xmod, but you can get your xmod to tear up the mini-z with a few mods, and still spend less than what you would on the mini-z.
Yes, all xmod cars and parts can only be purchased at Radio Shack, exclusively. Good luck finding stuff on the shelves tho. You might try ordering parts, if you can't find a RS that is able to stock parts.

snowburns 01-05-2004, 06:51 PM i may have to look into this....hope my girlfriend doens't mind me having another car to share her time with :D
People say the mini-Z are faster out of the box. I dont understand how that can be, being they use the same motor and are the same size and roughly the same weight! (1/28scale)
Ive seen the Mini-Z in action and I dont see them being faster stock! Im not even that sure the quality is that much better to justify the cost being twice as much as the XMOD.
Ive done much research before buying my XMOD, there's a reason why I chose XMOD over Mini-Z. ;)
Saleen85 01-05-2004, 06:53 PM Now, the Xmods only have 4 body choices, and 6 cars. Yellow Skyline, White Supra, Red Supra, Silver RSX, Blue Civic, and I think a Silver or White Civic.
The Mini-z's have off-road vehicles. They have a ton of vehicles to choose from.
Another big difference, the mini-z is RWD only, and the xmod can be upgraded to AWD.

Jeff (SVO) has the Mini-Z Altezza. It is ligher than my xmod RSX. They have a different chassis structure, and don't utilize as much plastic in it. Box stock, his was about faster than my RSX with the bearing, and stage 2 road race motor upgrade.

So very true! They are the hottest thing going right now, I have about 8-9 RS within 30min North and South of me. None of them can keep these things in stock, same with the upgrades. It's very tough to find the lights, stearing, suspension, and ball bearing upgrades. The kit's are selling like hotcakes, get them while there hot! :D

Don't forget the AWD upgrade. I always forget about it, because I've only seen one .. and it was installed on someone's car :(

I got mine. :p
Saleen85 01-05-2004, 07:00 PM dammit ... I may just have to order one. 6-cell + RWD = broken dogshaft cups on the axle
snowburns 01-05-2004, 07:04 PM are all 6 cars the same performance-wise, and just different looks or what?
The only place you can get them right now is EBAY, and expect to pay atleast double the price. Ive called Radioshack and they are even out of stock, same goes with their online store. The woman I spoke with told me to wait two weeks and all stores should be back to normal stock. They blame X-mas. I dont however, they are still selling like crazy.
Good luck finding what you want or need.
Im looking to get either a RSX or CIVIC to go along with my Skyline, my brother bought the last CIVIC in South Jersey today. :(

Pretty much yeah. The lightest of the cars are the RSX, so it will be a little faster. The skyline or Supra are the heavyest of the 4.
Saleen85 01-05-2004, 07:09 PM yup. Supposedly the RSX is lighter, because the body is shorter, but I don't think it's but a coupla gram's, if that. It utilizes a shorter driveshaft, and has the shortest wheelbase.
There is a lot you can do to 'em. Ppl are making Carbon Fiber driveshafts, CF front and rear cover plates, brass gears with more teeth (13 and 15 vs 11 now) for the SB and SB-Hybrid motors, someone is working on aluminum axle assemblies to get rid of the plastic stuff that's on it now. There is a surprising amount of stuff being done to these 1/28th scale cars. I'm going to work out a new body for mine. I've got plenty of 1:25th scale models, I think I can retro fit a body onto one of these cars :)
Rob
snowburns 01-05-2004, 07:10 PM this is funny, cause i was dropping a friend off at the airport last night and some kid had one of those real little rc cars like that fit in your palm and are 15 bucks...me and my friends started talking about driving this kind of thing around in the airport..lol
i think i gotta get into this...
snowburns 01-07-2004, 02:08 PM Well...I got mine at radioshack, they didn't have many though...they must be a popular item to sell like that.

Yeah, these RC cars are selling like crazy.
Scormunch 02-01-2004, 07:28 PM Hmm I may be headed to my RS tomorrow... the Xmod's look awesome, its funny I've never even heard of them before :p
snowburns 02-02-2004, 12:57 AM Good luck at getting your hands on one....soooo hard to find. I want the light kit but they're back ordered, even RS's website doesn't have them... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... guess I gotta look towards ebay
Scormunch 02-02-2004, 11:23 AM Well I went in this morning and they had EVERYTHING :D Now I have to make a trip to the bank and head back to the store. They had a few supras in various colors, a couple of civics, 2 skylines and an RSX, light upgrades... you name it. Looks to be a fun afternoon :p
Scormunch 02-02-2004, 02:57 PM <==== is a proud new owner of a red AWD st.2 Supra... now I just have to put it together and wait for the batteries to charge :p
Critical_Level2 02-18-2004, 03:22 PM I saw a whole bunch of them at a radio shack by my house. I may have to get one because my sister has a wrx mini-z and won't race my tmaxx (probably because I ran the mini-z over with it). Can you paint over the colors they come in or do you have to stay with the color the come in?
The body comes off easily and you could paint it. However, the paint would probably double the weight of the body ;)
Saleen85 02-26-2004, 07:05 PM I went by a RS last week, and they had the AWD and bearing upgrade, waited until the next day, and it was all sold out. Wanted to wait until I was closer to going home, before I bought more stuff. It sucks being 1200 miles from home :(

