Does somebody know if a Explorer with a diesel engine was ever built by Ford, maybe for the European market ?

No, there was never a diesel Explorer, to the best of my knowledge. But I can tell you that Ford and Navistar have signed a deal which states Navistar will build a V-6 diesel for the Explorer/Mountaineer, Expedition/Navigator, and the Econoline vans. This should happen sometime in 2000/2001. It's still in the design stages at this point. Navistar makes Ford's Superduty "Power Stroke" engine. They also use it in their medium duty truck line under the name "T444E" The industy's first fully electronic medium duty diesel engine! I work for Navistar, as if you couldn't tell.

Well, I can't really say what Ford did over seas, but I would doubt it was a stock diesel engine. So, beware!

well, apparently bosch has decided to work with ford according to one of my buddies to build a diesel engine for the x and it should be coming out soon! yeah. diesel gets better mpgs, the gas is cheaper and the engine of a diesel can run FOREVER. thats why trucks use them on their long mile trips. the excursion diesel is like 4k more but is definetely worth it with the mpg increase!

it depends on what you're using it for. i have talked to a retired couple with a V-10 excursion. they travel on long trips towing their trailer, and they say it has excellent highway mileage for pulling such a heavy load.

Diesels have that loud annoying sound that downs out any cool engine sounds, but its also good on mileage and longevity. That's cool that its so cheap, but some places dont have diesel gas (that might suck sometimes...)

i would find the diesel explorer funny if it was ever made. it would have the deepest growl for a smalll vehicle. i would just find it funny.

I swear, if the engine in my X ever has a major problem that the engine is not worth saving, I am going to put a diesel in it. My dad works for CAT so I have somewhat of a hookup for an engine and parts.

If anyone has done this, please let us know!

Bump!
We were talking about putting a diesel in an X today and I kinda like the idea. I tried a search and this came up but I can't get the pics. Heath could you please send me the pics at dbarale@earthlink.net if they're still available?
Also if anyone knows one or heard about one, what engine did they put in?
Really interesting idea....

I don't have them up on photopoint anymore... I'll try and find them after work and send them to you... I don't have any underhood shots, the pics were taken doing about 75 down the freeway...
