Greetings to everyone. Just joined and was instructed to introduce myself - Retired Army Officer, 31 years service, nothing exciting to say about that. Restoring WW2 vehicles is my main hobby - currently working on a frame-up restoration of a WC-57 Dodge Command Car - When complete, will look like it just rolled off the assembly line except the paint job will be epoxy and clear coated with working M2HB Machine Gun (Semi-Auto) and armour plating like the one used by Georgie Patton.

I also just acquired a 1996 Ford Explorer V8 XLT Limited with 70K miles that has been garaged for 7 years to replace my old 1994 Explorer V6 XLT. The '96 is truly pristine - Have added a few improvements - K & N intake, improved exhaust headers and 3" pipes, Hotter spark, N2O injection and new guages, european lights in front, brush guards all around, push bar, hooks, PIAA Driving and Fog Lights, 3000K etc Going to put on black powder coated nerf bars, bigger (better) brakes and high performance calipers front and rear and finally going to 17" wheels if I can find some that fit the 1996 lug pattern, or 18's if they will fit - This is my toy car and so far, it has never passed a gas station it didn't like! 10-12 mpg in city, 15 if I'm lucky on the freeway - That's what I'm doing to entertain myself. I also like to shoot trap and skeet and I'm a Freemason - and no, we are NOT taking over the world (yet).:us:

Hey Folks. My '98 AWD is making a grinding noise along with a vibration when turning in any direction at low speeds. No hopping or clunking, and accelerates fine with no clunking slip in the t-case chain ( I'm pretty sure anyway). All 4 tires are matched Michelins. The kicker is that when it's cold the problem isn't bad but after driving a bit it gets pretty bad. Anyone know what the problem is? I just joined up with you guys and this is my first post. Thanks for the help!

When you are driving in 2wd with a control trac equipped explorer, how would you be able to tell that the 4wd has kicked in automatically? Do any of the lights come on in the dash when it kicks in? to my knowledge i have never experienced my 98 xlt shifting into 4wd on its own when i was stuck....

Needing a new battery... maybe alternator and cables, any suggestions?

Tonight I noticed my battery gauge was showing a drop in voltage while stopped at a red light. At the time I had the headlights on, heater about half...

Tonight I noticed my battery gauge was showing a drop in voltage while stopped at a red light. At the time I had the headlights on, heater about half way, and the radio on. I figure the battery needs replaced and planned on replacing the cables as well.

I decided to test it to see how far it would drop. I tuned the heater on high, radio up some more, and the rear defroster on. I noticed it dropped down to around 10 volts, just guessing. So I may be needing to replace my alternator as well. I would like to use a 220 volt alternator to handle any future demands in excess of factory equipment.

So here are my questions.

Should I test the output on my current alternator?
Should I test the battery?

What is a decent brand of battery to use? Money is currently not a problem so high-end batteries are in my price range. I also don't plan to just run to walmart and pickup whatever fits just to have to change it out in a year or two. Not to knock on walmart or it's products but I prefer to spend my money elsewhere.

What is a good brand for battery cables? I'm replacing both pos and neg completely. Again money is no option, the factory cables have lasted 15 years but I rather change them now before they do become a problem in the future.

I do plan to replace the battery and cables before replacing the alternator because I don't want to spend money on a new alternator is I don't need one.

If I need a alternator what is everyone's thoughts on used alternators or rebuilt ones? My father suggested a used one.

If you look at the list of to-do's for my Ex in my registry you'll see why I don't want to spend money on something that doesn't need replaced... yet...

Tomorrow I'll be replacing my shocks and passenger side RA bracket. So any testing that may need done can be done tomorrow, hopefully. Rain is expected Tuesday.

Thanks for the help guys :)

hi, i'm a dumbass and went busing though a big mud puddle at the Mounds in Mt. morris MI and almost hydrolocked my engine, it still runs but now my GT40(not P) has a bad knock of some kind.

what do you guys/gals suggest for replacement engine or rebuilding?

I want to get some more power out of it so i'm thinking of getting a mustang GT40P or rebuilding it with higher compretion pistons. i dont need boo-koo internal parts (IE forged), just somting that holds up well under alittle more abuse then stock. i'm also thinking about/planning on adding TMH, roler rockers, and an HD torque converter.

its My DD so if you know anything that can help me get it back on the road quicker that would be awsome, thanks!!!

I'd like to replace the struts for a softer ride, but I was wondering, are all the coil springs for my year XLT all the same spring rate?

Hi Guys,

I have an 03 ST XLT and I changed my tires from 255/70 to 265/75..I then changed my torsion keys to a keyway-08 and placed homemade rear shackle extensions I'm looking to find out what is the original front stock tire height from the ground to the fender?? I'm gonna take a guess and it may be 32 or 33 inches. Right now with the larger tires and new torsion keys I have it to 36 inches in the front...

Also like I said I changed my torsion keys....Does anyone know if there is any advantage in changing the keys compared to just doing a TT with the original keys?

In the rear the shackle extensions gave me an extre 3 inch lift wich now gives me 39" from fender to ground... however I now find that the truck shakes a bit during take off???