Mike_H 03-13-2004, 11:22 PM Alright just reading this thread you guys make me want one, but I have a quick question. Are the throttle and steering proportional like a true r/c or is it Nikko style where it is all or nothing? What kind of run times are you guys getting out of it?
Mike_H 03-14-2004, 10:44 AM OK I found out that it does have a Digital proportional steering but what about the throttle? Is it proportional or just on and off?
jimbo74 05-09-2004, 11:58 PM i want to get one of these for play at work during lunchtime..... my sister has a 1999 black civic and i want to get the 2000 black civic xmod... that way it will look like her car... the ? i have is: can you do the 5-6 cell mod to the civic? and also.. what about the toothbrush motor? and stage 10 motor? huh?
Mike_H 05-10-2004, 06:30 PM Hey Jim if you get a Mini-Z you can race it at the track when hobby town opens there new store soon. They closed the Hobby Town in San Carlos and the owner is combinding the stores.

jimbo74 05-14-2004, 09:55 PM Hey Jim if you get a Mini-Z you can race it at the track when hobby town opens there new store soon. They closed the Hobby Town in San Carlos and the owner is combinding the stores.
there is a hobby town across the street from my work.... hmmmmm
i got the x mod today... civic black coupe..... pretty fun out of the box.... but needs mods... i played with it full throttle for about 10-15 minutes, and it still moves... i even rolled it a couple of times... road rash ;)
jimbo74 05-14-2004, 11:37 PM i just ordered mods...... www.xmodworld.com
stage 11 motor with the 6 cell upgrade included and the awd kit :) hell yeah! spent more on the mods than i did on the kit... going to be wicked though..... no other mods planned..... $57 shipped for both the above
jimbo74 05-15-2004, 12:16 AM forgot the bearings! doh! can get that local :)
eventually going to do the lights and blue civic body kit....
anyone know where i can get a right side mirror for a black civic? i somehow lost mine! it might be in the bathroom at work (i put my car together in there on the clock ;))
snocross1985 05-15-2004, 07:55 PM I don't have my mirrors on my skyline anymore. I have flipped mine so many times thay broke off. I like to drive very agressive :smoke:
jimbo74 05-15-2004, 10:59 PM i dont need a mirror anymore, i found it at work in the bathroom, i guess when i was unwrapping the little plastic parts bag, that it got stuck to the tape on one of the bags.....
Mike_H 05-17-2004, 08:59 PM i dont need a mirror anymore, i found it at work in the bathroom
lol
there is a hobby town across the street from my work.... hmmmmm
You work off newark blvd? anyway the new store is might be by the fremont hub. I am sure when they open it and set up the track they would let you run a X-Mod on it. As far as racing goes they only hold mini-z classes.
general x 05-17-2004, 10:41 PM check out the HPI cars at http://www.hpiracing.com/index2.htm their pritty cool
BBQ_HotDogs 05-29-2004, 01:28 PM Are yall still having a hard time finding the upgrade kits to these? After reading all of these posts on the XMODS I went to radio shack last night. They had at least 1 of everything except for the white supra. I almost bought me one and had the 4 wheel drive upgrade and the suspension upgrades in my hand. Backed out at the last minute. Where do yall race these at? I saw 2 tracks that Radio Shack sells on line for them, but wondered if you raced them indoors or outdoors or both. Is it worth buying one and then going straight to the power stage 2 engine upgrade or should another route be taken with the engine? They certainly look pretty cool, but wondered if this was just a fad running through at Christmas time or is it gonna stick?
Mike_H 05-31-2004, 03:16 PM I don’t think that the XMOD is really a r/c car that you can properly race. IMO what keeps it from being a hobby quality r/c is the lack of proportional throttle control. I think it is worth spending the $60 extra bucks for a Mini-Z. If you just want something to put around with, and have fun tricking it out then the XMOD is for you. If you want a mini r/c that you can race at many local hobby shops then the Mini-Z is what you want. There is a seller on E-Bay from time to time that sells Mini-Z clones in his e-bay store. He sells them for like $29 and charges another $20 for shipping. I am thinking about getting one of these, they are compatible with all genuine Kyosho Mini-Z MR-01 parts and hop ups!!! If anyone wants more info I am sure I can find it again on e-bay.
jimbo74 10-21-2004, 01:18 AM wow this threads been dead a long time... just got my xmod running again :) it has a 6 cell mod, nimh 850 mah batteries, AWD, alloy center axles i guess, not the outer ones where the wheels connect, rear spool(welded spider gears) and a stage 11 motor (180 size) alloy lugnuts, shock upgrade, & probably some other stuff i forgot to mention
here are the pics: http://www.explorerforum.com/data/showgallery.php?cat=3368
jimbo74 10-21-2004, 01:37 AM forgot to add something: they are now available in 3 new body styles! old mustang, old camaro and new vette
Chew_12 10-21-2004, 02:12 AM Sweet man I just added this to my christmas list, i have never heard of them before but now i want one!
jimbo74 10-21-2004, 02:29 AM might want to look into the miniz cars there is a monster truck one, and they are fully customizeable as well, although a little mroe expensive than the xmod.... if i had to do it over again, i would get hte miniz monster truck though....
Bobby Locs 10-21-2004, 09:38 AM forgot to add something: they are now available in 3 new body styles! old mustang, old camaro and new vette
Their is also a NSX and A 200? Mustang. :D
Mike_H 10-21-2004, 08:58 PM Hey Jim here are some pics of my Monster I keep talking about. It needs a new front shock stay, too much smokin and drinkin going on at a friends house and it hit a motorcycles front tire

