Hi everyone, Im new to this forum, hope and look forward to talking and responding to some of your guys/gals questions to..

With clutch out, transmission makes noise, clutch in, noise goes away, 92 xl 5spd 4.0ltr. Ok Im now also having troubles getting into 3rd gear. Im 95% sure the throw out bearing needs replaced, correct me if im wrong, but for the 3rd gear thing, do you think this is caused by the throw out bearing. Do you think both throw out bearing and transmission are going out.

What do you guys think, 2nd and 4th gear do it about 10-15% of the shifts and works fine the the other 85-90% of the time. Its giving me some problems!!!!! Help

If my transmission is going out, any good suppliers with a good price?

It's possible it's your throw out bearing but i know when mine went in my truck it made it hard to get into 1st gear. what kind of noises is the truck making with the clutch in? does the transmission make noise otherwise or is that it? I'd try bleeding the slave cylinder and seeing if that solves the problem even temporarily. if it does it's a safe bet it's the slave cylinder.

I agree with doug the throw out bearing could be the culprit, but if it's hard to get into gear sometimes the slave cylinder might be on it's way out also. Similar thing happend to mine, the slave went out big time...couldn't even start it since the clutch wouldn't disengage. Anyway if your going to replace the throwout bearing and slave cylinder you might as well replace everything, including the pressure plate and disk. As far as suppliers...NAPA is where we get all our stuff...much better than auto zone or advance, decent prices too. Good luck

If you decide to get a new clutch look in the luk pro gold series, they make the stock clutches for ford and the pro gold series is a step up, i got a kit for ~260 and it came with the pressure plate, clutch disk, throw out and pilot bearings and slave cylinder. www.dialaclutch.com

My throw out bearing went out about a year ago but mine was making awful noises when my clutch was in. I thought that the throw out bearing was only being used when the clutch was in?

When the clutch is out, thats where the noise is, at a stop, if I just press the clutch in 1 or 2 times the noise will go away.

There is a slight noise constant at all times. at idle, I can hear the transmission over the engine.

Where is the slave cylinder?

Most likely, manual trans does not need replaced?

Thanx guys

do you hear a whining while driving? if you have to pump the clutch to get it to stop making noise it definantly sounds like the slave cylinder is leaking this is fairly common on 5spd explorers. it wouldnt be such a big deal expect the slave cylinder is internal and you have to drop the transmission to replace it. if you going to do all that might as well replace everything.

I hate to keep this going, but I know i have to replace clutch, throw out, slave, the whole nine yards.....

What about the trans, what do you guys think, do you think my clutch, throw out, slave cylinder not getting good contact or not working properly and causing tranny to be harder to shift, or is this up for grabs, take your chances and not replacing transmission...Are the manual transmissions likely to go out around 100k miles? thanx

with proper maintenance and assuming it's never been run low on fluid it can go for over 100k. it's really hard for us to tell you what the exact problem is, if you're unsure on what the problem is take it to a shop and see if they can diagnose it more thoroughly. Or if i was you and assuming you have the money for a new transmission i'd drop the transmission and replace the clutch. while i had the trans out i'd take the top cover off and see how it looks.

Unless a manual transmission is abused it should pretty much last the life of the vehicle.

Ive been asking around today, sounds like after a clutch is getting worn or the throw out bearing, sometimes it gets harder to get into gears. I think im gonna cross my fingers, and take a chance at clutch, throw out, slave cyl, and just do all that, see how she drives!! Thanx guys, I appreciate it.

Good luck with it, hopefully that's gonna be all you need. are you going to do it yourself or pay a shop to do it?

Probably gonna let the shop do it. couple of years ago, I would typically be gung ho to do work on cars, as of lately, I dont like working on cars, lol....doesnt look very hard tho, but Ill let a shop do it.