BBQ_HotDogs 10-25-2004, 01:41 PM I have quite a few of the XMODS still new in the box if anyone is interested in getting some. I will also add new bearings and some custom painted wheels.
Bobby Locs 10-25-2004, 01:45 PM BBQ let me know which ones you have, I'd be interesed in some that I dont have. My plan is to have one of each.
BBQ_HotDogs 10-25-2004, 03:40 PM I have at least 2 of each of all the cars except for the very latest ones, the camaro, vette or mustangs. I don't have those. I am also keeping 1 of each. I also have some fabbed up bodies to fit these cars, like a porsche, farrari, auditt, and many others. We were doing a project of these and had a good time, till the hackers took over our account. So we quit and went idle till we cleared everything up. Just let me know which ones you want, I should have at least 1 to sell. I also have 3 cars that have some serious motors in them. They are really dragsters and run on 6 and 7 cells. Plus a ton of extra parts.
Not Enough American Cars In This Thread!! :D
2001ExpSport 10-25-2004, 07:43 PM Anyone here into REAL r/c cars? :mattmoon:
Anyone here into REAL r/c cars? :mattmoon:
Ahhhhhhhh, EF is once again blessed with your trolling. There is a complete forum here for Models and RC cars. There are plenty of threads about "REAL" RC cars. What is a "REAL" RC car? 1:12, 1:10, 1:8, heck maybe 1:4 is what makes a RC real. Either way, this thread is about the Xmod cars (as clearly stated in the title), if you have nothing to add to the discussion, don't post here.
Anywho....
This is what I like about these cars. I did some TAB work at a middle school a few months back, and after school, an Xmod "club" congregated in the cafeteria for some racing. The great part was that everyone ran, essentially, the same car. The only modification that had been made to every car was the addition of bearings. The shop teacher at the school had tracked down the size of the bearings, and sourced them out at about $.50 a piece, as opposed to the $2+ that RS wants. Outside of the bearings, each of these cars were "stock" out of the box (although I believe the motor rpm and gear ratios vary amongst the cars). The only performance advantage the racers could achieve was through weight reduction and susp setup. Many of the kids had to de-tune their cars to make them equal to the others.
IMO, this was great racing! And to be honest, I put in about an hour of company time watching them. :) I would love to get involved in a similar club, but racing mini RCs isn't all that popular amongst the +/-30 crowd. Oh well, it is still fun to run up and down the road. I used to race a local 1:10 carpet oval (way back when BoLink owned) and that was great, but nice tracks like that doesn't exist around here anymore. Heck, a cleaned out living room could be enough room to oval these things. And the $$$ involved is a huge bonus!!
2001ExpSport 10-26-2004, 07:04 PM Ahhhhhhhh, EF is once again blessed with your trolling.
Yes, but not all of us have been blessed with a sense of humor. Do you need a kleenex? ;)

If you don't mind me asking, how much would you be asking for a car?
BBQ_HotDogs 11-24-2004, 08:58 PM To my friends here at the Explorer Forums, I ask for $50 a car. It will come with a new XMOD, new steel bearings, and will also throw in a set of custom wheels and lug nuts.
Do you have any upgrades to sell BBQ? I wouldn't mind some bearings and motors.
BBQ_HotDogs 11-24-2004, 09:03 PM I have everything and then some. Will sell a set of new steel bearings for 10 bucks. Lots of custom wheels too.

Xmods Chele 04-18-2008, 04:28 PM We race on a special type of carpet and in our group there are about 7 or 8 xmods(all modified) and 5 or 6 miniz(also modified). 8 out of 10 times first and second place are xmods. I think that min z are may be lighter and quicker but xmods are better for side by side racing. Most of the time I can flip over a mini z without much effort.
No disrespect to mini z, but with the price advantage xmods have I do not see why people prefer to purchase a car that costs 3 times what an already modified xmod cost.
here are some pics of our cars.
